Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston, now in his second tour of duty with the team, received the Jackie Robinson Award for career achievement from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum at their 9th Annual Legacy Awards, presented to him by former Jay Joe Carter. Gaston "remains the only African-American manager to win a World Series, and the Jackie Robinson Award signifies career excellence in the face of adversity." 2008 Legacy Award Winners.

From yesterday's Toronto Star: Message to Blue Jays fans: Maybe next year "Forget about 2009, 'We're looking at the next five to 10 years, and not just one year,' Gaston says."
QUOTE
So instead of promising fans the team would surpass last year's performance – 86 wins and fourth place in the AL East – the trio pledged a competitive squad on the field and plenty of good times at the Rogers Centre.

"You're going to see in the next few years baseball that is very, very exciting," Beeston said, while raving about the talent in the team's minor-league pipeline. rolleyes.gif
* * *
Right now the team's payroll sits at about $80 million (all figures U.S.), down from about $100 million last season, and last night some fans attending the meeting at the Westin Harbour Castle wondered why the team didn't sign a free agent with some of the money they saved when pitcher A.J. Burnett ($13.2 million in 2008) opted out of his contract.

Beeston's response was a common one: It's the economy.

Good times! Sounds like they've got their excuses made before the season has even started. When in doubt, blame the economy. dry.gif
Bill W
To be realistic, they seem to have no shot at competing with the 3 teams ahead of them in that division.
canmark
Oh, I'm actually happy they're finally admitting that we have no chance. I could have told you that the past several seasons, during which they insisted that the team would be "competitive" and, if the stars were in alignment, the team just might get in there for a playoff spot. Yeah, right. dry.gif

The sad thing is that the Blue Jays are the best of the Toronto teams.
QUOTE
Going into last night, the four major sports teams are working on a collective winning percentage of .457. Only one other North American city with professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey teams is faring worse — Washington. The compilation includes the 2008 Blue Jays and Argonauts seasons and adds the current records of the Raptors and Maple Leafs in the 2008-09 NBA and NHL campaigns through Tuesday.
* * *
All four clubs fired head coaches in a seven-month span last year — Paul Maurice by the Maple Leafs on May 7, John Gibbons by the Blue Jays on June 20, Rich Stubler by the Argos on Sept. 9 and Sam Mitchell by the Raptors on Dec. 3. The Argos actually dumped two coaches, parting ways with Don Matthews after the CFL season.

A shakey B.J. Ryan leaves Blue Jays spring training camp to join Team USA in preparing for the World Baseball Classic.
QUOTE
After serving up four runs in two-thirds of an inning, Ryan began preparing for the short trip to Tampa, Fla., where he will join the back end of Team USA's bullpen for the World Baseball Classic. He could be gone for up to three weeks. And walking more batters (three) than he retired (two) on Saturday was not the last impression he wanted leave with manager Cito Gaston.

"You would have liked to have left here on a better note than that," Ryan said. "But in terms of where I think I need to be and where I am, it's closer than it looks."

canmark
Sign of the times: I just saw an ad in the paper for a Jays promotion called "Messin' with the Recession." Discounted tickets for selected games (as low as $5 for upper deck seats), $1 hot dogs and $4 programs.

A small part of me misses the days when the Phillies were in the Vet, good tickets were always available and not so expensive.

Cito Gaston calls out Roger Clemens. Ha! Globe and Mail.
QUOTE
Roger Clemens won two of his seven Cy Young Awards in the two years he was with the Toronto Blue Jays, but he didn't win many friends or allies.
* * *
But Gaston, who was rehired by the Blue Jays last June, after an 11-year absence, believes there's some truth to the idea that Clemens wielded influence with somebody, which led to the manager's dismissal.

"I wouldn't doubt that," Gaston said. "He's an ass**** himself, a complete ass****. I'd say that loud, right in his face. It's all about him, nobody else but him."

Gaston said that during the 1997 season he learned that Clemens was trying to undercut his authority - at one point, complaining behind the manager's back that he thought Gaston left pitcher Pat Hentgen in a game too long.

Gaston said it was a good thing Clemens didn't voice his complaint face-to-face.

"He wouldn't do that, otherwise there would have been a good ass-whippin' that day," Gaston said. "It might have been me, but he still would have known I was there."
* * *
"When he's on the mound, he's 100 per cent," Gaston said. "When he's pitching, everybody's in the dugout pulling for him. When he's not pitching, he's not in the dugout all the time. ... I just didn't feel like he supported his teammates as much as he wanted support."

The Rogers Centre is facing a 3-game booze ban due to liquor license infractions. 2 Blue Jays games will be alcohol free.
Joe in Philly
I wonder how they picked those games instead of, say, games vs. the Yankees or Red Sox?

