So poor Greg Oden did not realize that anything electronic lives forever.
Held an apology press conference yesterday in PTown, said he had been irresponsible, would not name the woman involved, explained he was barely 20 at the time and then added the gaffe of the week,

QUOTE(LarryC @ Jan 25 2010, 12:07 PM)

Although they are "ahead" of the Sixers' pace, I don't think they'll break it.
To compare with the Nets' situation I was looking at the game-by-game for the 76ers' 9-73 season in 1972-73. Although I was 10, I only started following the Phillies in the summer of '72 and didn't follow anything else until the Flyers' playoff run in the spring of '73, so I was blissfully unaware of the Sixers' plight.
The Nets are at 4-43 right now, dead even with that Sixers team right now (they were slightly behind -- or ahead -- when they were 3-40). The 76ers lost their first 15, won, lost 6, won, lost 3, won. At that point they were 3-24. They lost 14 in a row to fall to 3-38 before winning another game. After that, they lost 20 in a row to drop from 4-38 to 4-58. Hard to believe, but after that the Sixers won 5 out of 7 games to "improve" to 9-60, before losing their final 13 games. That's four separate losing streaks of at least 13 games!
So, yeah, the Nets really have their work cut out for them if they want to lose 73 or more.

So the Clippers (finally!) get rid of Dunleavy as coach, and Fox is already reporting that Isiah Thomas

Mavs acquire Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson from Wizards for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton.
Meanwhile, Cavs are supposedly offering J.J. Hickson and Zydrunas Ilgauskas for Amare Stoudemire.

Bring on the salary dumps!
Actually, since Cuban is willing to spend unlimited money and everyone else is trying to save money, I'm surprised he couldn't do any better than that. Given that Josh Howard seems to have succumbed to reefer madness, Dallas definitely got the better players in the deal, but it's not that much of an upgrade.
The Clippers are supposedly donating Marcus Camby to Portland (after swearing all season long they weren't shopping him). From the perspective of a Lakers' fan, I guess that's better than donating him to Denver.

Edit: With Richard Jefferson now in the mix
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/bask...tml?eref=sircrcand Ferry/Brown's connections to San Antonio....look out!
So the CAVS are poised to do big things in the next day or so...hopefully. I'm ranking my personal pros and cons:
1. Antawn Jamison - versatile, quick, appears to me that he could flow easily into the Cavs system, but is a scorer who can create his own shot with jumpers or cutting to the basket and he's cute
2. Troy Murphy - the underrated gem in this scenario; white ballers get a bad rap in the NBA with duds like every Duke player for the last 17 years not making an impact, but I like Troy's flow he has ice in his veins, the only downside is J.J.'s upside if he's the piece instead of Wally's contract
3. Corey Maggette - I've always loved his game and think he's awesome, he may have lost a step, but he's still a gamer and imagining him running the floor with Lebron is wicked
4. Amar'e Stoudemire - He doesn't defend and didn't know how to play with Shaq in Phoenix, so what now?
I think the CAVS might win it all this year. And I'm saying that before the trade. They just have a different attitude. Remember last year they got flack for the not beating the teams with the best records and those in the West? Check out this year's numbers, it's not the same CAVS team just breezing through the regular season. We can play big, we can play quick, we stifle on defense, and we have a closer in LBJ. Fingers crossed. Go CAVS!

I think right now Cleveland has to be the odds on favorite, even without a trade. I think they're a little better this season but, more importantly, everyone else is worse, particularly in the East. The Lakers haven't fully hit their stride yet, but with their bench they have a big hill ahead of them.
That said, as a Lakers fan, I hope you do pick up Corey Maggette. He has two notable traits, everywhere he goes: (i) he scores a lot of points and (ii) he loses. He's a ball hog, cares only about his own stats (except assists) and plays no defense, even though he's very capable of doing it. Shaq will love him!
Seriously, I'd be shocked if the Cavs end up trading for him. Any of the other players on your list would make far more sense.
P.S. -- just to point out the level of despair among Cleveland's alleged rivals in the East, word has it that the Celtics have just traded for Nate Robinson. If they thought trying out Marbury last year was a trip, just wait for this.

Feb 17 2010, 09:33 PM
They're saying that the Cavs will pick up Antawn Jamison in a 3-way deal. Bulls to send John Salmons to Bucks. Nate Robinson to go to Celtics for Eddie House. Deals are going fast and furious.

