http://buzz.yahoo.com/article/1:y_news:8f9...s-openly-gay-APNot sure what is more upsetting, the topic itself or the nasty haters that have posted their stupidity in the Yahoo comments section. :-\

Definitely the comments are more offensive. They should crawl back under the rock they live under.

Unfortunately, we will always get comments like this. There are a lot of morons and haters in this world. But they don't worry me! I am more concerned with an administration that has yet to address this issue, despite its campaign promises. Oh, and before anyone comments that it is still early in its tenure, this administration has argued that it is necessary to move forward quickly on a host of issues. Why not this one, too?

I'm a big fan of this quote.
I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant.

"Fired" ? The author is clueless. The military doesn't "fire". It "discharges".

An honourable discharge at that. Not what is wanted but at least the Army doesn't go down the line of 'dem gays is filthy, and they'd infect other fine Americans with gay".

Unfortunately when the military became a "voluntary" force it effectively converted soldiers to mercenaries, making the term "firing" more accurate than we would llike.
In addition, it made it more clear than ever that the US government is becoming an employer of last resort just as it is insurer of last resort for the floundering financial industry.
In that sense being discharged has become a lot more like being fired, like it or not.
I am not make a value judgement on the appropriateness of the term "fired" but an observation about the nature of modern military service.
