CNN: Sunday Morning-NAACP: No Gay Rights Policy

I had an interesting conversation with Mr. Jealous about this very issue shortly after he became the new NAACP President. I am a big fan of Mr. Jealous but what people must realize is that the NAACP is still very much rooted in the very homophobic and often hypocritical Black church, and that many of its supporters are against gay marriage. The YouTube clip basically says it all, but I do agree with him re: "Gay, straight, Black, White...same struggle...same fight" UMMM....NO!!!! I've said before it is not the same But, I'm sure the debates about the gay marriage issue are quite heated among NAACP board members. But, this is the first NAACP President that I believe will move the organization from going any further right on this issue. He's young and personally is accepting of gay rights, but is the head of a very old school organization. Jealous is the right step and I'm hoping that his influence can change things. I always say that we have to be done with the older, conservative section of America and things will change as the integrated, more socially accepting crew take over. The issue with the younger crew of a lot of blacks is that I know a lot of younger blacks who are so against gay marriage. Now its certainly less than the older ones, but the church has such a powerful influence, and they have picked it up from their parents and from their pastors. But, I hope that Jealous can at least open the dialogue because the NAACP is in the dark ages about black homosexuality and the AIDS crisis.
