Go, go, La La Land teams!

Dear Joe Torre -- here are Ryan Howard's splits this year (BA/OBP/SLUG):

RHP: .320/.395/.693

LHP: .207/.298/.356

You could also root for the Yankees and Dodgers like the moron from the NY Times who says baseball needs it to "recover a portion of the trust, if not the innocence, that it has lost in the steroid era." Yep, nothing restores trust like admitted cheater Alex Rodriguez and lying cheater Manny "women's fertility drug" Ramirez. rolleyes.gif

A sordid group here but I guess I'll root for the Phillies and the Angels, with the Angels winning the World Series.
George Twins fan
I don't really like any of these teams. But I really would like to see the Angels beat the Yanks if for no other reason than so I don't have to be inundated with the NY sports media collectively licking the Yankees taints for two extra weeks.
SCTrojan
Guess which teams I'll be rooting for? tongue.gif
Bill W
JIP, I actually posted that Bill Rhoden column from the Times on another board for its incredible stupidity, so you see, we can agree sometimes.

Yankees and Phillies. Duh! laugh.gif

I'm hoping for a freeway series myself actually....
SCTrojan
ROTF! laugh.gif

Actually, this city would LOVE a fwy series but I'm not holding my breath.

Isn't traffic already bad enough on the I-5 without a freeway series? unsure.gif
SCTrojan
Yep! You're right. The traffic on the I-5 is much slower than flying to the East Coast on a plane. blink.gif tongue.gif

& I'm being honest.

Let me amend this to say anyone but the Dodgers.
Joe in Philly
You mean you don't want to root for the Official Baseball Team of TBS???
Bill W
Utterly baffling failure to pull Kershaw, and then Sherrill, in time by Torre gave Game 1 to the Phils.

It will take smoke and mirrors for either of these teams to beat the AL winner.
MetsfanChi
Anyone but Philly and the Yankees!

biggrin.gif
Bill W
...Though admittedly, JIP's contorting of his writing to "objectively" pick the Phillies would be worth a snort.
Joe in Philly
I don't recall the fine print in the contract saying I'm supposed to be objective.

Angels FINALLY capitalize after some egregious mistakes -- Abreu's brainless overrun of second base today -- to take Game 3.

How long before Tim McCarver claims Jeter created the f***ing universe?

A little league shortstop would have had enough time to stop turn around and throw the ball to second base to nail a stupid abreu....i don't see how that turns into "an extraordinary play by a world class shortstop". If anything, give all the praise to texeira...most first baseman wouldnt have been slick enough to be covering the bag on that play...jeter didn't do anything special on that play except be a cutoff man and throw the ball to the bag on a play where a guy was out by 10 feet....

mccarver is a moron

All I can say is that when it counts the Dodgers sux the BIG ONE!
mets57
obviously i'm rooting for the dodgers, but it's great to see their fans suffer. smile.gif

very impressive win by the phillies. phillies fans should enjoy this team. they got it. and if it goes down to phils-yanks in the WS, i'm going NL all the way!

Am I gonna have to shank you next time I'm in NY?
SCTrojan
If I can be as objective as possible the Yanks look unbeatable. If the Angels stumble, which I'm sure they will, the Yanks are the team to beat.

You really are a masochist. I can't figure out who you're rooting for.
mets57
mets aren't in the playoffs so i have no REAL rooting interests. if the dodgers win, fine. if not, i don't feel bad for their fans. in fact, i feel great for their sufferings. smile.gif i just don't wanna see a yankee parade at the canyon of heroes (though it may be inevitable).

I wouldn't say "unbeatable" but they're certainly the best of the AL.

Meanwhile, seeing a clip of a Jimmy Rollins post-game interview last night reminded me of someone. laugh.gif
SCTrojan
You're right Joe. It should be "unbeatable". Anything can happen.

...That's what I hate 'bout sports. The outcome is not very scientific nor mathematical. Oy!

