Yes, everybody who's freezing in the north and midwest, believe it or not, some of us (like me in South Florida) have softball practice this weekend. We may be a little crazy, but it beats freezing your 'nads off (been there, done that).
So I thought I'd find out if any of the Outsports crew will be in Orlando or Palm Springs for the tournaments the weekend of 14-15 January. My team will be in Orlando, which is always a pretty good tournament. Hope to see people there....

I'll be there too. Last year's night games were VERY, VERY cold, though it was nice during the day (so get knocked into the loser's bracket early if you don't like playing in the cold, I guess

)
Still trying to decide on whether to play Birmingham this season. For SOME reason that I haven't figured out, it monsoons every Easter weekend in this city. We all swear that we'll NEVER, EVER play this tournament again, but we always seem to go back.

I went to Tampa's tournament last year. It wasn't very warm, and most of Saturday afternoon's games were rained out. The law of averages says that this year it will be warm and sunny - I hope that holds true for your sake.

CHIathlete, so instead of softball in Florida you are going to San Diego over MLK weekend to play basketball, right?

Rob, basektball has always been my first love. I'm afraid however, my serious playing days are over, the knees are starting to go. :-(
Does San Diego have a 'senior' division? My team took 1st in Chicago this past season in our new Sr. div. I played in San Diego's first tourney (10,11 years ago?)

Hey, I qualified for the senior division a long time ago, I am just a glutton for punishment. Chicago's tournament is the only one that has ever had enough teams to have a senior division. I am tempted every year to move up to "senior status" due to the wear and tear (ouch, never say "tear" when talking about basketball) but keep saying one more year in the A league....
If I won't see you in SD at least I will in Chicago this year.

For sure! And if you want to play senior, you are welcome to join the defending champions.
BTW, who did you play with in Chicago last year?

Just found out about this great site and will be playing in Palm Springs this weekend for L.A. Dawgs. (left Center). I wish I was playing in the volleyball tourney in New Orleans, anyone here going to either tourney?

KC sporty, I have been to past New Orleans volleyball tournaments...they are a BLAST. They typically attract quite a few teams - BIG tournament. They also usually split up the venues, with B and BB playing at one, and A and AA playing at another.

Played the Orlando tournament this weekend -- interested to hear how things went in Palm Springs. Orlando wasn't very well run, and if I hear that Palm Springs was, I'll be there next year.

Just got home from the Palm Springs softball tournament. Had alot of fun. Took 4th in the open division which was run really oddly. Open I 1st place was LA Vipers Open II was Phoenix Diablos 1st, 2nd LA Titans 3rd LA One eyed jacks 4th RFR Firemen. Open III ABC Mortgage 1st, 2nd Arizona team.
Any one else attend this tournament? How did you think it was run etc. I had some complaints about playing in Open division and having fields with no fences. Fields were not bad. At times officiating in our division was horrible and at other times was good.
Fun tournament. Barracks on sun was alot of fun

Tournament in Palm SPrings overall was run very well. They got behind on time a little but but they were able to catch up with it.
Distance to the fields from the hotel for the open II division was a ways. But the fields were in good condition other than no fence. And no fences does make a difference in open division someone can hit a ball in the gap and with a fence it stops and they are held to a double or maybe a triple.
Overall well run tournament.

Jeff, I played Long Beach over the 4th of July last year, and they didn't have fences either. I've heard the Series in San Diego will not have fences on all of their fields. Maybe it's just a California thing. At least it'll provide good experience if you're planning on playing in San Diego.

Weasleman.....I emailed the director of the palm springs tournament and she told me the reason was that every year they rotate where the divisions play. So next year open division will be on a different field. I have played in San diego a couple of times and they usually have fences. Maybe they are playing somewhere different than where they normally hold thier tournament.

Results are posted to the Palm Springs tournament at
www.pswinterclassic.com.
Phoenix won 2 divisions (open 2 and women's alternative). In addition, we also took 2 second places, 2 third places and a fourth place. Not bad for a little league in podunk!!!
The fields that we played on in C2 were pretty good although some (at Cathedral City High School) without fences. I heard from some of the other C teams that some fields were not very good.
Last year, my team played on fields in Indio that weren't fit for the crappiest little league team. So the fields this year were much improved. I guess that is the danger of running an enormous tournament in a small city.
I have to say that the weather was pretty good, but, boy, does it get cold in Palm Springs when that sun goes behind the mountain about 4 in the afternoon. wink

What other tournaments are people attending this year. We are doing the Usual Pheonix tournament in April. last year it rained and was friggin cold. And new this year we are going to do Atlanta. I hear its a great tournament and run well, good fields, good competition etc. any one else been. We are looking for some other tournaments to do also. We may be doing a triple crown in Vegas which is a straight tournament.

I'm headed to Tampa over President's Day weekend. WI is sending 3 teams.
As for the no fence thing, it does allow you to back up and play the pop fly. Minneapolis plays on fields without fences and that was a benefit to the lower rated teams. The better players just kept trying to hit it over your head. However, if you got back far enough, it was an easy pop fly. You just have to get a good jump on the short stuff. With the fences there, they would just hit it out of the park.

The Dairlyland classic in Milwaukee over Labor Day weekend is a VERY FUN tournament. I've played in tournaments since 1989 <including 4 World Series>, few have been more fun that this one.

We'll be playing Tampa. We're still trying to decide between Atlanta, Houston, and Minneapolis over Memorial Day, and we'll probably head to Chicago over July 4 (some of my team has done New York over the last two July 4ths, and wants to head somewhere else -- and Toronto runs their tournament in a WEIRD, WEIRD way, so we're not headed there).
Our regular season ends in May, so if we get the World Series bid, we'll need to stay competitive -- that will definitely be a factor in deciding our tournament schedule.

I played the Houston Tournament last year. It was fun. Fields are allright. It was the usual hot muggy houston. Bar at the fields selling pitchers of beer cheep. We drank a whole Lotta beer that tournament.
