Not a surprise that the Browns and Lions have axed their head coaches - but a bit of a surprise that the Jets have axed Mangini considering that just a month ago 'experts' had him pegged as a coaching genius who was ready to take his Jets all the way to Tampa for an all New York Super Bowl.

I wonder if Mangini going was a way for NY to keep the Favre. It has been reported that the two don't get along and Favre doesn't like the way Mangini calls him out. Well Brett...you had everything you wanted in Green Bay and could've stayed there. I hope this wasn't some sort of behind the scenes term of condition from the Favre in order to get him to stay. But, the Jets did collapse down the stretch. They beat Tennessee and some people were talkin about the Jets possibly being one of the best teams, and they absolutely stunk late in the season. Favre started throwin pick after pick and they were really bad.

Not that Mangini has proven himself to be a great coach, but if they're dumping him just in an effort to persuade Favre to stay, that's stupid.
Rumor has it that Bill Cowher is interested in joining the Jets but not the Browns.

One could just as easily blame
Bill Belichick for setting the standard for how a head coach can win consistently in a league that is approaching parity.
What else are teams going to do, when they've tried dropping and renewing all the other personnel?
It's unfortunate that the same standard doesn't hold in some parts of
Corporate America.
Inevitably he too will probably suffer from that system and his standards. But he's done a heckuva job and earned a lot of money on the way.

After the Bills meltdown, Dick Jauron can't go fast enough.....someone rip up that(alleged) extension and send him on the first plane out of here.

The 49ers got rid of offensive coordinator Mike Martz after he turned their offense around. Detroit did the same thing after the 06-07 season, and the Rams had previous dropped him despite a pretty decent head coaching record and 2002 Super Bowl appearance (when they were taped by the Patriots during workouts, but that's another issue). Mad Mike's problems seem to revolve around his difficult personality and control issues, I think, but if someone could hire a shrink to work with this guy, he could turn one of the more awful teams around, at least offensively. He'd have to have a very strong-willed defensive coordinator working with him, though.

Bill Cowher isn't interesteed in the Jets either, it turns out. Seems he wants no part of Brett Favre. I now officially love Bill Cowher.
There is now an opening in Denver and it has to be the most appealing job available at the moment. I can't imagine Shanahan stays unemployed for too long.

I think I speak for some out here who are looking forward to the Jim Mora era with the Seahawks. And the guy is rather hot as well, as has been mentioned here many times.

Sorry, but Jauron is staying. They said something about not needing to clean house, but would I be correct in assuming it's because they had just signed him to an extension and don't want to be paying two coaches until 2011 or whatever?

Tony Dungy is stepping down after a long run with the Colts according to reports. There is a 5pm news conference scheduled today. I know that asst. coach Jim Caldwell has been named Dungy's successor but I wonder, if Bill Cowher expressed an interest, would that change?

Sad to see Dungy go. I disagree with the man's politics regarding gays and lesbians, but he was a true pioneer of the NFL, and tops the list of 10 straight seasons of taking his teams to the playoffs (NFL record) and 6 straight seasons of at least 12 wins (NFL record). He is also tied with John Madden in terms of highest win percentage with a .759 win % with the Colts. Both men trail George Seifert, who stands at .766% when he was with the San Francisco 49ers. Ya done good Tony, and he didn't say never regarding coming back to coach.

Tampa Bay fires Jon Gruden (and GM Bruce Allen). Not too surprising after the Bucs' collapse this season.

It's not surprising. But why did they wait so long? I can't help but wonder if something else happened in the last three weeks.
The Jets are expected to decide on their coach soon but I wonder if Gruden being available might interest them?

I am still surprised by this, even with the collapse. I mean he won them a Superbowl! I know it was a while ago, but still. There's got to be more to this story.
What about the teams that have already hired George...that's what I've been wondering about.

Yeah he won a Super Bowl. But the Bucs were only 48-53 since then.

Yes he won a Super Bowl but he basically inherited a great defense that Tony Dungy built.

The Jets have hired Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and the Rams have hired Giants DC Steve Spagnualo. So are all the jobs filled now? Or is Denver still open?

Denver hired Josh McDaniels. Only the Raiders are still looking for a head coach, though they've hired some
new assistants, which makes perfect sense.

Oh yeah I'd forgotten that. Speaking of Denver, the recently ousted Mike Shanahan is said to be in line to take over for Herm Edwards, who was fired today by the Chiefs.
