Reports: Gupta approached for Surgeon General Post

Sounds good to me. I love watching him on CNN. He is knowledgeable in a vast array of medical and health related issues and lord knows he is easy on the eyes. Go Sanjay!!

Oops...should I have put this under fitness and health section? Oh well. It'll get moved if its in the wrong place.
fantomas
It could go under both categories, but he's a political appointee, so it belongs here. He's a hottie, and a smartie.
Darius
He also has a great sense of humor.
He did a segment with Bill Maher on Real Time a while back and used the "f" word.
At least he doesnt appear to be stuffy and rigid.
I hope he gets it.

I read a couple blurbs (by righties) who keep frowning on this saying stupid stuff like "Obama Picks News Reporter for Surgeon General"

Funny, I didn't hear them say that when Tony Snow was selelcted....

This just in: Judge Judy has been appointed Attorney General.

There are some dissenting views about this choice; Gupta unfairly slammed Michael Moore when Sicko first came out.

Nevertheless, Gupta is a practicing and highly regarded neurosurgeon and has been a policy advocate since his undergraduate years.

Given how awful some of the judges appointed or elected over the last 8 years have been, as well as how corrupt the Department of Justice has been, would Judge Judy Sheindlin not be an improvement?

Go Judge Judy! I thought it was kinda cool that she, although a lifelong Republican, came out in support of Obama before the election. One thing about Judge Judy is that she can see thru all the BS out there.

Gupta is not a bad pick in my opinion. Calling him just a "reporter" is really missing the point. Now if we can just get Suze Orman in Obama's cabinet then we could really whip this country into shape!

I love Sanjay Gupta. He's cool, smart, easy on the eyes, and he's a very good communicator--important for the Surgeon General, who needs to communicate national health policies and encourage and educate people about health matters.

As well as being a journalist, he's a highly qualified medical practitioner.

Atlanta medical officials are hoping that if celebrity doctor Sanjay Gupta becomes the next U.S. surgeon general, he will highlight health care issues important to his hometown institutions.

As associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, Gupta experienced firsthand the many travails the hospital must overcome as it serves as the region’s last-ditch hope for poor people to receive medical care.

Gupta is also familiar with the workings of Emory University, where he has served as an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the university’s School of Medicine and as a neurosurgeon at Emory University Hospital....

I would actually love to see her deal with politicians LOL "SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP, I'M TALKING...SHUT UP!"

Of all the Surgeon Generals, the one who caused the most controversy was Jocelyn Elders. Due to her advocacy of masturbation and teen-age sexuality, "Firing the Surgeon General" became a euphemism for jerking off!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

My recollection is that C. Everett Koop also became a lighning rod for controversy in the 80's for advocating that we use blunt language and sexual terms to teach people about safe sex.

I don't profess to know anything about Gupta's qualifications or lack thereof to be Surgeon General but I can imagine the outrage if Bush had picked him.
mdterp01
Why would people be up in arms if Bush had chosen Gupta?

I'm as anti-Bush as they come but it would be because Bush made the pick. I'm not singling anyone out but there are definitely some on here that, if Bush had picked him, would have gone crazy.

Of course. A lot of the same people who are praising the pick would have condemned it had it been a Bush pick.

They'll tie themselves in a knot insisting that's not so, but to continue the Judge Judy theme: don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining!

That about sums it up. The office is more political than professional. I don't think it's an important policy position so much as one in which good public health through personal responsibility can be promoted. Gupta is a good choice on that account. How effective he will be remains to be seen.
mdterp01
Ok once again I'm not seeing how if Bush had picked Gupta there would be all this criticism. I would've actually praised Bush because I like Gupta. Gupta is the main variable here, not who picked him. Calm down. IPB Image

Bush would never have picked Gupta because the latter is not a God-obsessed, right-wing Republican and he's too competent at his job! Bush did a pretty horrid job at his picks, BTW.

But then you probably know that his departing Secretary of the Interior spent $235,000 on his bathroom in the Interior building! Get back George Costanza, heck of a job....
