Full Version: Who's the new #1?

With OU, LSU and Mizzou all falling yesterday who is really the true #1? Alabama had a bye and Texas beat the #1 team. Conventional logic would move Alabama up to #1 but Texas has a lot to argue about that choice.

Who do you think and why?

Alabama
@Clemson (#55), W, 34-10
Tulane (#126), W, 20-6
Western Kentucky (#117), W, 41-7
@Arkansas (#68), W, 49-14
@Georgia (#7), W, 41-30
Kentucky (#32), W, 17-14

Texas
Florida Atlantic (#121), W, 52-10
@UTEP (#92), W, 42-13
Rice (#76), W, 52-10
Arkansas (#68), W, 52-10
@Colorado (#56), W, 38-14
v. Oklahoma (#5), W, 45-35

Even with Clemson disappointing, Alabama's schedule has been tougher and three of their four hardest games have come on the road. I'd vote for them.

Under the current BCS system, there is no practical difference between the top two rankings. Teams in those two spots hold a joint #1. The real question is about who gets left out at #3.

One small correction. OU was #1 when Texas played them. Texas was #5. I guess this is now a mute question since AP has ranked Texas #1 carrying 39 votes against Alabama carrying 26. Texas is not a consensus #1 and that will require a few more games. We'll see what happens next weekend with Mizzou. Texas also has OSU and Texas Tech to play.

This year's SEC and Big 12 are great conferences and the conference play creates a canceling out effect.

I can't wait for the BCS to kick in so the debates can begin.

For now I'll take the #1 ranking. Hook 'em Horns!

I should have explained--those are the CURRENT ratings according to Sagarin, rather than when the game was played. e.g. Clemson was #9 in the polls when they played Alabama but have since proved themselves totally unworthy of a top-10 ranking.

Prior to last week, I would have given in to Bama, but they looked really beatable against Kentucky, so I give it to Texas...

Thanks for the clarify.

Alabama has overall played a tougher schedule, but other than Georgia (and come to think of it, who has Georgia actually beaten?), it hasn't been all that tough. They looked pretty vulnerable in several games. I'd go with Texas at this point, but if Alabama wins out, they'll certainly be in the National Championship game which is all that really matters.

It will really get interesting and the division will become more apparent over the next 3 weeks. Here's the reason. Texas is getting ready to play Mizzzou (#11), Oklahoma State (#8) and Tech (#7). Alabama has Ole Miss, Tennessee and Ark St, all unranked. If Texas weathers the three game set there will be no doubt Texas is #1.

One of the three down and two more to go. Texas soundly proved they are the #1 team in the nation after dominating Mizzou in DK Royal Stadium last night. Colt McCoy is also proving to be a sound candidate for the Heisman.

This is definitely the year of the Longhorn.

BCS is out and no surprise on the results. Texas still has to take this one game at a time. OSU is up next and then Tech. Coach Brown and Colt McCoy are proving to be true leaders in keeping the team focused and not letting this get in the player's heads.

While I relish having the Longhorns in the top spot it doesn't mean anything until after the Big 12 Championship.
