Congratulations Annise Parker. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/13/us/polit...tml?_r=1&hp. It's a great day to be a Houstonian.

Here, here HoustonGator. I am so proud to be from the Houston area.

I love how Annise didn't make her sexuality an issue either.

As the mayor-elect has said "I think my election will send a message to the world that Houston is a city that might surprise a lot of folks."
QUOTE
(Annise) Parker's election also makes her the second woman to become mayor of Houston. Other cities such as Providence, Rhode Island, and Portland, Oregon, have picked openly gay mayors. Houston is the fourth-largest U.S. city.

Parker's victory is also remarkable because a few years ago, Houston rejected a referendum to offer benefits to same-sex partners of city workers. Also, the city sits in a state where gay marriage is against the law.

Parker, 53, has never shied away from, nor made an issue of, her sexual orientation. She has been with her partner for 19 years and they have two adopted children.

"I have always stood up for the fact that I am gay. It's part of the resume that I bring to the table, but it's just a piece of the package," she said.

"There's a certain segment of Houston, there's a certain segment of society that has problems with the issues around sexual orientation," Parker said. "But the citizens of Houston have elected me six consecutive times to public office. They know me, they trust me."

Houston Chronicle coverage: Annise Parker elected Houston's next mayor: Nation watches as city becomes the largest in U.S. to choose an openly gay leader
QUOTE
Annise Danette Parker was elected mayor of Houston on Saturday, winning her seventh consecutive city election and becoming both the first contender in a generation to defeat the hand-picked candidate of Houston's business establishment and the first openly gay person to lead a major U.S. city.

It was fun to watch this race develop with Parker's win. While the rest of the LGBT nation has been bashing Texas politics as if Bush and Perry define us Parker has been serving openly in the city's Comptroller office and then ran for mayor. She's been in the lead all along.

Her orientation never became a campaign issue even though she never hid it. It wasn't until the run-off and an anti-gay group of conservatives and African-American pastors decided to make it an issue did it surface. When Gene Locke, her opponent, could have distanced himself from the fray more actively he chose to take the moderate road which gave many suspicion to his motives. In the end Parker won with a 6 point margin.

Texas still has a ways to go in terms of redefining the electorate but it's definitely an entirely different electorate than many like to portray it. If we can keep this momentum going we may be painting the walls of that newly remodeled Governor's Mansion blue very soon. You can bet Bill White, current mayor of Houston, is committed to LGBT rights.

A wonderful triumph for Parker, Houston, and LGBTQ people! And I love her diverse family too!
