I just ordered this today and can't wait to get my hands on this bio. I should think it will be a fascinating read and hard to put down, based on his life thus far. The only other pop star that has had an equally huge impact on me personally would be Madonna, so when I heard about this book I jumped! laugh.gif

Hmmmm! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE him! I'll have to buy it too! smile.gif

I know that there's a new Bowie biography out now by author Mark Spitz because I read the review in the paper the other day and I saw it in the bookstore yesterday. Could you provide a link for the autobiography? I am very interested, to say the least. I thought a Bowie autobiography would be more publicized. I just went to Amazon and I couldn't find anything recent except for the aforementioned (Spitz) book. I also went to Bowie's official website and I didn't see it there, either. Thanks in advance!

I just had a "shudder" moment: So maybe now we'll find out if Bowie & Mick Jagger did, indeed, have a sexual encounter/relationship. ohmy.gif tongue.gif blink.gif

Just picked up the book. I can tell this is going to be a GREAT, interesting read. The Author is a Mark Spitz ( no, not the swimmer!) . I understand he wrote a great book on the Beatles. A huge Bowie fan too. If I stumble across anything mind blowing, I will post it....on to the read! laugh.gif

I just re-read my post and I guess I misread the title of this thread. I could've sworn it said "autobiography" and not biography (unless the title was modified).

But, yeah, keep us posted on the book!

So I've been watching the Ziggy Stardust concert from 1973 in London on Palladia. My sis is also a BIG Bowie fan. At any rate, she knows her music history like any music scholar imaginable. So she told me that Luther Vandross did backing vocals for Bowie @ one pt in his life. Wow! I never knew that. Pretty cool actually! smile.gif

You didn't?? Yes, I believe he first joined Bowie for the Young American album, did more too I think. I am well into the book and its incredibly detailed and the author went to great lengths to get to as many people as possible who spent ANY time with Bowie. I knew he was at least bi, and its confirmed. Many times over so far. From what I have read so far he REALLY got around. ohmy.gif More soon.

"Young Americans" live on TV with Vandross singing in the background.

He also wrote the track "Fascination" with Bowie.

The other things that have come up in his early life/career was that he loved America, and he loved American football, which was unusual to say the least for a young Brit. He was obivously hugely swayed by American rock and roll and then blues and the Detroit/Motown sound......which of course you can hear on "Young Americans" one of my all time favorite Bowie albums.

Thanks guys for sharing the info/videos. Cool!...

I have this dvd collection a must if you guys don't have it. Certainly one of my favorites in my collection. Actually, it also has a deep & special meaning for me. Right b4 my nephew died, from a freak car accident, he gave it to me. He was working for EMI @ the time so he had access to tons of music. I got lots of stuff from him actually. sad.gif

...On a lighter note, some of my all time faves by him (in no specific order):

Space Oddity

Ashes to Ashes

Heroes

Scary Monster (And super creeps)

Rebel Rebel

Suffragette City

China Girl

Life On Mars

Ziggy Stardust

Fashion

I feel LIKE such a Valley ditz! I'm now watching the same video on the dvd I mentioned above. I knew I had seen it b4 but hadn't pd attn. But then again I often don't pay attn to backup singers unless they're hawt. ohmy.gif

...So I'm guessing that he's in NYC's gay village in this vid:

Hard to believe but I am within about 100 pages or less of the end. As I thought/hoped it would be the book is so hard to put down. The Author is just incredibly detailed and there is alot that I never knew about Bowie which has now been allowed to come out and there is alot that I already knew. I can't say I have come across anything ground shaking but there have been some close calls. Angie Bowie still says she caught Bowie in bed with Mick Jagger once.Of great interest to me has been the relationships he has had over the years, the men and women. Its funny but Bowie still to this day is all over the map about his alleged gayness or bisexuality. He wil make comments where he is clearly putting it out there he has experimented, then seems to take it all back. His favorite comment: "keep em guessing." I guess. smile.gif The behind the stage comments about tours, album reviews and friendships/relationships is just incredible. There is also much mention of the Bowie effect especially back in the 70'-80's and the sheer number of bands which came into being because of Bowie. I was taken aback by how Gary Numan felt that Bowie had snubbed him terribly years ago, when all he wanted to do was to meet his "God". There is some bogging down of minutia IMO related to his relationship with Angie, but otherwise, I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who has been touched by this genius the way I have. laugh.gif

IMHO, I think that Bowie had a greater influence on punk, new wave, & alternative rock music than The Ramones, which is often considered the 1st punk band.

...I don't know if the book mentions it but Boy George has often said that Bowie was his 1st & foremost music inspiration. He has talked about when he was 11 or 12 sneaking out of his house @ night to go to Bowie's concerts.

Thanks for sharing Tom. I'll buy it soon.
