Richard Hofstadter wrote an excellent essay that became a book about the crazy right (and left) 45 or so years ago, titled The Paranoid Style in American Politics: And Other Essays. The birthers' nuttiness is nothing new in US politics. It's also nothing new when we have a Democratic president.

Remember that when Bill Clinton was running and later was elected in 1992, right-wing nuts claimed that he'd killed people in Arkansas. They claimed that Hillary Clinton was involved in Vince Foster's death. They claimed that Bill Clinton was a cokehead. They claimed that he'd raped women in the White House. And on and on. All of this extreme nuttiness was aided and abetted by the US mainstream media.

This is the same US "mainstream," corporate media that has offered up only cursory reporting on the widespread, 8-year+ illegal spying on American citizens.

This the same US media that also lied extensively about and mocked Al Gore. They lied and claimed he said he invented the Internet (he never said that). They lied and said Naomi Wolf had picked his clothes out for him. (He never said that.) They lied and claimed that he was NOT one of the inspirations for Erich Segal's novel Love Story. (Segal said Gore was.) And so on. Of course the GOP helped propagate this crap, when they weren't creating it outright, but the media is as much to blame for the disaster we now know George Bush was.

Orly Taitz is one in a long line of nuts who've made an appearance on the US scene. She won't be the last. The greater danger is the sort of craziness the GOP and media are always fomenting. These things always turn out badly, and they know it.

Who the f**k is Zsa Zsa Gabor bitch? She's a lawyer, a real estate agent and a dentist! But you know what? The Dems need to step up the attacks on these loons because for every crazy idea/rumor/lie out there, there are a million people ready to believe it and accept it as fact.

If you didn't see it last week, you must watch this clip from Bill Maher's show about this nonsense.

OMG, between Salon.com (they're obsessed with the birthers) and HuffingtonPost.com, I feel like I'm reading a birther story every day of the week. Enough!
shep71
I think this is all non-sense, but the only people I seem to be hearing about on this story are the "liberals", who just bring it up day after day. I'm a huge Rachal Madow fan, watch her nearly every night, but enough already. Move on.

Tell that to the media. rolleyes.gif

...Hopefully the public realizes that they're all nuts!

I think that Bill Maher makes a good point though. Many people are gullible. Add that to a right wing who would love nothing more than to discredit President Obama in any way, and they will be ready to latch onto anything. I think making these people look like the fools they are can hopefully show people that this stuff is nonsense. George had it right in that when one person brings up something like this, there are a million people ready to believe it, no matter how much THE FACTS show them its not the case. So while I am tired of hearing of it as well, I brought it up because this was the first time I had heard of this Taitz woman. I mean could she have made herself look any crazier in that interview? John Kerry didn't bother to do anything in the Swiftboat attacks and I think its time the Democrats stop being such pussies, take the gloves off, and start punching some people in the mouths.

Bill Maher said it best in that the Democrats always seem to find a way to screw it up and they need to be more like Republicans in that when they are in power they have an ideology, an agenda, and they push their shit through regardless of who agrees with them. The Democrats control all 3 branches of gov't and can't seem to decide if they want honey mustard or dijon. I wish they'd learn how to fight fire with fire.

shep71 hit the nail on the head. The media figures pounding this birther lunacy the hardest are the likes of liberals like Rachel Maddow. I'm guessing it's an attempt of the unbiased MSM to portray all conservatives and and any who dare speak against The Messiah as a bunch of deranged nutjobs. Where was all this MSM focus when the likes of Rosie O'Donnell and the 9/11 Truthers were insisting that the Bush Administration blew up the WTC, when Spike Lee and others suggested that George W. Bush blew up the levees in the midst of Katrina to kill or scatter the poor blacks in and around New Orleans, or when Cynthia McKinney said that American forces executed 5,000 prisoners and dumped their bodies in the swamps of Louisiana?? But they're yammering on and on about these birther nuts every single night because of their <drip sarcasm>deep-held commitment to objective journalism</drip sarcasm>. On the other hand, all the media that the left loves to hate, such as Fox News, the American Spectator, Human Events, National Review, Ann Coulter, and Bill O'Reilly, have all stated that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii (not sure if it was a hospital or a manger) and that the birthers are a bunch of fringe nuts. Damn that Fox News! you can't trust them on anything!!

T. Boone Pickens offered a million dollars to anyone who could discredit the Swiftboaters, and I think the offer's still good. With all the pay-cuts and layoffs in journalism, you would think one starving journalist would use his severance to keep the bill collectors at bay while doing the nominal work necessary to disprove the Swiftboaters' allegations. But alas ...

I don't remember much of what John Kerry said in the 2004 campaign because I try to forget anything and everything about my former Mass. senators. But who can forget that it was seared -- **SEARED** -- into his memory being in Cambodia in December 1968 when Nixon was President. There was no GPS at the time, but military experts are pretty damn sure he wasn't in Cambodia at the time. But hey, that's debatable, and I certainly wasn't there. What isn't debatable is that Nixon wasn't inaugurated as President until January 1969. Yeah, those darn Swiftboaters.

