GOP elects first African-American party chairman
QUOTE
Republican officials voted Friday to elect their first black national party chairman, a response in part to election defeats that have left the party's base more white and Southern at a time when the country is growing more diverse.

The election of Michael Steele puts in the limelight a charismatic black who has championed outreach to minorities as key to the party's future. It also gives the GOP a symbolic counterbalance to President Barack Obama, the nation's first black president, as it courts minority voters and attempts to overhaul its image.

We have an image problem," he said. "We've been mis-defined as a party that doesn't care, a party that's been insensitive, a party that's unconcerned about minorities, a party that's unconcerned about the lives and expectations and dreams of average Americans."

I see this for what it is. Had Obama lost and McCain won and had they not lost so bad in house and senate seats, Steele doesn't win that chairmanship. Hell, the guy that put out the Barack the Magic Negro CD was still in the running. The fact that no one pressured him to step aside (real pressure...not that fake outrage that a few of them had just for public) and the fact that he chose not to take himself out of the running says a lot. Steele is ok because he's not a douche like Rush. I respect the fact that he realizes the party has to take on a new direction, but I still disagree with the majority of his other views.

Mis-defined? The party that counted on Sarah Palin to draw Hillary Clinton's disaffected supporters, what with them both being women and all? The party that wants to keep brown people out of the country, and black people away from the voting booth? The party that blames union workers for the US auto industry's death spiral? The party whose concern with human life begins at conception and ends at birth? THAT mis-defined party?

Good luck with your sensitive, concerned party there, Mr Steele...

Give credit where its due- What year did the Democratic party elect its first African American party chairman? Well the Repubs are a little behind, but theyt are geting there. I know - you already elected your first black PRESIDENT - BUT credit the Repubs with moving along at least. They are changing- slowly -yes, and probably cuz they lost the election BUT its still change, none the less. And as we all know -" Change is good"

No, Democrats NOMINATED their first black presidential candidate.

AMERICANS elected their first black president.

THANK YOU!!! I read that and was speeding to type a similar response. Sarah Palin was picked in response to Democratic progressiveness as a hail mary pass and Michael Steele was chosen because of Democratic progressiveness and a majority of the American electorate who decided that the Republicans haven't got a clue. Particularly, minorities like myself who see no role and no place for myself in the Republican party even though I adhere to a few Republican ideals.

Copman, seriously, are you f*cking kidding me? This is the cheapest, most transparent, desparate ploy since Sarah Palin. Please tell me you were kidding. I know you know better. The Republicans are soooo toast. They are going to be toast for a long, long time thanks to all the debt they've saddled us with, good for at least the next two generations!

I agree with copman. This change should be welcomed. After its losses in November, the GOP needs to reevaluate itself. Change is caused pro-actively and re-actively. The GOP also has a progressive tradition from Teddy Roosevelt to Jacob Javits. Maybe he'll tap into it. JFK's administration was not all that interested in Civil Rights, until the issue was forced upon it, only to be realized under Johnson.

And, of course, it's political! Both parties and all politicians engage in it! How do you think Clinton got her plum appointment? Or how Biden was picked as VP (so-called expertise to offset relative inexperience)? Or the likelihood Judd Gregg is to be appointed commerce secretary? Obama may get his veto-proof Senate. It's politics! More akin to horse trading.

Do politicians arise to the level of statesmanship? At times. Lincoln, FDR, a few others maybe. Always, though, when a crisis forces them to be. The last opportunity for statesmanship was squandered.

I'm willing to see what this man does with the GOP. BTW, Howard Dean is not given the credit he deserves for transforming the Democrats under his leadership, IMHO

Hear here! Nearly 70 million (69,456,897 to be exact) Americans from 28 states, DC, and a Nebraska district elected our 44th President, Barack Obama!

One good thing I can say about Michael Steele is that he's hot. He's an idiot, but a hot one.

Republicans have no one to blame but themselves for spending like a drunken sailor when they were in control, but their profligate ways will pale in comparison to this ridiculous "stimulus" bill working its way through Congress. There are parts of that bill I think are good, but the vast majority of it is horrendous and will cripple our economy worse than Bush and Carter did! Mark my word: the dollar will weaken substantially, and inflation will skyrocket to levels not seen since the Carter days or earlier. I hope the Democrats and Republicans in the Senate can work together and strip the bill of everything NOT related to job creation, which is a good chunk of that bill.

OK - If they named a w/m then they would be racists. They elect an african american male, then they are pandering. Who did you think would have been a better pick- I know, I know you don't care, but you should hope the Repubs get more progressive. It helps us all, doesn't it? You say this is a desperate ploy, maybe he was the best man for the job? But of course it was political, as are most appointments made by both sides. rolleyes.gif

Given a choice between a pro-affirmative action black man and an arguably racist white man, RNC fatcats went for the black guy, 91-77. That's a good thing. Now let's stick to making fun of the stupid things the new chairman says, such as "Not in the history of mankind has the government ever created a job."

Like I said, the man's an idiot. But he fits in perfectly with the party he'll be running!

Michael Steele apologizes to Rush. Now who's running the party?
QUOTE
The new chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele, apologized to Rush Limbaugh on Monday after describing him in a television interview over the weekend as an “entertainer” who made incendiary and sometimes ugly remarks, party officials said.

Mr. Steele called Mr. Limbaugh after the radio host belittled Mr. Steele on his show, questioning his authority and saying the new Republican leader was off “to a shaky start.”
* * *
“Mr. Steele: You are head of the R.N.C.,” Mr. Limbaugh said. “You are not head of the Republican Party. Tens of millions of conservatives and Republicans have nothing to do with the R.N.C. and right now they want nothing to do with it.”
* * *
Mr. Steele bristled after a questioner on CNN referred to Mr. Limbaugh as the de facto leader of the Republican Party on Saturday.

