Went to Star Wars in Concert last night... and am still steamed. Despite all the photos and videos I've found on the Internet for the show, when I arrived at the Air Canada Centre I was told that I couldn't bring in my Nikon DSLR camera.
Me: What?! I bring this camera in to Raptors games all the time.
Security #1: This is different. The promoter says you can only bring in point-and-shoot type cameras.
Me: So what am I supposed to do with my camera?
Security #1: You can take it back to your car or check it at gate 1.
Another security guy comes and escorts me to the bag check desk. I raise a bit of a fuss, saying that I've seen photos and videos of Star Wars in Concert all over the Internet--how is it that I'm being told "no camera."
Security #2: This is the demand of the promoter. And we are able to enforce this because this is private property. I CAN KICK YOU OUT FOR NO REASON AT ALL IF I WANT.
So, I checked my camera. I hung around the desk and noticed some other people being forced to check their camera, but then decided to un-check it and take it back to my car as I didn't want their claim desk to get my camera mixed up with others. I was escorted by a security guard as I left with my camera.
I also asked the guy at the desk "What if I see other people in here with DSLR cameras." They informed me that guards would be roaming around and confiscating the inappropriate cameras. But given the crowds, I don't see how they could monitor this. I was told that if I was found using my camera I could be kicked out.
So, later I was walking around the concourse (there were displays of Star Was costumes, plus some people dressed in costume--stormtroopers, and the like) and I did see one woman using a DSLR camera (like mine), and a man with a video camcorder (don't know if those were prohibited or not).
Can't say I was impressed, since there was no warning that DSLR cameras were not allowed. I do have a point-and-shoot camera, but of course I left it at home and brought my better camera instead.
So after all the pimping I did for the show, talking it up on this board, on Twitter, etc., I came out of it with no pictures (while watching other people snap photos with their point-and-shoot cameras) and a bitter taste in my mouth.
The show itself was OK (I'm not promoting that show anymore), but I refused to buy the $30 programs.
My expression last night was somewhat like
Han Solo encased in carbonite (taken with my cell phone camera).
