Hey guys, after reading A Gay Athlete's Blog for the past few months, I decided to start my own as well. I am calling it a Gay Coach's Blog. The address is http://www.closetedcoach.blogspot.com/ Check it out and let me know what you think!

I like the concept & it sounds like something that could attract other closeted coaches & athletes. However, I'd hope that down the road people who blog @ your site are ultimately encouraged to live out their lives as true as possible versus encouraging them to stay in the closet forever. Just sayin...

Two things that stood out for me like a sore thumb:

I am a thirtysomething closeted high school basketball.

I believe a noun is missing @ the end. wink.gif

I have dabbled in the gay world for a long time...

Dabbled? blink.gif Ummm, I think I'd try to use some other verb or rewrite the sentence to express what it is you're trying to say. Remember, being gay isn't some sort of part-time hobby like say "I dabble in art." Again, just sayin...

Dabbled is exactly the word that I wanted to use. I have not been a real part of the gay world. I have very few gay friends and rarely go to gay bars. While yes I am gay, I still have not become an active part of the gay world.

So I'm guessing what you're saying is that you occasionally have sex w/ men.

Good luck with the blog.

SC: I think by "dabbled" he means he's like a Christian that only goes to church at Christmas and Easter. wink.gif

Coach: Going to gay bars doesn't make "those people" any more "real" than you. I would say you should talk about your life as a basketball coach. What does that entail? How do you teach and motivate your players? What drills do you do? Talk about your life, but the whole "I'm gay, but I'm not part of the gay community" line is a bit tired. Stay away from that.

Have you seen the documentaries More than a Game (the "LeBron James" movie; it's about his high school team) or The Heart of the Game (about a girls high school basketball coach)? Both are good at capturing the life of high school athletics. The ups and downs. The administration headaches. Dealing with parents, grades, and all sorts of other issues. It would be nice if your blog could capture those things--as well as your issues of being in the closet.
