I thought maybe this was the best way to talk about our favorite teams this season rather than individual threads for each team.

I like this idea, though my guess is it won't stop people from starting individual threads on teams, or on games, or whatever.

There's a report from the NY Daily News that Michael Strahan would agree to come out of retirement if the Giants agree to pay him $8 million. If it's true he's certainly more straightforward than Favre. Strahan had his drama last year, but this year he retired and moved on to his new life as a TV talking head.

Well alot depends on how in shape Strahan is. Last year he skipped camp but was still working out. This year, if he really believed he was retired he probably isn't in football shape. Then again, he does have a LARGE alimony bill to pay...

As for the Giants, I hope he does return so we don't have to hear all of the crying from NYC about what could have been with the Giants after Dallas beats bad. Real bad.

If the Giants have a extra 8 million dollars lying around that there not spending, then getting Strahan back may not be a bad thing considering the alternatives. At age 36 he still had 9 sacks which is more than most get, but in the open market I doubt he would command such a sum.

I hope the Giants convince Strahan to come back. I totally understand his retirement; too many athletes hang on for too long rather than go out when they're on top. But the team needs him, and so he's certainly in the drivers seat as far as what he can command money-wise.

Aug 26 2008, 04:38 PM
If he hasn't been working out during the off-season, how long is it going to take for him to get into shape to play? Remember, he started slowly last year, after sitting out training camp, when he did work out during the off-season.
The
court ruling in his favor would seem to make money less of an issue, if it's an issue at all.

Redskins-Giants tonight...Giants started out very strong on offense and then just slacked off. Washington was just inept all night offensively. Their time management in the final minute of the first half (though, granted, they scored a TD) and late in the second half was dreadful -- it was Andy Reid-esque.
I kept waiting for the Giants to start dominating the game again and they never really did. I almost hate to repeat myself from previous years, but (sorry Munson Man) they just didn't impress me that much.

I went to my first Eagles opening day game ever, and boy I couldn't have been treated to a better performance. The score 38-3 over St Louis, wasn't even that close. The 3 points the Rams scored wasn't until most of the Eagles' starters were out of the game. Rookie DeSean Jackson lived up to some of the hype the local media was touting, and McNabb completed long passes to 4 different receivers. As pleased as I am though, I won't be drinking the kool-aid until the Eagles show me something against a strong team like Dallas.

As well as the Eagles played in just about every facet of the game -- passing, running pass defense, run defense, special teams -- the Rams are a very, very bad team. They made it easy for the Eagles to do whatever they wanted. A week from tonight at Dallas will come a more real test.
The one thing the Eagles didn't do was get any turnovers. Asante Samuel dropped two would-be interceptions by himself.
But it was fun to be there for my one game this year -- I've seen two home games the last two years and the Eagles have scored 94 points in those games.

Besides the fact that I went to a bar to watch the game tonight, which I rarely do, and it seems that when I do that the game ends in a loss, here's what frustrates me about the Eagles: so often they don't lose a game just because the other team was better. They lose a game they easily could've/should've won but do something utterly stupid -- like not having a punt returner on the roster in the opener last year, or the final play tonight, when it's 4th down and they need 17 yards and throw a 6-yard pass.

After watching the Eagles DeSean Jackson and the Cowboys Terrel Owens last night, I have one question. Is a single digit IQ a prerequisite for playing WR in the NFL? Jackson's brain-dead play speaks for itself. And ESPN's feature on Terrel Owens showed that his vocabulary consists of about three phrases: let's go baby, get your popcorn, I love me some me. IDIOTS!!!!