Jays off to a 5-1 start, their best since 2001... when they finished 80-82. rolleyes.gif

Closer B.J. Ryan (making $12 million this season) has now blown 2 saves in 4 opportunities (and 2 saves) and sports an 11.12 ERA. Apparently, "manager Cito Gaston said he would chat with Ryan and GM J.P. Ricciardi about Ryan's role."

Jason Frasor, 3-0, 1 save, 0.00 ERA in 8.0 innings in 7 appearances, seems to be the lead candidate. Although lefty Scott Downs 8-0, 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings and 8 appearances, could also close.

Toronto's pitching staff currently has the 3rd best team ERA (3.97) in the AL. The offence is first in runs scored and first in batting average (.287).
canmark
Roy Halladay gets his 4th win, and the Jays go to 14-6, following 4-3 victory over the White Sox.

Despite leading the division, Jays see ticket sales decline sharply.
QUOTE
Attendance figures released for the month of April – which the Jays ended tied atop the AL East – show Toronto as baseball's third biggest loser in average attendance compared to 2008.

With 10 home games in the first month of the season, crowds at the Rogers Centre are down on average to 20,396 from 26,864 in 2008.

Washington, Detroit and Atlanta, join the Jays as the so-called biggest losers, according to baseball's monthly attendance report. The two Florida teams – the Marlins and Rays – show the biggest gains, followed by Oakland, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati.
* * *
The club has also adopted what it says is a more accurate account of ticket sales – reporting only tickets sold and excluding freebies and promotional tickets.

Meanwhile, Roy Halladay joins Matt Greinke as the only 2 pitchers in the league with 5 wins on the season (and is first in IP).

What I'd like to see, from every team in every league, is a full accounting -- tickets sold, tickets given away, and actual count of those who pass through the turnstiles.

To be fair to the Jays fans - nobody expected them to do well this year - so of course advance sales were down a fair bit as even management was not hyping this team as a playoff contender as they have in the past. In fact they were pretty much the consensus # 4 pick in the AL East. Combine that with the lousy economy and it is understandable that early season attendance would suffer. Plus last year 3 of the Jays first 10 home games were against the Red Sox and those three games averaged almost 39,000 per game - as the Red Sox and Yankees draw much bigger crowds than any other teams and neither of them have played at the Rogers Centre yet this season.

If the Jays keep winning - and they won another extra inning thriller today and lead the AL at 17-9 and in fact have the best record in the league dating back all the way to last June when Cito came back as manager - the crowds should grow. People are talking about the Jays again and you can sense a renewed excitement surrounding this team.

And hopefully that will include a big gay and lesbian turnout for Pride Group night at the Jays on Thursday June 25th against the Cincinnati Reds. Baseline field level tickets that normally sell for $38.50 (including service fees) will be going for $33.00 total including all taxes and fees = with $3.00 per ticket going to Pride too.

Jays now 20-10, most runs in the majors (189). Roy Halladay tied with Zack Greinke with 6 wins.
canmark
Roy Halladay becomes the majors' first 7-game winner, following a 5-1 victory over (ex-Jay) A.J. Burnett and the Yankees in front of 43,000+ (the previous Tuesday night game drew 22,000).

=============

Ah, the fickle Blue Jays fans. While Tuesday night's game against the Yankees drew 43,000+, Wednesday night's game (an 8-2 loss against the same Yankees) drew only 20,000+.

Hey Mark - unfortunately I was one of those 20,000 or so last night. One of the Jays worst games of the year. So now the Jays have lost both games I have gone to in person this year. Maybe I should just stay away. lol

MLB bans YouTube vids of "fake umps" at Blue Jays games.

QUOTE
Tim Williams wears an authentic American League umpire's uniform, stations himself behind home plate at Rogers Centre and rings up batters with zeal.

He does it from the first row of the stands, though, and that has started to turn heads.

Williams and a friend were the two "fake umpires" noticed by broadcast crews for New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians during recent Blue Jays home games.

Three clips of Williams and Farrell in action were later posted on YouTube. One had more than 12,000 viewings; however as of last night, the clips had been deleted at the request of Major League Baseball's copyright czars. mad.gif

Jays now on a 6-game losing streak. They've fallen out of first place in the AL East (Boston), and are only a half game ahead of the third place Yankees.

Now a 7-game losing streak and the Jays have fallen to 3rd in the AL East.

