Does anybody else appreciate the brilliance of this show that has high school football as its backdrop?
I have thoroughly enjoyed it for its entire run but this year has been the best. Zach Gilford, who plays Matt Saracen, the QB on the championship Dillon team, but now out of school, gave a heart wrenching performance in the most recent episode, when his father is killed in the Iraq War....
This is the best TV show I've come upon in years, but I get the feeling that it has a really small audience. Do any of you guys watch it, either on DirectV or on NBC?

Yeah, should have put a spoiler alert on this one.

I haven't seen any of Season 4 since I don't have DirecTV, but yeah, I've commented on another thread about this show and just how much I absolutely love it. Friday Night Lights portrays America at its very best. I have the first couple of seasons on DVD, and I find myself watching the episodes a 2nd and 3rd time, the only TV show ever that I can say I enjoy watching repeats.
The news about Matt's dad was a bit of a spoiler, but hardly unexpected. Everybody in Matt's life has left him, so it's not surprising that his dad "leaves" him too. I can't wait for the show to start up in January (on NBC, for us non-DirecTV guys).

I love this show and watch it on Directv - DVRed of course, since it's on opposite GLEE.
Taylor Kitsch and Kyle Chandler are so yummy.
Spoiler~~~~~~~~~
There will be another (closeted) gay character added to the cast. That's all I'm saying.

aaron, it's been so long since I've seen the show last season that I'm fuzzy on this ... who is the first gay character? And is he (or she) closeted? I'm totally blanking here.
Also, whatever happened to the character of Santiago? He was starting to be a significant character, then there was the writers strike, then poof, he was gone.
Don't give it away but can you at least answer this: is the new gay character hot??
(gawd, sometimes I just love being superficial)

Last season, Landry had a band and a girl named Devin joined it. Landry was falling for Devin but she told him she's gay. So now they're friends.
This season Devin asked Julie to accompany her to a gay club (?) in the next town.
Julie recognized a voice and turned around. Let's just say he is hot. Julie confronted him and said she wouldn't tell. "Tell what ?" he said.
The mayor of Dillon is also gay. So this guy would be the 3rd gay character (closeted or otherwise).

thanks for the reminder. I guess I was thinking about the major characters on the show, none of whom are gay, but forgot about Devin and the mayor (love the mayor, a total hoot!). And thanks for not spoiling it. I love being teased, and I can't wait to find out who the new gay character is.
btw, I've had a crush on Kyle Chandler since he was on "Homefront," which didn't last very long. Needless to say, I watched every episode of "Early Edition." I'll admit that I started watching FNL mostly because he was on it, but it would be my favorite show whether or not Coach Taylor were such a heartthrob.
Is it safe to assume that the hottie who happens to be gay is NOT Buddy Garrity??

Sorry if I gave away a little too much, but, trust me, it will not ruin it for you.

Anybody who is anti-abortion (I'm thinking you CrewChief) should watch the "I can't" episode here:

Season 5 of Friday Night Lights ended with a fantastic finale. Just want to repeat, as I have several times on this board, that this show, centered around a high school football coach, his family, and his players, is the best TV show of all time. It is epic. I can't understand why it never found a bigger audience, but thank you DirecTV for keeping it alive despite its small ratings. Season 5 will air on NBC sometime this spring.