What a difference a week makes. After the Eagles and Cowboys put up close to 80 points in an offensive show, this week the Eagles defense against the Steelers looked like the steel curtain. The Eagles defense sacked Ben Rothlisberger 9 times, got a fumble, an interception and a safety. Meanwhile Philly's offense was limited as Westbrook left the game with an injury as well as McNabb for a short time. Hopefully Brian's ankle injury is minor for the Eagles' sake as well as for all those fantasy geeks out there.
Joe in Philly
Sep 21 2008, 07:25 PM
Where was the Eagles defense last week? They showed up today, manhandling the Steelers. They could be 3-0 with just a little defense last week. Unfortunately, we have to see how Westbrook's ankle is, because the offense was mostly stalled without him. His ankle is reportedly not broken but he'll get the MRI tomorrow.
Stupid decision by Mike Tomlin at the end. Down 9, 4th and 10 at the Eagles 22 with under a minute left and the clock running? Kick the field goal and try the onside kick -- it's a no-brainer. But Tomlin went for it and an incomplete pass later the game was over.

The Giants have suspended Plaxico Burress for two weeks because he failed to show up on Monday and didn't return phone calls. Now, the Giants have a bye this week so I don't know if this means this week counts and he will miss only one game or he will miss two game weeks.

Very subpar performance by the Eagles. As usual, the playcalling burns them. 2nd and goal at the 1 and they showed no imagination on three running plays that all were stopped. A coach that's pass-happy all the time runs it at the wrong time. And the 4th-down play especially -- it's 4th and inches from the end zone. Hello? QUARTERBACK SNEAK!

I am with you Joe with that lack of imagination. I think once Andy has something in his mind he won't change it. I was fully expecting a sneak by the 240lb QB or at least a fake to Buckhalter and a run in by McNabb. There were so many opportunities to win this game I lost count. Then we have Mr. Unreliable outside of 40 yards. He started missing them last year.

Well TO, in his postgame comments, seems to be resorting back to his old self. He said stuff like he wasn't getting the ball enough and seemed to be throwing Romo under the bus.
And Tank Johnson, yes the Tank Johnson who has been in trouble with the law because of DWA (Driving With Armory), is upset with Redskin Rock Cartwright who apparently dared to celebrate on the sacred star at midfield. I know Tank wasn't with the Pokes then but his dear teammate TO did the same exact thing when he was a Niner.
The Cowboys looked tighter than Jerry Jones' face.

Domenik Hixon is great. Scored the first touchdown against Seattle, and just brought ball to the first yard line. Giants now lead Seattle 24-3.

Wow, quite a performance by the Giants. They completely dominated Seattle on both offense and defense. The offense especially looked intimidating - they often moved the ball at will, and gained 523 yards of offense. Right now, they're clicking on all cylinders and look very complete.

Sounds like the Giants were very...impressive.
The Eagles were not. Disclaimer: I was playing softball and missed the game. I recorded it but I'm not going to bother watching it. However, I've heard enough about the game to declare them big fat FRAUDS -- especially their head coach.
It was so bad that:
1) on Comcast Sportsnet there is usually Eagles Post-Game Live right after the game. Today they're splitting time with Phillies Post-Game Live -- switching back and forth between the two.
2) on that show, Gov. Rendell reported that there were "Let's go Phillies" chants at the Linc
3) also on that show, Andy Reid is being ripped to shreds -- not just by the football panel, but also by Mitch Williams.

The Giants proved that they could play well without Plaxico Burress. Today's papers report that he said he needed to take his 21 month old son to school and that is why he was MIA for a team meeting and failed to contact team officials. As one reporter wrote he is "an erratic and irresponsible person."
Another worry for the Giants are concussions. Plax's replacement Domenik Hixon suffered one during Sunday's game, as did Kareem Mackenzie.
What a game, though! Eli was terrific!

The Giants have looked good so far coming off of a SB season. It seems like they don't even miss Plaxico. I like to see what they do against Dallas when the time comes.
The division is very competetive and unfortunately for me, the Eagles are at the bottom mainly because of Andy Reid and his lack of ability to adjust. After next week they get a bye and will need it if Westbrook is to have any chance of healing.

So, after two consecutive NFC victories against Dallas and Philly, the Redskins lay an egg at home against the St. Louis Rams. Should we call it a let down game? Meanwhile the Cowboys lost in OT to the Cardinals while the Eagles beat the 49ers. Bottom line, outside of the Giants, the NFC east has become tight again.
