Full Version: Gay Comedians v. Straight Comedians

I've been thinking about this for awhile, but is it just me or is it that straight stand-up comedians tend to be more talented & have much more funnier material. I was trying to think of openly gay comedians that are [still] doin the circuit, so to speak. Ellen & Lily Tomlin aside, the only gay comedians I like are Wanda Sykes & Mario Cantone (altho his high-octane personality can get on my nerves after awhile). I bring up this issue cuz I've watched many comedians on LOGO, for ie, & usually they may get a laugh or 2 from me, but nothing that really makes me think, "I would LOVE to see him/her in person." I thought that perhaps others here have a different opinion about this topic.

I like Alec Mapa, too. His stand-up on Logo was pretty funny.

Alec Mapa performed at our Pride festival in June and was terrific.

Re: straight vs. gay comics: I'll hazard a guess that it's all a matter of ratio. To make the math simple, I'll make two assumptions. First: assume that 1 out of 10 people are gay. So if you have 100 comics, 90 are straight and 10 are gay. Second: let's assume only about 10 percent of all comics are really entertaining. That would mean that out of the 90 straight comics, 9 are great. Of the 10 gay comics, only 1 is great. Thus, it seems like straight comics are better.

Yeah, I have to admit Alec is "up-&-coming". But he still doesn't make me think, "I'll pay $$ to see him."

Good pt! But I have to say that a LARGE majority of straight comics make me laugh w/ gusto, I'd say 90%! The gay ones on the contrary, only a small fraction of them make me do the same, I'd say 10% of them.

Mario Cantone absolutely tanked at the Joan Rivers roast a couple of weeks ago...he was, with the exception of Tom Arnold, the worst of the bunch. And most of the stand-up specials on LOGO are just painful.

Look for Eddie Sarfaty on LOGO. ALso has a new book out called 'Mental'. Good stuff.

Too bad cuz I do think he's funny. His one-man Broadway show turned Showtime Special Laugh Whore is hysterical. & the couple of times I've seen him on The View he was also lots of fun.

I agree, but when we saw him on a couple of our Atlantis Cruises, he was AWFUL!
All he kept talking about was taking it up the butt....
He was not in the least bit funny....Not sure if he was just drunk or what.....I would never go see him again...

I do tend to find the lesbian comics funnier as a group than the gay male ones...

Agreed!

...We could just look @ current successful comedians: Ellen, Lily, Wanda, Rosie v. Mario.

Yeah like all comedians he prolly had an off day. Like George pointed out Mario tanked on the J. Rivers roast so...

I've seen Alec a few times on the tele & I think that part of his comedic problem is that he focuses too much on gay issues. He needs to broaden his material & not just focus on gay themes. Just my take. & I know his whole routine usually centers on a few things: being gay, small, & Filipino. & yes I also know that all comedians have a routine/material that works for them. But usually, they still can venture off that material & be quite funny.

There's an Overrated/Underrated link on the LA Times website. They happened to mention 2 comedians that are "up-&-coming." See what you think...& btw, I'm assuming they're straight.
