So....for all us Atlantic residents from the Carolinas up through New England...how ya doin? I went to the grocery store yesterday to pick up some snowed in comfort food and it was a zoo!!!! You'd swear people think they are going to be snowed in for a month. But, I still love it. Usually places to the west get the heavy snow but in a rareity...the I-95 corridor is the bullseye and we are expecting somewhere between 20-30" of snow when its all done. I, for one, am so happy I have an SUV right now because the boyfriend put chains on the tires and I was able to go Christmas shopping on what is known as the heaviest volume day before Christmas without having to deal with many people at all.
So now I just plan to snuggle up with my papi and some movies, get in some freaky sneaky time (several times hopefully) and eat good ole snowed in comfort food. Hope everyone affected by this is being careful. For those bitchin...shut it up because we have been spoiled for YEARS in the DC, Baltimore, Philly, NY corridor with no storms like this. For snow lovers like me....I am in my element. So beautiful watching it come down and coat the trees. White Christmas is 100% guaranteed cuz this snow is going nowhere any time soon.

I am going to complain about it all I want because I hate winter. I don't care how spoiled we've been.
And to me, it's only a white Christmas if the snow falls on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Otherwise it's just old snow. And in cities, the dirt and pollution turns it gray.

Looks like most people along the I-95 corridor from DC to New York will get real totals will be somewhere between 10-20 inches. The Philly metro area will probably come in somewhere in the 10-18 range depending on which side of 95 you are on.

I hate winter, and have spent my life in the north (and grew up where it actually snows a lot in winter, unlike here in NYC). BUT, I do love a big storm.

Fun to watch, breaks up the monotony of winter, forces people to slow down and chill for a change.

Well, the forecasts here in Philly were a bit underestimated in some parts of the region. While the burbs where I live, did get in that 12-18 range, the official airport reading was 23.2 inches the second highest total in the city's history.

Ugh, I gambled and decided to stay in NYC until today because I had Saturday night plans. Bad call. I bought tickets (Jet Blue gives you a full refund for these weather-related issues) on five different flights. The 6 00 am flight was canceled, then I gambled that the 8 00 and 11 00 flight were likely to be canceled as well, and took the refund on those flights, figuring the 6 00 pm flight was late enough in the day that it would be unaffected. Well, as of right now the 6 00 pm flight is the only additional flight Jet Blue has canceled. So I'm down to my last option, the 7 00 pm flight. If that's canceled the next flight with an available seat isn't until Thursday - Christmas Eve! THIS is why I try and just spend the whole winter in Fort Lauderdale - grrrrrrrr!

Miracle of miracles: the storm has totally bypassed northern New England. We have had no snow at all in central Maine. Now you know what we deal with all the away into April -- one nor'easter after another. Happy digging out! (Really, I do like snow, but not so much in April.)

They KEEP predicting snow for Chicago, and it never seems to come...we had about a half-inch Friday, it melted, we got another half-inch Sunday morning, it's still here...barely a dusting. I am thrilled. I hope it is the warmest El Nino year on record. I was able to plant spring bulbs in the first week of December. When Christmas is over, I will want them to bloom! I'm ready for summer, since we really didn't get one last year.

The snowfall yesterday and the day before was the:
1-Second largest Philadelphia snowfall on record dating to1884. Most single snowfall was 1996.
2-First time a "Winter's-worth" of snow has fallen before Winter officially started.
I remember that cars were not visible in the parking lot in front of our place when we were living in Jersey then.
But on the bright side
there are a lot of cute guys out shovelling snow if you have a little imagination.

Being from the North I can not understand the hysterics of panic buying at the stores but found myself that Friday doing the same thing. After shoveling out the cars for the 4th time that Sunday Morning, I fell and fractured my ankle in 3 places. I admit I got spoiled with the mild winters we have gotten in Maryland in the past few years. I am now not even close to a fan of the snow! I can not wait for the longer days and warmer sun. But I am sure once I heal and the ankle becomes a faint memory I will sit in awe as the snow flies and piles up again like it did that weekend.

Well...here we go again. Seems as though the I-95 Corridor from Philadelphia down through Washington, DC is the bullseye for another major winter storm that is likely to drop 12" + of snow early Friday through Saturday. The boyfriend and I are leaving for Miami on Friday (my birthday) and our flight better not be canceled.

Depends on the time of your flight, from what I'm hearing.
From what the Accuweather report on channel 6 said, it seems it depends on the storm track -- could be 5+ inches around here with the heavier band to the south, or it could be 12+ through the entire area. But it's not really going to crank up until the afternoon or evening.

I was just visiting my sister in MA during a business trip to Rhode Island and it ticks me off that she's had about 7 - 8 inches of snow all winter and we got more than that in the last week here in DC. I left last Sunday and had to shovel out the car from the 5 - 6 inches we got on Saturday, then returned to another 5 inches or so yesterday. Because my driveway is in the back, north-facing, side of my house it gets no sun, so I still had a lot of wet, heavy snow last night. I was so tired out from the trip I couldn't face shovelling, so I just slid the car into the driveway. Now I'll have to shovel tonight if I want any hope of getting the car out after this weekend's storm.
Having grown up in New England, I love snow, but this is a bit much. We've already had the snowiest December on record, and I think we are aiming for the snowiest winter ever. The weather service upgraded us from a Winter Storm Watch to a Warning, with predictions of 16 - 24 inches.
On the positive side, having lived in the DC area for 20 years, I am very impressed with Adrian Fenty and his administration's snow removal efforts. During the December snow Mayor Fenty announced that about 1/4 of all the snow removal machinery would be devoted to plowing side streets, which often weren't touched for days after past snows as the plows worked to get the main roads completely clear first. Until now, MD, VA and DC never seemed to understand that if you plow the side streets, allowing people to get their cars out after a snowfall, the traffic will help keep major roads less snowy, because the heat of the cars helps melt the snow. Fenty seems to have finally figured this out. The Monday after the 18 inches of snow we got in December, it was only in DC that all the Metro buses could run; the bus routes in the suburbs were limited to snow emergency routes because they still had not gotten their side streets plowed.