It gets worse 0-9 on their 9 game road trip with yesterday's game taking the cake. Halladay leaves after 7 strong innings with a 5 run lead - and the bullpen blows it. Then in extra innings the Jays take the lead again - only to have the pen blow it AGAIN 12-10! First time ever in the teams history that they lost all the games of a 9 game road trip.

And with no Halladay to face Boston in any of the three games here this weekend - we may down in 4th place in the division, 4 or 5 games back and old news by the end of May, something I would have thought to be impossible just one week ago. What a disappointing collapse! How typically Toronto of them. Sigh.

Roy Halladay's career-high 14 strikeouts of the Angels leads to his MLB-leading 9th win.
Joe in Philly
Does Halladay have a no-trade clause? Is there any chance that he would be traded if the Jays are well out of the playoff race by the trade deadline? Preferably to a team that plays its home games in the 215 area code? wink.gif

I'm supposed to see him pitch on Wednesday. It would be a shame if he had to miss that start...although it would, at the same time, improve the chances of my leaving the park happy. wink.gif
canmark
Halladay day-to-day, and sounds like he will miss the Philly series.

QUOTE
For now, the Blue Jays have no plans to place Roy Halladay on the disabled list. An MRI exam performed on their ace on Saturday confirmed that he suffered a mild right groin strain during his abbreviated start one night earlier.

That being the case, Halladay is considered day-to-day and could be available to pitch as early as June 20, when Toronto will need a starter for the second tilt of a three-game Interleague series on the road against the Nationals. Right-hander Scott Richmond will take Halladay's turn on Wednesday in Philadelphia to give the pitcher a few extra days to rest.
* * *
The Jays will use the next week to monitor Halladay, who leads the Majors in wins (10) and innings (103) and has a 2.53 ERA in 14 outings.
canmark
It's not often you get a 5-run victory in extra innings. Thank you, Philadelphia Phillies, for handing the Jays a 8-3 win in 10 innings.
Joe in Philly
It's possible when you can't have your starter go beyond 6 innings and your relievers walk 8 batters in 4 innings, including two bases-loaded walks. blink.gif

Roy Halladay and Scott Downs put on DL.

QUOTE
The Jays announced that starter Roy Halladay and closer Scott Downs will both be placed on the disabled list Thursday. The team will put Halladay on the DL retroactive to June 13, so he'll be eligible to return June 28.
* * *
The loss of Halladay is a significant blow to a Toronto team that's gone 8-17 since a 27-14 start. Halladay leads the American League with 10 wins and 103 innings pitched, and he ranks fifth in strikeouts (88) and ERA (2.53).
* * *
The Blue Jays have already lost pitchers Jesse Litsch, Ricky Romero and Ryan to the disabled list this season, while Casey Janssen has made two trips to the DL. In addition, pitchers Shaun Marcum and Dustin McGowan are both recovering from arm surgery.

canmark
Ex-Blue Jay now-Phillies Jayson Werth's 500-level home run yesterday was only the 14th upper deck home run in Rogers Centre history.

The AL East is stacked and boy does that make life tough for my Jays. The good news - Roy Halladay is back tonight against the Rays. The bad news - check-out the most recent power rankings and then check-out the Jays' sked for the next month.

The MLB Power Rankings. Three of their AL East rivals in the top 4. Red Sox #2, Yankees #3 and the surging Rays #4. The Jays schedule over the next month has them playing 16 of their next 22 games against those three teams. We'll see if the Jays are still hanging in contention for at least a wildcard after that tough stretch.

Is this the Jays raising the white flag for this season? Word today from their GM J.P. Ricciardi that for the first time ever they are now willing to listen to offers for Roy Halladay instead of just ignoring all offers as they have in the past. Let the bidding war begin!

I'm happy for Halladay, that he might achieve release from the Blue Jays. Truly one of the franchise greats, in 12 loyal seasons he's amassed a 141-68 career record. But he's never had the chance to pitch in the post season. He's got one more year on his contract and does have a no trade clause, but at 32 years of age I'm sure he knows the clock is ticking. He wants to shine in the playoffs while he's in his top form. And how many chances does he have left? After all those year's of believing J.P.'s talk about being a "contender," and all those year's of the team's failing, Roy hasn't complained. And, ultimately, it isn't Roy who's asking to be traded, it's J.P. who's publicly entertaining offers. If they open the prison gates, Roy, take it. Run.

From ESPN.com:

QUOTE
Right now, the team most aggressively searching for a front-line starting pitcher is the Philadelphia Phillies, who no doubt would covet Halladay for their particular park for his ability to generate ground balls and missed swings -- he has a ground ball/fly ball ratio of 1.30, to go along 98 strikeouts in 116 innings this season. The question about the Phillies -- as it is with most teams these days, when the value of young players has never been higher -- is whether they would be willing to give up what the Jays would require in trade.