Feb 18 2010, 01:05 PM
So is there going to be a chorus of outrage about this like when Memphis donated Pau Gasol to the Lakers? Unlike the Lakers, who gave up a future all star in the deal, the Cavs gave up absolutely nothing. NOTHING. Ilgauskas will get bought out and then return to the Cavs. Such a scam.
And wtf are the Clippers doing facilitating this? They really wanted Drew Gooden? Or is Dunleavy just bitter at the world, so he did this for spite?

Not to say that Cleveland doesn't deserve this. You go LeBron!

http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/multimedia/live_stream.html Meanwhile, to your point about the Laker tampering case, Larry. The major difference is that JERRY WEST is a Laker forever and pulled off the Gasol deal. Just like KEVIN MCHALE is always going to be a Celtic so the KG deal also reeked. The Wiz hate the Cavs, this was about business. Nothing personal here. Go Cavs!

Knicks
land Tracy McGrady in multi-player deal with the Rockets and Kings. Rockets get Kevin Martin, future Knick picks and various scrubs. The Kings get sixth man Carl Landry and scrubs. The deal clears up plenty of cap space for the Knicks, but with the make up of next season's team so uncertain (the majority of the team won't be back), will they be able to get the two--never mind one--superstars they hope to land?

Tracy McGrady scores 26 points (on 10-17 shooting) in his Knicks debut, but the Knicks still lose in OT to the Thunder.
In his Rockets debut, Kevin Martin went 3-16 for 14 points in a Houston loss to Indiana.
In his Kings debut, Carl Landry went 3-10 for 8 points in a loss to the Clippers.

God, that first one was gross. That's as far as I'm looking.
As for basketball, McGrady follows up his great debut in a Knicks loss with a lousy game in a Knicks loss. I suspect that will continue to be his pattern, at least until he's injured again and out for the rest of the season.
Cleveland loses 3 in a row after picking up Jamison. The Wizards go 3 -1 after giving away their entire team for nothing. Somehow, I don't think these trends are going to continue.

Is that a serious question? If he signs with the Mavs, the mountains will fall into the sea and basketball rims the whole world over will change into gold.
So, in my favorite news, Memphis sends Thabeet -- the #2 overall pick -- to the D league! If Smokey were still here, I could gloat about how I told him Thabeet was going to be a bust (another great example of picking "big" at all costs). The funny part is that the Grizzlies are doing just fine this year anyway. Imagine if they had taken Tyreke Evans instead -- they'd be the terror of the West.

Allen Iverson is in trouble, folks, deep trouble. The combination of alcohol and gambling - and a once-promising career in tatters because of the first two - won't culminate in anything short of disaster if help does not arrive in short order.

Mar 9 2010, 11:24 AM
Lethargy is the Lakers' specialty around this time of the season.
Dallas is looking pretty good, but I think the organization was finished the day they choked away game 3 against the Heat (in 2005[?], the year they booted the championship when they were on the verge of taking a 3 - 0 lead). Just like how the Trailblazers never recovered from losing a 15 point lead in game 7 against the Lakers in the conference finals of 2000(?). It doesn't matter that these teams have different personnel -- there's something about choking that becomes part of an organization's collective unconscious.
I think Denver is tougher than Dallas, and will be a bigger challenge to the Lakers.

The Nets have won 3 out of their last 4 to get to the magic 10-win mark and avoid the record books. The 1972-73 76ers stand alone with the worst record in NBA history. The 2009-10 Nets? Just another lousy team.

See, I told you they would do it! Actually, it came closer to the wire than I expected, but it was the classic kind of late season garbage win I was counting on: Parker is injured, the Spurs rested Ginobli and Duncan is resting himself until the playoffs, it seems.

Portland, minus the once again newly injured Brandon Roy (the Blazers just cannot get a break!), somehow managed to beat OKC tonight, meaning that the Lakers will have to face the Thunder in the first round. Given how screwed up the Lakers are right now, I think OKC has at least a 50% chance of an upset.
The West is totally up for grabs, and the great drama this year holds is who will win the conference. The East and the Finals, on the other hand, hold no interest at all, since Cleveland will win both, absent a freak injury to LBJ.