I don't know how many times I've had heart attacks, practically sending me to the hospital, when the Trojans lose & they shouldn't have. But I guess that comes w/ being a sports fan. You live & die for the team you love...

Ok, I'm giving up sports. tongue.gif

...NOT!
Bill W
Why do these umpires have jobs? I can't remember such consistent incompetence in an October.
Bill W
Some great bulletpoints from Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus on what we learned (nothing new) last night:

QUOTE
•CC Sabathia is a very good pitcher.

•Alex Rodriguez is a very good baseball player.

•Playing baseball well in the postseason is not a skill above and beyond playing baseball well.

•At heart, the Angels are hackers.

•Smallball is dumb.

•Humans are no longer the best technology for the practice we know as "umpiring."

MetsfanChi
I'll agree with all of those except the smallball comment. If you have a dominant pitcher i.e Lincecum/Santana/Halladay/Sabathia on piss-poof offensive team, smallball works.

The Angels have used smallball for years, albeit only average success. Yes, they've won a bunch of division titles, but only 1 WS ring. The problem is that they play in the AL, where its mash-mash-mash and nearly takes away from the game of baseball.

You put the Angels in the NL and they'd be competitive yearly.
mets57
the angels are competitive yearly. actually, put any AL team in the NL and it'll be competitive.

small ball is stupid. giving up outs for the sake of moving runners over is stupid (except in rare occasions), like what the mets did this year routinely. extra-base hit power is probably the most important tool of a player.
mdterp01
Safely out of the 8th....phew!! GO PHILS!!!
Joe in Philly
Never a doubt!!!!!!
mdphl
Thank God they fired Charlie Manuel a couple of years ago!

phillyrunner
Now the Phillies get to wait a week before playing again. If the Yankees sew up game 5 it will be too long for my liking to get the W.S. started. Too bad the start can't be moved up if both teams are ready.
CycloneMatt
Yay! The Dodgers are done! Not that I'm a Phillies fan by any stretch, but I know I won't be wanting the Yankees to win the Series (assuming the Angels don't win out - HAHAHAHAHA! no, seriously). Go Philadelphia!!
SCTrojan
The bf & I knew it!!!! What a STOOPID ASS pitching decision. Ugh! mad.gif
mdterp01
Angels shake off the 6 run inning and come through by 1. Phew...good game. Back to NY.
mets57
mike sciosa is a dumbass. fortunately, girardi is dumber.

best manager my ass.
George Twins fan
Question...why would Girardi put a pinch runner in for ARod in the top of the ninth after he'd been intentionally walked? If the Yanks had tied the game, the Yanks would have t finish the game without ARod. Didn't seem to make much sense to me. Having someone run for Matsui made sense but why would want to continue playing with your hottest bat and one of the best third basemen on defense?
SCTrojan
Yeah some of the coaching decisions (& officiating) throughout both the NLCS & ALCS have been bloody awful! mad.gif

I wondered that myself. It's not like A-Rod runs like, say, Pat Burrell. And on the other side, removing Lackey was surprising. I'm a little amazed the Angels came back after that inning. That seemed like the final nail in the coffin.

If the Angels win tomorrow and push it to a 7th game, that would be huge for the Phils because the Yankees would have to go with CC Sabathia for game 7, meaning he wouldn't be able to get 3 starts in the World Series; the earliest he could pitch is game 3 on normal rest or game 2 on 3 days' rest.
mdterp01
Wow...a Yankees/Phillies world series. From Philly but this will be my husband's (ARod's) first world series and I would really like to see him win it. NY certainly the better looking of the two teams with all those hot papis for sure though. May the best team win.
BigBlueCowboy
Congrats to all my friends in the City of Brotherly Love!!

Unfortunately, you will be doing battle with the Evil Empire!!! ohmy.gif

Can Cliff Lee be a Luke Skywalker? Or will CC Sabathia do the bidding of the emperor, Steinbrenner!!! unsure.gif

Tune in Wednesday!!!
