I like all kinds of food (except cooked carrots, the smell and texture freak me out) and am fairly adventurous when dining. However, the only ethnic food that I haven't experienced until recently is indian food, even though my partner is of indian ethnicity. When we are not together, he primarily eats indian food.
Over the past year or so, I have been eating healthier. I try to eat vegetarian at least twice a week. Recently, I have been introducing lentils and some indian dishes (names I can't remember; and even if I could wouldn't be able to spell) into my diet.
The spices are magnificent. I had a misconception that everything indian must contain curry. Not so, lots of coriander, tumuric and seeds/spices of all sorts.
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have any favorite indian dishes or restaurants that you care to share.

I love hot & spicy Indian food. Usually go with a group from the office so we order a variety of items and share them all. Cant remember all the names and surely couldnt spell them. Chicken Vindaloo is one of the regular items though.

Yes! I love it all. I have a cookbook and have made many of the dishes. Chicken Tikka, Vindaloo dishes, and I love the lentil/ vegetable dishes as well. I haven't tried anything I didn't love.

Yum.

I love the obvious dish, chickn tikka masala. But everybody does.
My other favourite indian dishes are Baingan Bartha (which is baked eggplant that is blended with spices. DELICIOUS!!! great w/ basmati rice and very healthy.
My other dish is a nan (indian bread) I love peshawari nan which has fruits, cocunut and nuts baked in. Now depending on the restaurant and what region the restaurant owner is from it may also be called kashmiri nan. I've seen it both ways. But I know it as peshawari nan.

It'd be more accurate to ssay that Indian food can contain any number of curries. Curry itself isn't a spice; it's a blend of spices. It can be as few as two or as many as forty spices, and given that the proportions can vary as well, there are literally billions of possible curries. The stuff you get in the groecy store is mostly turmeric, and many people don't like it very much. And they shouldn't. It's frnakly not very good.
If you have access to a good Indian grocery store, you may be able to have the proprieters blend you a curry to your specifications, as hot or as mild as you like. I used to do this regularly when I lived in a city with an Indian community, and there is nothing like a made-to-order curry made with freshly ground spices. Try this once and you will never go back to the stuff off the grocery shelf.

I absolutely love Indian food. If any of you ever find yourself in Vancouver, I strongly recommend going to ViJ's. It is well worth the experience.

The travel agency I work in is on the second floor of a building right in the heart of the gay village on Church Street in Toronto. We used to have a wine making place below us but for the last couple of years there has been an Indian takeout place on the ground floor below us. I love the butter chicken! They heavily promote the place as a health takeout alternative.
