Gavin Newson joins the crowded race for the Democratic nomination.

QUOTE
Newsom will have to work hard if he's going to pull off what would be a come-from-behind victory. According to a Field Poll conducted last month, Newsom is running third behind two other Democrats who could enter the race for their party's nomination, state Attorney General Jerry Brown and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. And if Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein jumps in the race, she'd lead all three by a wide margin.

Newson is using the new media, making his announcement on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

QUOTE
Aiming to stake his claim to the tech-savvy young voters who helped elect President Obama, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, 41, today took to the new media to formally announce he's running for governor - by directly addressing hundreds of thousands of supporters simultaneously via YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

The gubernatorial candidate's announcement video, which premiered on his Web page, GavinNewsom.com, utilizes three languages - English, Spanish and Mandarin - as well as images of solar technology, schools and health care facilities. It argued that Newsom - now in his second term as the city's mayor - has created jobs, helped San Francisco establish a rainy day reserve and budgetary "sound fiscal policy," and has tackled the challenge of providing universal health care to the uninsured.

Yeah, Newsom terms out (two-term limit) at the end of his current stint as mayor, and he's been sniffing around the governorship for a while.

He's an okay mayor for the most part, but I don't think he's governor material.

Is AG Jerry Brown the same Jerry Brown who was governor back in the 70s? I have to think that Newsome wouldn't have much of a chance coming from San Francisco and being for gay marriage having much of a chance in a state that voted pretty overwhelmingly against it.

I know little about him beyond his support of same-sex marriage, his marital scandal, and his liberal politics. Why don't you consider him "governor material"? After Schwarzenegger, who would be on the Democratic or GOP sides?

Regardless of who becomes governor I suspect the threat of some Yes on 8 folks to recall justices would backfire.

It is hard to imagine California to elect a governor who would replace the current ones with someone who is anti-equal rights for gays on a constitutional basis.

Does anyone else see that happening - the installation of a Yes on 8 justice that is?

Yes, it's the same Jerry Brown.

I wouldn't call a 52-48 spread overwhelming.

Right now Senator Dianne Feinstein is leading in the polls for Democrats. Newsom is dead last in a field of four.

My reasons are pretty much what you've outlined, fantomas, except for the marital scandals. Nobody cares in any meaningful way about who any straight person sleeps with in these parts. His problem is that the San Francisco modus vivendi and its politics don't necessarily play all that well in other parts of the state, and Newsom is just too SF. Also, he isn't running the City any better than his predecessors. There are no outstanding accomplishments that would make any other Californians vote for him.

By the way, Feinstein used to be the Mayor of San Francisco in the late 80's and early 90's, but she's not just SF, and the whole state elected her senator.

Good grief, Feinstein will be 76 in June. Is she really gonna run for Governor? And would she be elected? She would be 80 at the end of a FIRST term! I hate to sound agist, but is an 80-year old really up to running a state that is larger and more complex than most countries?

Reagan was pretty old, not sure of his age, but he was up there. Don't let chronological years fool you...I've got a 91 year old neighbor who'd be a pretty sharp governor if she were to run!

I won't speak for MM, but let me put it another way: surely there have to be other smart, engaging and potentially victorious Democrats than the GOP-lite Dianne Feinstein or retreat Gerry Brown. Right? Perhaps Newsome is too closely identified with San Francisco and Villaraigosa has his own problems (he's nice to look at, though), but aren't there some vibrant young-to-middle-aged Democrats who might take California in a new direction?