Even Ann Coulter has called this Orly Taitz woman a crackpot so I'm not sure this movement has much traction. But a recent MSNBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed that something like 68% of Southerners either believe Obama wasn't born in the US or weren't sure. In the Northeast, West and Midwest, around 90% of those polled believe he was born in Hawaii. So there is a pretty significant segment of the population in one section of the country that also happens to be the base for the Republican party that has been buying into this stuff.

This article is a bit long but worth reading. It [sarcastically] gives the full details about this crazed woman's obsession w/ Obama...& it figures she'd be from OC, CA.

...Btw, somebody should tell her to get rid of that fugly wig. tongue.gif

She truly is looney...& love these quotes: laugh.gif

There’s a term some use for people like Taitz, and she doesn’t like it. It’s “birther”—or, if you want to be really mean, “birfer.” (The controversy was born on the Internet, so naturally the Internet gave it a goofy name.)...Taitz, a Laguna Niguel dentist with a law degree from an online academy, has been awarded a few creative variations on the birther term: “The Queen Bee of Birferstan” is probably the best.

“That’s demeaning,” Taitz says. “I don’t call anybody names.”
LOL! “The Queen Bee of Birferstan”. & "yeah right" to her response! rolleyes.gif

QUOTE
And that’s how Taitz ended up being sued by Berg, Ostella, Liberi and others in federal court in Pennsylvania. On May 17, Berg posted on his website, ObamaCrimes.com...

& this I agree w/:

On that last charge, Orly-watchers are nervous. “In my opinion, Orly herself is not dangerous in the sense that she would pull the trigger on the president,” says Haggard. “She is dangerous in that she attracts people who might.”

Exactly SC....like that fool from Pittsburgh who shot the cops up fearing his guns were going to be taken away, and the nutjob who opened fire at the Holocaust museum in DC believing similarly and that the Holocaust is a hoax. All of this right wing talk of Socialism and whispers Obama isn't a citizen is ramping people up. So yes...its not Taitz I'm worried about, but rather like the fool who shot up the LA Fitness the other day...someone who is depressed and now feeling as though his American pride is the last thing he has and is now fearful that Obama is somehow going to take that away from him. Those are the kinds of people I worry about taking a shot at my President. Deep down I believe thats exactly what some of them want to happen. They can sit in the comforts of their anchor chairs and whatnot, stir the pot, and hope that some nut does follow through with it. Then if it were to happen they could sit back and act as if they had no indirect part in it.

OH and PS...it is of NO surprise to me that most of the people who don't believe Obama was born here in the U.S. are from the damn south. Thats why I will keep my blatino ass right here in Gladwyne, PA. I just send tidbits of info like that to my down south friends from Atlanta or New Orleans who keep insisting I move down there.

I'd like to know how they went about culling the phone list for that "study" about Southerners belief of whether or not Obama is a US citizen. Did they consult the NRA mailing list? laugh.gif

39% of Republicans want more "Birther" coverage.

You know the media, they give the GOP whatever they want.

BTW, in 2004 the "mainstream" media and even some Jewish organizations went loco when two contestants in a MoveOn.org contest--not winners, but contestants--submitted videos suggesting that Bush was like Hitler.

Yesterday the LEADER of the GOP, Rush Limbaugh, the obese drug addict racist radio host, compared not just the President but the Speaker of the House, to Hitler. The media response? /crickets/ The response from Jewish organizations? /crickets/

IOKIYAR, as always.
millerbeach
I heard that comment by that idiot blob of lard and it made me want to vomit. In nearly any other country in the world, if he had said that, he'd be looking for a different line of work...AT VERY LEAST! Comparing our President to Hitler? No, not by a long-shot. He should be called out as a domestic terrorist.

Remember when Rush and his posse constantly called those of us who trashed Bush and his policies as "unAmerican" and "unpatriotic"? Oh the hypocrisy!

A scary christianist indeed. & it's not surprising that one of the members of the church was the same one that showed up @ the recent rally that the prez was @ w/ an AR-15 assault rifle. & he took it to church w/ him. blink.gif unsure.gif

"Look up the word hate. Look up the word abhor, the word loathe. You'll see there are a lot of people that God hates, and so we should hate. But see, I didn't write that, that's in the Bible."

I'm forever puzzled by Christians that seek out hate in the The Old Testament...I thought they were Christians? As a Christian, we should concern ourselves with the teachings of Jesus, provided in the New Testament and the Gospel. There is not a single word of hate uttered by Jesus. Jesus is only about love. I feel so sorry for these truly misguided "Christians". Heaven help their troubled souls.

The Queen Bee of Birferstan was fined $20K. Good that looney & vicious c**t!
