How to pronounce the name of the Olympic city:QUOTE
In the shadow of Olympic venues, Brian Williams has anchored NBC’s “Nightly News” this week in a city he calls Bay-jing.
Yet Bob Costas, Meredith Vieira and many of NBC’s sports announcers seem to be working in a different, more exotic place: Bay-zhing.
So which is it?
Williams is right, if you talk to experts in the Chinese language. He’s even recorded something about the pronunciation puzzle for NBC’s Web site, although it doesn’t seem to be required viewing for everyone at the network.

"Pot-A-to, Pot-a-to, let's call the whole thing off". It just grinds me sometimes when people say "MosCOW", when the correct pronunciation is MosKO.

Perhaps, considering the last few years. they should rename Bijing, (bay-jing), to (bay-ching), the sound of a cash register. Ching Ching Ching goes the coins into their pockets. Sounds like a slot machine to me.

Today I visited with a friend who returned from Bejing just two weeks ago. He said the locals pronouned it Be-zhing not Be-jing. I don't claim to know anything official but according to him that seemed to be common usage.

Actually, it's "Mosk-va" in the nominative case.

Nominative case makes my brain hurt.
Then wait until you try the
genitive plural case ... that makes my head explode.

Can we just go back to calling it Peking?
