I'm so dumb. I left my iPod nano (not the current model, but 2 generations ago; it was a 4 GB) in the pocket of my gym shorts and then put them in the wash. Now it's fried (or waterlogged, I suppose).

So, I'll have to buy a new iPod, but I'm wondering which model to get.

iPod nano: I like the small size of the nano, and now it comes with 8 or 16 GB. It has a bigger screen than the old nano and can play video. And it's less than $200.

iPod classic: The classic has 160 GB of storage, which would mean I could store more music and videos (good for watching on the subway to work).

iPod touch: like the iPhone (which I don't have) without the phone. Big screen (good for video). Ability to play games (which I'm not really interested in). wi-fi (for internet access). 8, 32 or 64 GB.

Or should I wait and maybe there'll be something new (or a model upgrade) pre- or post-Christmas?

Recommendations?

Classic if you have a TON of stuff downloaded...
Touch if you like the larger screen...
I'm still waiting for the memory to increase more before I get a Touch...

I have the classic, because I wanted a lot of storage for a lot of music. Watching video on these devices (iPods, phones, whatever) doesn't interest me in the least.

Depending on your tastes/needs. If you like watching lots of video (and you don't mind watching stuff on something other than an HDTV), but you also love music and have tons of music that you want to have on your device, then get the iPod Classic, if only because of the 160GB of storage and it's about $80 more than the 16GB Nano (at least, here in Canada).

Re: waiting for upgrades, I might be wrong, but weren't all of the iPod models upgraded just recently? It might take a while until Apple brings out new models again.

Still thinking. Having had a (generation two) nano, I do like the look (and small size) of that model and the new nano does seem to have some new features (FM radio; video camera) for pretty much the same price as the previous generation.

I honestly don't have a ton of music to put on the device, although my 4 GB nano was getting close to full (and certainly I had more CD's that I could have transferred).

While I've never watched video on a mobile device, I did notice somebody watching Grey's Anatomy on the subway one day and thought it would be cool to catch up on movies and TV shows. My subway ride to work is over 30 min. each way, so that's an hour a day I could be doing something. But video would mean needing a higher capacity device. Hmm... decisions...

I just thought of this today: you can go to an Apple store and try all the models and see which one you like best. The one at the Eaton Centre has samplers for the general public to test them.

I got the 160 classic, mainly because I have a TON of music and didn't want to have to start sorting through my collection and decide which songs were "worthy". I don't watch video on it - never have - so it was the obvious choice for me.

You say you don't have an iPhone... can you get one of those, or are you locked into a cell contract on a different carrier. The most recent iPhone has 32 GB on the top model, way more than you are used to (there's also a 16 GB version). I like it because I can combine several things on one device. I have a phone, iPod, basic camera, and web browser/email access all in one. Plus apps for a myriad of things. Much better than carrying and keeping track of 2 or more devices.

canmark, this may also help w/ your decision.

I checked out the nano today and I quite like it. I just wish it had more the 8/16 GB. I looked at the classic, too, but the only thing that it seems to have going for it is the 160 GB of memory. I suspect the iPhone is too much phone for me (I seldom use my cell phone), and I would have to switch from Telus to Rogers (the only company offering the iPhone in Canada).

However... just now I see an article in the Toronto Star: Bell, Telus launch network that supports iPhone

QUOTE
Bell Canada said today it has officially launched a sophisticated new wireless telecommunications network that would support Apple Inc.'s ground-breaking smart phone.

Bell and Telus Corp. will share the wireless network, known high-speed packet access, or HSPA for short.

Until now, Rogers Communications Inc., the country's largest cellphone company, has had a monopoly on that standard.

Neither Bell nor Telus would comment on media reports that they are poised to announce a deal to add iPhones to their lineups.

But a spokesperson for Bell did confirm that the technology upgrade would make it possible to carry the iPhone.

So that's a new wrinkle. Should I consider the iPhone?

Hmmm... right now I'm leaning towards an orange nano, but I'm going to hold off actually purchasing for now.

Just read this article so yeah you might want to hold off & see what features/memory that the Verizon/Google's androids come w/.

Btw, I think that this "free" application is pretty cool! smile.gif

Oh, now that app looks like fun. I'm downloading it now. We'll see how long it takes me to figure it out. smile.gif

Well, I ended up getting the 16 GB iPod nano. I considered the 64 GB iPod touch, but at $400 it was just too expensive. I had had almost 4 GB of music on my old iPod nano, and I now plan to add a bunch more music. However, I'd also like to add some movies and/or TV shows, but have discovered that they eat up a lot of memory. The Star Trek DVD came with a free iPod version so I added that. It takes up 1.83 GB of memory! At that rate, one can't add too many movies. I'm hoping in the future the Touch will come down in price and go up in memory space, and then I may upgrade to that.
