This was a good victory for equality, but what wasn't widely known, is that Curt Hanson (the Democrat) also supports putting marriage equality to a public vote. Neither is particularly a friend to our community, but I am hoping that Hanson might realize exactly who helped him win this special election. The best result of all this was that NOM was defeated in their attempt to influence and buy an election in rural Iowa in spite of spending more money then either candidate raised on their own.
The bad guys have to change the makeup of both houses of the Iowa legislature enough to get a ballot measure approved by 51% of the reps. Only when this is done in
two consecutive legislative terms can it be put on the ballot for a public vote. The only way around this is for voters to call for a constitutional convention, which the public has a right, once a decade, to re-write the state constitution. The drawback to this is that ANYthing can be tinkered with and changed. The absolute earliest marriage equality could be taken away is 2011, and that looks unlikely at this point. But never underestimate the power of money combined with desperation.
