President Obama and Michelle Obama are hosting their first state dinner tonight for the prime minister of India.

Marcus Samuelsson, chef of New York's Aquavit, is the guest chef. Jennifer Hudson will perform. The guest list combines leaders from business, politics and entertainment.
QUOTE
(The) guest list included the actors Alfre Woodard and Blair Underwood, the directors Steven Spielberg and M. Night Shyamalan, the writer Jhumpa Lahiri, former secretary of state Colin Powell, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, a Republican, and Indra Nooyi, the chief executive of Pepsico.

The dinner is being streamed live on the White House website: http://www.whitehouse.gov/live. CNN is also covering it live.

Michelle is looking gorgeous (as always) in dress by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan.

You beat me to it canmark. And as usual you do a much better job at this sort of socio-politico drama. One thing that struck me is that two men of color are now leading the two most populous bastions of capitalist democracy in the world. Whether either will be able to make their system work for their people is not clear.

But the body language between the man whose moral self-critic Martin Luther King was a disciple of the moral self-critic of the other Mahatma Ghandi, is a striking indicator of the type of attitude it will require.

Their wives are their moral compasses

India's is an ancient culture which is the first known to have employed usury: A culture that can make a lot of money while producing nothing, or makes a productive sustainable society, and economy, that benefits all.

forgive the cheapening of the thread, but let's talk about 60-something David Geffen, and his 20-something boyfriend seated at head table!!

Hmmm... had to look that one up. Indeed, 66 year old Geffen was sitting right next to the first lady according to one source. The Washington Post lists Jeremy Lingvall as Geffen's "boyfriend" and Geffen as "the Hollywood titan" and has them sitting at the President's table. Also at the head table: John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi and the CEO of Pepsi, Indra Nooyi.

Wait... found a classier source: Gawker. rolleyes.gif

It's well known that movie mogul David Geffen is Obama's Gay Friend. This was reinforced by tonight's state dinner, where Geffen sat at Obama's table. Oh, and Geffen's plus one was there, too: His hunky, 26-year-old boyfriend.

Here's a photo of the two of them (screen shot from C-Span).

My reference is to an article I found while doing research for a thread on Sustainability. The History of Usury and Prohibition is well worth reading for anyone concerned about our current economic problems.

You hit it spot on sil. When I was pursuing my bachelor's in Religious Studies a common theme that came up, regardless of the religious tradition, was the idea of usuary & its implications on society. I did like the quote from the 2nd link you posted:

QUOTE
Usury - lending at interest or excessive interest - has, according to known records, been practiced in various parts of the world for at least four thousand years. During this time, there is substantial evidence of intense criticisism by various traditions, institutions and social reformers on moral, ethical, religious and legal grounds. The rationale employed by these wide-ranging critics have included arguments about work ethic, social justice, economic instability, ecological destruction and inter-generational equity. While the contemporary relevance of these largely historical debates are not analysed in detail, the authors contend that their significance is greater than ever before in the context of the modern interest-based global economy.

...I always wondered about the far-right Christianists constant preaching (or yelling) about immoral behavior in society, but yet many if not most of them support usuary as "true" capitalists. rolleyes.gif Bet they'd be surprised @ what their holy scriptures say about this practice & its immoral implications, especially on the poor & downtrodden.

...Back to topic. Loved this photo gallery of the state dinner. smile.gif

Question: is it me or does it seem that the Prez & Geffen's beau are looking longingly @ each other? ohmy.gif tongue.gif

True party crashers @ the WH state dinner. Pretty brave if you ask me, especially since it appears that someone slipped them in.

The party crashers were being filmed as possible subjects for a reality show. Like the Heene family (balloon boy), it seems like everybody wants to be a reality TV star.

And what's with the secret service? If they can't keep party crashers out of a state dinner for a foreign head of state, how are they supposed to be protecting the president from evildoers (domestic and foreign)? All the terrorists need to do is disguise themselves as a well-dressed white couple and bingo--instant access.
JC
I suspect you would also need to know people at the dinner to pull it off--it seems that the Salahi's are pretty well-connected in Washington. According to wikipedia, their wedding guests included Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, Sen. Mark Warner, and former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Margaret Heckler.

If some attendees wandered over and said hello while they were talking to security, it's a little easier to see how this could happen, but it still doesn't excuse a potentially dangerous security breach. Who knows what other connections they might have. Bin Laden's rather well-connected, too.