“No he’s not – I’m the de facto leader of the Republican Party,” Mr. Steele responded.

“Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer,” he said. “Rush Limbaugh, the whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it’s incendiary, yes, it’s ugly.”

Mr. Steele told Politico on Monday that he had called Mr. Limbaugh to apologize.

“My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh,” Mr. Steele told The Politico. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”

Who did you think would have been a better pick-
Stephen Colbert, because words speak louder than actions. And he, unlike Jon Stewart, has managed to remain funny without Bush in office.

His satirical rap last night was "F@cking brilliant!" as Catherine Tate's Nan character would say.

I can't believe Steele bowed down to that pill poppin blowhard. rolleyes.gif Oh wait...sure I can. Its Michael Steele and he'a puppet right now who will do what he is told to try and gain whatever clout he can. I will tell you this though....Rush Limbaugh is way too divisive. Any Republican who wants to win gains in 2010 and get the White House back in 2012 need to step in and do some damage control. I will give it to Rush that the man does what he does, gets paid very well for it, and has a major following. But anyone hoping the President of the United States fails is an ass****. As much as I disliked Bush I never wanted him to fail because this is the country I live in and love. Certain policies I didn't want to see fail, but I never said I want "him" to fail. Now had Obama said the same thing about Bush there would be a "he's anti-American" shitfest from Republicans from Maine to California and everywhere in between.

All I can say is that the GOP rank & file have sunk to a new low! Apologizing to fat bastard is the lowest of the low, indeed. Given the history of the tough talking GOPers, I'm surprised that Steele even bowed to the pressure. I would have reminded the party loyalists that not all GOP party members think like Rush & his ilk. My prediction is still that it's about to implode! I can't see any reasonable Republican adhering to the far-right's tactics, agenda, & leadership. Many will abandon ship & their numbers will dwindle. Most will become Independents.

Well since Pete Sessions called for a Jihad against the Obama adminstration it would seem that GOP are still struggling with how to fulfill their role in opposition.
Here are a few suggestions, support what you can from the Administration, what you cant support come up with workable suggestions in stead, dont just preach negativity, try and work with the new Administration, show that you are adult enough to be bi-partisan, back away from Limbaugh and his ilk and work for the good of the entire nation not just big business, join the 21st century, reach out to non-white America because very soon non-whites will be the majority, its ok to be fiscally conservative but put aside social policies that interfere in peoples private lives......

I don't see them every night, but c'mon. Stewart on Obama sounding like he'd cure cancer in last week's speech: "What are you, a f***ing WIZARD?!?" And on the Speaker's jack-in-the-box leaps to her feet: "Pelosi is 1/8 gopher."

Regardless of who heads the GOP they will never recover until they break the habit of allowing their "minority" of fundametalists to continue blaming blacks (for taking bad loans) Jews (for giving bad loans), gays (for getting married and getting a cut of marriage benefits) and now Latinos (for taking jobs as illegal immigrants), instead of trying to work as fellow citizens to build a better country.

SC, I am afraid Rush is not worth the effort. Kind of ironic, isn't it, coming from a drug abuser. Hopefully, he'll sober up some day and realize how evil he truly is. I am not holding my breath. What's the old saying...those who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones?

Michael Steele's new argument against gay marriage: it'll cost small business.

QUOTE
Republicans can reach a broader base by recasting gay marriage as an issue that could dent pocketbooks as small businesses spend more on health care and other benefits, GOP Chairman Michael Steele said Saturday.

Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles. Steele said he used the argument weeks ago while chatting on a flight with a college student who described herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal on issues like gay marriage.

"Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."
millerbeach
...and that sir, is the cost of doing business. Do you want to have a profitable business? Of course. That is why a SMART, and note the word smart, businessperson offers benefits that are fair to all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation. Some of those firecracker employees just may be gay, which would behove any smart businessperson to offer the same benefits to a gay couple as they would a hetero couple. Just wondering, this new brain-trust of the Republican party, does he sit there and say the same thing to a single straight person when they decide to wed and add their spouse to their employer benefits package? Keep up the good work Mr. Steele! Next thing you know, you'll be chairman of the committee to re-elect Barack Obama 2012! laugh.gif

What is Michael Steele doing racking up bills for private jets, 5-star hotels and at Voyeur... an S&M-themed club in LA? cool.gif (Michael Steele says the latter has nothing to do with him.)
QUOTE
The Republican National Committee and its chairman, Michael S. Steele, were engulfed in controversy again Monday after new financial reports showed that the party used tens of thousands of donor dollars for luxe hotels, private jets and other questionable expenditures.
* * *
Although it is not unusual for either party to spend money in tony settings to cater to wealthy donors, the RNC's latest filings captured widespread attention for one expenditure at a risque nightclub: $1,946.25 for "meals" at Voyeur in West Hollywood, which features topless dancers wearing horse bridles and other bondage gear while mimicking sex acts. ohmy.gif

The committee fired an unidentified staff member as a result of the disbursement and emphasized Monday that Steele had not visited the club and was not aware of the expenditure. The reimbursement went to Erik Brown, a Southern California GOP donor who has spent time with Steele in the past and whose marketing firm has earned more than $160,000 from the RNC and other Republican committees, according to campaign disclosure records.
* * *
Steele also has come under fire for his management of the organization's finances. The RNC had more than $22 million on hand when he arrived last year, but is down to less than $10 million, despite raising a record $96 million during that time, records show.

I don't see a thing wrong with that...other than the utter hypocrisy typical of most rethuglicans.
