Why don't shifts work?
Joe in Philly
I think the shift can work if a batter deliberately tries to beat it. Sure, sometimes he might get a hit the opposite way, but worrying about guiding the ball that way I think would result in fewer line drives, and in the case of a home run hitter, what better way to not get a home run than not hitting the ball as hard? I'd rather a batter just concentrate on hitting the ball hard, making solid contact and letting the ball go wherever it goes, and I think most hitters who have the shift employed against them do just that.

I really think Manuel should drop Howard in the order vs lefties, maybe to 6th. Put Werth behind Utley.

I love it, more than anything, that many sports teams use Queen as a way to express victory! You go Freddie!

Congratulations to the New York Yankees on their World Series victory. Very well deserved. Congrats to ARod on winning his first championship. Great season for the Phillies. No one expected them to win last year and not many expected they'd be in position to repeat. Wish it would've gone 7 but the Yanks were just too good.

Congrats to the Yanks. Although the Phillies didn't repeat they had a great season and should be back next year with a little luck.

Very gratifying result, and especially nice for a valiant soldier like Matsui. But the Yankees need a new world championship cap designer; they are out of practice.

I'm soooooo proud of Matsui! He's so humble & cute! He deserves every accolades! smile.gif

I imagine the Yankees will be smart and let Matsui walk. Watch the Mets snap him up for his decline.

Oh well, silver linings: The Phils lost! and more people now know Utley is the best Phillie, no matter how many bullsh*t strikes they call on him.

Bloomberg on Tuesday, Yankees last night; I wonder what nine-figure purchase will be completed today in NYC?

Rob Neyer of espn.com:

Goat: Charlie Manuel never did figure out his bullpen. Not during the regular season, and not during the postseason. When Pedro Martinez left Game 6 after the fourth inning, the Phillies were down but not out. Three quick runs later, and their chances of winning had dropped below 5 percent. (Also, a number of Manuel's hitters didn't do much hitting in this Series, including -- but not limited to -- Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Pedro Feliz.

Costly Move: During the regular season, J.A. Happ went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA. Somehow, Manuel was able to get Happ only two and one-third innings of work, all in relief, during the World Series.

Best screed I've read on the NYY payroll:

pretty much sums up how I felt.