Yeah & like a bunch of buffoons they posted all kinds of stuff on their Facebook site. "Um H.E.L.L.O!!! You were party crashers. Couldn't you have been a lil more discreet about your uncouth behavior."

There is a simple solution to much of the gambling speculation in financial markets: legalize and tax it. But as the idiotic responses to the author indicate, the opponents are not only well-financed and well-connected, they are also tech-savvy enough to enforce their poisonous policies anonamously through mass-bombing any effort that suggests taxing them. [That much of this financial game-playing is illegal is my supposition not the author's. Law would not allow him to speculate on this through his column without hard evidence, revealing yet another tool favoring corrupt financiers.]

I'd say Mr. Geffen's boyfriend is well aware of the power of his looks and animal magnetizism and has it constantly on overdrive. Mr. Obama is constantly aware of his own animal magnetism and also keeps it well-honed for political purposes. Neither should be mistaken for sexual interest in the other - at least not on Obama's part. His sexual interests would probably lean in the direction of someone more like Michelle even if he were gay. Mr. Lingvall would likely be interested in someone with better financial prospects than Obama even if he were straight. As far as the security at the White House, I doubt seriously that it was ever really threatened. What this letdown does suggest is from where a security risk is likely to come. I've been suggesting for years now that the greatest danger to this country is the disparity between rich and poor. Once there are sufficient people of an unsuspected demographic who consider themselves to have been unfairly treated, the likelihood of one of them becoming a "terrorist" increases. It is a matter of statistics, and our economic decline is producing a more culturally diverse group of US discontents who are well-armed.

Huffingtonpost.com has pics of the party crashers with Joe Biden, Rahm Emanuel, the Indian ambassador to the U.S., Good Morning America's Robin Roberts. Did they actually sit at one of the tables and eat dinner (since they weren't invited there shouldn't have been a place for them) or did they just mingle and get themselves photographed (to be used in the reality TV show, one presumes)?
QUOTE
UPDATE: According to a CNN source inside the White House, the couple that crashed the first Obama administration state dinner DID in fact meet the president despite earlier reports that Tareq and Michaele Salahi never came in contact with the president.

AP- Tareq and Michaele Salahi, the couple who crashed the White House state dinner, may face criminal charges, the Secret Service announced today.

The head of the Secret Service said today that his agency failed to verify whether the couple was invited to the party and expressed his deep concern and embarrassment. Director Mark Sullivan went on to say that measures have been taken to ensure this will not happen again

Jim Mackin, the agency's spokesman, said this is one reason the Secret Service has kept mum about what happened when the couple, who are auditioning for the Bravo reality show "The Real Housewives of DC", arrived at the security checkpoint Tuesday. They were not on the guest list for the dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but managing to get into the party, where they posed for photos with Vice President Joe Biden and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Edit to add: NY Times article has pic of party crasher shaking hands with the president.
QUOTE
Representative Peter T. King of New York, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, called for a Congressional investigation, saying in an interview Thursday that he was shocked at the lack of security at the White House on Tuesday night.
* * *
Mr. King said he had seen people turned away from similar White House events, including a congressman who brought his daughter instead of his wife, whose name was on the list. He also raised concerns about the Secret Service’s assertion that Mr. Obama was safe because all guests passed through metal detectors.

“The fact they went through the magnometer is incidental,” he said. “They could have had anthrax on them. They could have grabbed a knife from the dining room table.”
* * *
Not two hours after the party, Mrs. Salahi had on her Facebook page a dozen photos of her and her husband with Washington’s social elite.

Whether or not they wind up on “Housewives,” the couple have certainly acted as if they were stars. They are now scheduled to be on “Larry King Live” on Monday.
canmark
Now it seems the party crashers have dumped Larry King and are offering their first TV interview to the highest bidder. The more info about them that comes out, the more it sounds like they're a couple of con artists.

QUOTE
Television industry executives said on Saturday that Michaele and Tareq Salahi had postponed plans for an interview Monday on CNN’s “Larry King Live” and were seeking top-dollar bids for their first television interview.

For years, the Salahis have publicized their own flashy adventures in the social and sporting scenes of Washington and its outlying horse country, and left behind a record of lawsuits and unpaid bills, many from the bankruptcy of the family vineyard after extended litigation between Mr. Salahi and his parents.
* * *
As questions continued to swirl about the pair’s most remarkable appearance to date, a television network executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the network does not publicly comment on payments, said the couple’s asking price for an interview was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. “They are asking for best offers from all the networks,” the executive said. Programs quietly pay steep fees for photographs and videos to secure interviews in some cases.
* * *
The Salahis were not national celebrities but they assiduously cultivated an image as well-connected Washington socialites.
* * *
... the Salahis moved through Washington’s social elite with a sense of privilege even though their business had been in bankruptcy and they left some personal bills unpaid.