Sounds like you all back east are getting a taste of what we had to endure for the past 2 years out here. Namely record snowfalls. This past winter has been like spring. Our lows are what our normal highs in the day should be. Its an El Nino winter for the west coast, hence the strong storms that hit California and proceed through the southern/middle part of the country then sometimes head north into the big cities...I just read yesterday though that some guy that predicts the weather for the farmers in my area says looks like another La Nina ( more snowier winter) winter for us here in 2010-2011, but shouldn't be as strong as the past 2 though. Thank God!

Dupont Circle snowball fight among pastimes as storm continues blowingQUOTE
By 1 p.m. Saturday, more than 5,000 people had signed up for the Official Dupont Circle Snowball Fight group on Facebook, with volleys scheduled to start at 2 p.m. An outdoor bar had been set up at the Dupont Hotel, and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty even stopped by to say hello and shake hands. Police were expected to be on hand to keep things calm.
The fight is being live streamed. A stream of photos is also planned on Flickr.

Ok so the boyfriend and I were able to get out Friday morning to Miami before the airports closed and I was kind of bummed that I missed "Snowmageddon". Well...apparently mother nature felt bad for me and is giving me a make up session as we are slated to get socked with another 18" + of snow. Not as big as the first storm but certainly not what most people want on top of the already almost 30" that fell around here on Saturday. Thank goodness our flight worked out the way that it did and we were able to get back today before the airports close yet again. Didn't that groundhog see his shadow too?

I know it sucks for a lot of people but its February and its the mid-Atlantic. If you don't want to deal with snow, move to Phoenix.

It may be cliché by this point, but JFK described Washington as a city with Southern efficiency and Northern charm. Snow aside, I actually think of DC as being reasonably well-run -- of course, that's from an outsider's POV.
Even in a city that deals with it moderately well, a heavy snowfall is still a pain in the ass. I sympathize, brothers -- but at least we didn't get it this time. It was like a little trip to Bermuda just to see it snowing elsewhere but not here.

Hey Swiminbuff - gotta luv it here - so far in Tronto. I've been riding my bike to work everyday still until this morning because the roads looked a little slick from the light dusting overnight. But if the roads stay clear overnight - I'll likely be pedaling in again in the morning
Usually my bike is parked December through February because the daytime melt and night time re-freeze of snow piles along the curb and sides of the street always mades for a slippery and dangerous bike ride. But this winter with never enough snow to ever have to plow and shovel - there have been no snow piles along the side of the road - so totally dry and safe for bike riding all winter - so far.

"SNOWVERKILL" Thats brilliant!! Thats one I hadn't heard yet and that is my favorite. I really do love the snow but this really is overkill because now it just becomes ridiculous to navigate. The side streets are HORRENDOUS and it looks like its going to be cold for awhile which means this crap isn't going anywhere. Parking lots at any public place are going to have limited spaces because the snow is taking up a lot of spaces. Thank god I have a garage and don't have to deal with shoveling out. The only thing that sucked was that my driveway is kind of long, but thank god the boyfriend made sure we bought a snow blower a couple winters ago. It is getting quite the usage this winter. Not that I use it of course; the boyfriend does all of that clean up!! I want no parts of it! He's real particular about how its done anyway so it works out fine.

Officially there was a total of 5.6 inches here -- on the low end or lower than predictions. With the wind blowing it was hard to tell how much actually fell. There were spots in front of my house that were nearly snow-free and others where it drifted to nearly a foot. Less snow to the south, more to the north (unlike the other storms). Also, it snowed much of yesterday afternoon but it melted because the temps were above freezing. It didn't start coating the ground until after 7 pm.

Mother Nautre hardly needs me to defend
him but the scientific explanation for the cold and snow around the globe (in 2011) does have a very good
explanation.
Apparently the increase is due to diversion of air flow around the earth by the distortion of increased snowfall deposits in the highlands of Siberia and Eurasia, causing a coldspot that acts like a solid rock in the river of air flow around the world.
The source of the increased snow is the warming of the globe which places more moisture in the atmosphere. What goes up either must come down or go out to space. Fortunately for us it does not go out to space. Unfortunately for us it comes down as snow where it is cold enough, or as rain where it is not.
Perhaps the increase in rain in places that do not normally get it - such as currently occurring in Australia - is also a result of this.
If the theory is correct, we may be able to expect more precipitation in unusual places throughout the planet.

Umm...global warming doesn't mean that it will never get cold or not snow again. The EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE (ya know...scientific shit that scientists and PhD guys and gals have been studying for years) PROVE that it does exist. So the non believers can continue with their ideologies but the GLOBAL evidence is there that global warming exists. Kthanksbye!!!
