Jim:
Listened to your and Cyd's podcast about Matt Mitcham and the possibility that homophobia contributed to his dearth of endorsement deals. Your comments were excellent. And while I agree that there is no clear evidence of homophobia yet, we need to bear in mind that it can often go unspoken. Useful analogies might be the anti-semitism in US society in the mid-twentieth century that was explored in the Gregory Peck movie, "Gentleman's Agreement." Or practices of realtors who steer ever so gently buyers of color away from white neighborhoods.
Again, you're probably correct, yet I was reading an article in the latest issue of "Men's Health," entitled "Miracle on Ice" by Bryan Smith. Smith chronicles his weight loss and fitness gain through his taking up of ice skating and figure skating, protesting his heterosexuality and his "deep aversion to all things spangly." The article borders on, if not crosses over into, implied homophobia. Of course, this is in a magazine which loudly broadcasts its heterosexuality vis a vis sex tips with "your girlfriend or wife" in every issue. Yet I dare say, their readership is heavily gay. Here's a link to the article. Let me know what you think. I might write a letter to the editor, David Zinczenko.