For her wedding, Mrs. Salahi ran up a tab of thousands of dollars having her hair and makeup done at the Erwin Gomez Salon, an exclusive establishment in Georgetown that says it helped prepare members of the Obama family on Inauguration Day.

But James Packard-Gomez, the salon’s creative director, said in an interview on Saturday that even though Mrs. Salahi had never paid her bill, she continued to book appointments and the salon continued to serve her.

Their arrogance will be their downfall! I can't see the govt not prosecuting them now.

They're trying to get on that Real Housewives trainwreck which is adding a new Washington DC show. I really hope Bravo doesn't fall for this stunt and give them a spot on the show. And I hope no news agency will offer them a penny for their "story".
canmark
Washington Post story digs up some facts about their past. I'm reminded of that Leo DiCaprio movie Catch Me If You Can. For example, the wife claims to have been a former Washington Redskins cheerleader and even attended cheerleader alumni events, yet there is no record of her actually having been a cheerleader and former cheerleaders don't remember her.

QUOTE
One night out with friends, Harshman said, she was surprised when Michaele casually mentioned that she was a model. "I said, 'You never mentioned this to me before.' " Later, Harshman said, "it grew into 'supermodel.' I ignored it half the time."

Last year Michaele, now 44, told a Post reporter that she had been a Washington Redskins cheerleader, and she has been photographed at several alumni events. But the cheerleaders' director of marketing, Melanie Coburn, wrote in an e-mail: "We have no record of her being a member of the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders."

Nor could the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders Alumni Association find any record of her, said Terri Crane-Lamb, president of the association.

One former cheerleader, Konnie McKee, said Michaele came to alumni events, but no one remembered her being on the squad. McKee and Crane-Lamb noticed Michaele attending WRCAA events. "I remember Terri and I talking: 'What's the deal? Does anyone remember her?' "
SCTrojan
Well the Senate is obviously outraged--& should be. I hope charges are filed & that they're prosecuted. To their self-centered egos it was all about accepting the highest bidder for their stunt. For the govt & the general public, however, their shenanigans were simply unacceptable! Considering the national & global climate, with both terrorism & a bunch of wacked out right-wingers as a real threat, the Prez's safety should be of the utmost concern. & more than anything they should be used as as an example to warn others who might want to attempt a similar stunt. mad.gif

The Secret Service should be embarrassed! And these Reality Show wannabes should be charged with lying to federal officials. The two pictures, though, with Biden are hysterical. What a jackass!

The latest story is that the Salahi's had crashed the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Awards Dinner a few weeks ago (uh, hello, blonde lady at the Black Caucus dinner... did anyone think to check to she if she had an invitation? wink.gif ). President Obama was at this event and so raises further questions for the Secret Service. The rumour says that they snuck in through the entrance for bus boys and caterers and were caught sitting in somebody's seats.

After cancelling on Larry King on Monday, now it's reported that Michaele and Tareq Salahi will appear on the Today show this morning, interviewed by Matt Lauer. NBC says they did not pay for the interview.

Gotta love these:

QUOTE
Jones, a career military officer who serves as the Pentagon’s White House liaison, exchanged e-mails with the Salahis about the state dinner, but denies she promised them admittance.

“I did not state at any time, or imply that I had tickets for ANY portion of the evening’s events,” Jones said in a statement released by the White House late Monday. “I specifically stated that they did not have tickets and in fact that I did not have the authority to authorize attendance, admittance or access to any part of the evening’s activities. Even though I informed them of this, they still decided to come.”

QUOTE
Late Monday, a Washington, D.C., television station reported that the Salahis crashed a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Awards dinner on Sept. 26 at which Obama spoke. The station’s Web site quoted a foundation representative, Lance Jones, as saying the Salahis were escorted out by security guards after they were caught sitting at a table paid for by other donors.

& this is a real doozy:

Though this was a serious breach of security, it's unbelievable that Congress is spending more time investigating the gatecrashers than they are investigating the Fort Hood Massacre.

Those morons from northern Virginia passed through metal detectors, so the security risk to the president was minimized. Why were the warning signs, including correspondence with a radical imam, not followed up in the case of Major Hasan? That is outrageous!!