From SI.com:

QUOTE
Halladay is 10-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts. He'll be paid $14.25 million this year and his contract, which has a no trade clause, expires after the 2010 season, when he's set to earn $15.75 million.

"Really at this point, I just want to focus on my job here," Halladay said.
The 17th overall pick in 1995, Halladay has spent his entire career with the Blue Jays, amassing a career mark of 141-68 with a 3.47 ERA. He won the Cy Young Award in 2003 and finished second to Cleveland's Cliff Lee last season.

Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi on Tuesday said he's willing to listen to offers for Halladay.
canmark
Blue Jays release B.J. Ryan. He had been on a 5-year $47 million deal and will still be owed about $15 million. For their $47 million the Jays got 2 good seasons from Ryan, 75 total saves over 3.5 seasons.

From Richard Griffin in the Toronto Star on J.P. Ricciardi's trades:

QUOTE
Besides, the GM's track record at trading established players for prospects stinks. Really it does. Here are the facts, on the 17 deals by Ricciardi when he has had to trade an established position player or pitcher in large part because of salary considerations:

In those 17 deals, he has sent out 20 players and received 20 players in return. Eight of the 20 men he sent away from the Jays are still in the majors – Cesar Izturis, Felipe Lopez, Orlando Hudson, Miguel Batista, Scott Schoenweis, Eric Hinske, Troy Glaus and David Eckstein. Here's the clinching stat. Over eight years, just three of the 20 players he received in return are still in the organization – Scott Rolen, Jeremy Accardo and Brian Wolfe. Given that, why would Rogers allow an in-season trade with Halladay?
* * *
The 17 trades were, in chronological order, were sending away 1-Billy Koch, 2-Alex Gonzalez, 3-Paul Quantrill, 4-Brad Fullmer, 5-Pedro Borbon (maybe a little sketchy), 6-Dan Plesac (and yes I would question that Cliff Politte was a good move), 7-Raul Mondesi, 8-Felipe Lopez, 9-Shannon Stewart (and you can't use the commutativbe theory for Ted Lilly because Bobby Kielty does not qualify as an established player for purposes of this study), 10-Orlando Hudson and Miggy Batista, 11-Corey Koskie, 12-Shea Hillenbrand, 13-Scott Schoenweis, 14-Terry Adams (also sketchy), 15-Eric Hinske, 16-Troy Glaus, 17-Dave Eckstein.
canmark
The Jays have now fallen to .500 and the fire J.P. rumblings are getting louder (finally!). It's even been suggested by some (Richard Griffin of the Star) that J.P. will not be the deal-maker if Roy Halladay is to be traded. J.P.'s judgement is not to be trusted. Finally, the organization and the fans are waking up.

I'm reading that the Phillies are interested in... Pedro Martinez!

Roy Halladay was tagged with a tough (3-2) loss today, and the Jays fall below .500 for the first time this season.
phillyrunner
I have heard the rumor that Pedro is all but signed to a one year deal. rolleyes.gif If that's true I guess Toronto may have to narrow their list of suitors.
Joe in Philly
Signing Martinez shouldn't mean the Phils can't go after Halladay. It might, but it shouldn't. Martinez can replace Rodrigo Lopez. Halladay can replace anyone else but Hamels.

And guess what? The Jays are 4th in the AL East. As I was telling people earlier in the season when the Jays got off to a hot start and had the best record in the majors: just wait till the All Star Break and see where they are in the standings. Well, it's the All Star Break and the Jays are 4th in the AL East, 2 games under .500, and 11 games out of first place. Ho hum, another lost season under the leadership of GM J.P. Ricciardi. rolleyes.gif
Travelpat
Not that I'm a huge J.P. Ricciardi fan - I am not - but who could possibly have foreseen the whack of injuries to completely wipe out the Jays pitching staff. For the first time since their inaugural season the Jays have started 12 different pitchers this season and something like 24 different pitchers have been used overall.

No team in baseball would be at 500 with the the injuries the Jays pitching staff have been hit with this season! Never mind two of their highest paid offensive players - Rios and Wells suffering through perhaps their worst seasons ever. I'm sorry but you can't blame J.P. for that.

Things were so bad with the Jays pitching staff at one point - when Halladay was out - that the combined CAREER records in the majors for the five Jays starting pitchers was something like 20-20 whereas over 200 career wins were on the DL or out for the season with injuries.

Halladay and Hill - one of the many individual good news stories (along with Romero, Rolens, Lind, Scutaro, Downs and Frasor) for the Jays this season - will start for the AL tomorrow night in the all-star game.
