As journalism has veered more toward shouting heads than neutral reporting lots of sports personalities have found homes outside the world of sport. Though this is still dominated by the right, in my opinion, some notable exceptions have leveled the playing field a bit.
One of the most notable regressives is Rush Limbaugh who was forced out of sports commentating due to comments perceived by many as unfairly racially tinged. His attempt to buy the Rams has generated a rare entrance in to politics by current players in what one might term a matter of self-preservation.
Limbaugh may not be the first owner to have made questionable comments, nor the most controversial.
But oraganized team sports - and the NFL in particular - have always resembled a very high-priced slave market because of the control that the managing organizations have over the political activites and other public behavior of their players. But there is no "I" in team and the owner must be the ultimate team player.
I wonder if this issue will be a watershed.
Could this be a case of the "slaves" deciding that they want to have a say about who qualifies as their owner?
