Is anybody going to see this? Stadium show featuring an orchestra playing music from Star Wars, with a video screen showing clips from the movies. Costumes and props on display at the venues. Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) is the host and narrator. I believe the show has played in London, but starts it's North American tour tonight in Anaheim. I wouldn't mind going. And just think of all the geeks who will be there: full-grown men in costumes, wielding plastic light sabres. Women dressed as Princess Leia, with cinnamon buns on the sides of their head. LA Times article.

Release the inner fanboy...

Not sure if this is related to the Star Wars concert in the LA area, but the Dodgers are having a Star Wars night on Saturday.

Will players be wearing these uniforms?

The concert was a [geeks] hit. tongue.gif

...Actually I love Star Wars.

The fan base was incredible - the age range was from 3 to 93, and everyone had a blast - with many coming wearing thier favorite costumes.

Never saw this one, although I saw the Star Trek one. (Narrated by whoever played Q and whoever played the Holographic doctor - sorry, can't be bothered to hit IMDB. biggrin.gif ) Lots of people in costume there, too.

Hope nobody shelled out extra money to "meet Anthony Daniels", though...

George Lucas likes it. CNN: George Lucas impressed with 'Star Wars in Concert'
QUOTE
George Lucas: I've seen some presentations of, you know, live orchestras with "Star Wars" clips, and that sort of thing. But this is so much more than that -- it's so much more emotional, because what they've done is taken the emotional content of the score ... one is obviously the Imperial March, one is obviously romantic ... and then they've cut all the pictures around that from all the movies, so that you get this really wide range of visuals going with the music, and it really is quite powerful when you see the depictions of all of the various Imperial shenanigans that were going on over the Imperial March.

Pretty cool canmark! I would imagine that this may end up playing once a year here or moving to Las Vegas after its tour. Or perhaps both, especially since Lucas gave his stamp of approval. I really loved the opening scene. smile.gif

...Btw, it's headed your way canmark. Check out the date on the linked site above.

I had noticed that, but thought tickets were not on sale yet. Just checked Ticketmaster and they are on sale. Toronto prices: $83/63/43, plus premium tickets at $350 & $210.

I have been following this thread since the opening. Now I am curious after seeing the youtube links.

I am going to ask around with my friends and find out if it is a touring orchestra (Not very likely, probably just a few core members tour) or do they hire in each city?

One thing I will say. Those poor brass must be exhausted after that concert. Williams makes some interesting music but it can be exhausting to play!!!

I did an all Williams concert a few years back. I was a tired puppy when we were done.

I will be looking out for this.

Thanks for the thread and let me know who else goes and enjoys it.

Best,

Drew

You play brass?
Erstegeiger
No, I am a violinist
SCTrojan
So was my dad. Altho for a mariachi group. He LOVED classical music tho. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for violins, but LOVE the cello! wink.gif

glad to hear!

I like violin too and I am lucky about that, but I should since it's my job

Re: the orchestra

I managed to find out this info from various articles on the Internet:

"The first leg of the tour includes an "all-star" orchestra that has members of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra among others, and the second leg is the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Composer John Williams rearranged the score to match the movie clips and was pivotal in arranging the show in chronological order (rather than starting with "Episode 4: A New Beginning" / aka, the first film)."

- LA shows augmented by musicians from NY/Bos and LA

"Belgian film composer Dirk Brosse conducted the 86-member orchestra and 60-voice choir, working with Williams' original scores and carefully monitoring a small screen in which the scenes had been "streamered" to help keep him in sync with the images being projected. Emmy-winning American composer Mark Watters will take over for most of the remaining shows in October and some in December."

There was a program on PBS tonight about the Making of Star Wars in Concert. It was about the original show produced in London at the O2 arena. I didn't realize it was on and only caught the end of the show.

I'm so excited, anyways. I've ordered by tickets (the cheap seats in the upper level). Still dateless for the event: if Star Wars fan wants to go, let me know. It's Thursday November 26th in Toronto. They haven't been promoting it much, so there's lots of availability.
SCTrojan
Truthfully, I'm disappointed that I didn't go when it played here. I just naively assumed it was gonna be some cheesy concert...Btw, if I lived in Toronto (or near) I'd take you up on your offer. wink.gif

Thought of this thread while reading this.

Went to Star Wars in Concert last night... and am still steamed. Despite all the photos and videos I've found on the Internet for the show, when I arrived at the Air Canada Centre I was told that I couldn't bring in my Nikon DSLR camera.

Me: What?! I bring this camera in to Raptors games all the time.
Security #1: This is different. The promoter says you can only bring in point-and-shoot type cameras.
Me: So what am I supposed to do with my camera?
Security #1: You can take it back to your car or check it at gate 1.

Another security guy comes and escorts me to the bag check desk. I raise a bit of a fuss, saying that I've seen photos and videos of Star Wars in Concert all over the Internet--how is it that I'm being told "no camera."

Security #2: This is the demand of the promoter. And we are able to enforce this because this is private property. I CAN KICK YOU OUT FOR NO REASON AT ALL IF I WANT.

So, I checked my camera. I hung around the desk and noticed some other people being forced to check their camera, but then decided to un-check it and take it back to my car as I didn't want their claim desk to get my camera mixed up with others. I was escorted by a security guard as I left with my camera.

I also asked the guy at the desk "What if I see other people in here with DSLR cameras." They informed me that guards would be roaming around and confiscating the inappropriate cameras. But given the crowds, I don't see how they could monitor this. I was told that if I was found using my camera I could be kicked out.

So, later I was walking around the concourse (there were displays of Star Was costumes, plus some people dressed in costume--stormtroopers, and the like) and I did see one woman using a DSLR camera (like mine), and a man with a video camcorder (don't know if those were prohibited or not).

Can't say I was impressed, since there was no warning that DSLR cameras were not allowed. I do have a point-and-shoot camera, but of course I left it at home and brought my better camera instead.

So after all the pimping I did for the show, talking it up on this board, on Twitter, etc., I came out of it with no pictures (while watching other people snap photos with their point-and-shoot cameras) and a bitter taste in my mouth.

The show itself was OK (I'm not promoting that show anymore), but I refused to buy the $30 programs.

My expression last night was somewhat like Han Solo encased in carbonite (taken with my cell phone camera).
SCTrojan
Wow! That's unfortunate canmark. I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy the show. & yeah, I would have been steaming too, especially after seeing others "violating" the rule. Oy!
