I thought I would start a thread to post stupid things that politicians say or do.
New Hampshire State Representative Nick Levasseur (Dem.)
posted on his Facebook page: "Anime is a prime example that two nukes just wasn't enough." When it was pointed out that suggesting that two nuclear bombs were insufficient punishment for Japan for creating a style of animation was, uh, insensitive, he offered an
apology.
QUOTE
I would like to deeply apologize for the insensitivity of this post. It was a poorly thought out comment, posted jest on my private facebook page. It was never intended to be viewed by anyone other than friends. This, of course, does not excuse the comment. This type of statement has no place in public or private discourse. It does not represent any true opinion, political or personal. My record in the New Hampshire House shows a commitment to equality and social justice. It is a record of which I am most proud. This comment is a disappointment not only to the people of New Hampshire, whom it has been my privilege to serve, but also to my own beliefs and moral code.

Sarah Palin suggests the
Nuclear option for kids who are teased in school.
So would having a gun have helped
Phoebe Prince defend herself, or would it have simply made her suicide easier (and messier)?
Does Palin want us to spend more money we can't afford maintaining the current useless stockpile, making it more likely that proliferation will eventually reach the terrorists or a "rogue state"?
Is she more interested in scoring political points than national security?
Does Palin think?

Answer? No. She can't. She needs a brain in order to think. Because of that, she will probably land the 2012 nomination as Republican candidate for President of the United States. Her against Obama in a debate? Priceless.

OBAMA: Jonas brothers are here, they're out there somewhere. Sasha annd Malia are huge fans, but boys, don't get any ideas.
Two words for you: predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I'm joking?
"According to the New America Foundation, Obama has killed somewhere between 109 and 188 civilians with drones during his presidency."

I also found Obama's lighthearted reference to predator drones unwise., even in the context of a comedic event. But the
consequences of his actions may eventually be the judge of him and us.
He has issued orders to
kill terrorists as defined by remote surveillance rather than any judicial process. I believe we have gotten invaluable information from many of the terrorists captured instead of killed. And even more from those who are held in captivity rather than tortured and executed. This is no small matter. The death penalty is not only immoral but counter-productive, and not just because it encourages other zealots to seek martyrdom.
It eliminates yet another opportunity to understand their motivations and to prevent such socially-dysfunctional ideas from becoming more popular in the first place.
But there has been a plethora of verifiably nonsensical and cynical rhetoric coming from Obama's critics that make his "humor" about drone attacks seem like the wisdom of the ages.
The list is
almost endless. And that doesn't include such accusations as the Obama administration deliberately causing the Gulf oil spill.

That was not a good remark by Obama either, I agree. Some things are just not meant to be joked about considering the fact that civilians have been the victims of those drones. He had a Joe Biden moment. Watch it, Barack!!
True though that in comparison, some of Obama's biggest critics have dipshit moments that are way worse than anything he has said. Bill Maher made a good point last night on how the Rethuglicans will reach for anything and how some are calling the oil spill Obama's "Katrina". Maher said that Katrina was a natural disaster in which Bush had warning and that no one was alerting Obama that the rig was going to blow up. He said I guess they figured hmmm...Louisiana and disaster...we don't need to think anymore...its Obama's Katrina.

They are ALL looking for that glorious, 10-second soundbite that will get them in the first three minutes of a newscast, radio or televison. It has become so predictable. A little self-editing goes a long way. Then again, it's bound to happen to anyone who has a hot mic shoved in their face 24/7. Fatigue, maybe a lil' alcohol, and yes, utter stupidity are to blame. This is one true instance of equal opportunity. It has happened in just about every administration since the microphone was invented. I guess it shows they are really human after all!

I ususally admire Bill Maher's on-point cuts at politicians on both sides of the isle. Which is why it irks me so much when a joke misses the mark as happened with the one about
"fighting them over there" which occurs at the end of the linked article.
Since the Bush administration was not the least bit concerned with fighting terrorists when it went into Iraq (otherwise they would have concentrated on
Pakgnaistan as Obama is currently doing) it makes no sense to accuse Obama of continuing Bush's policy just because they are both prosecuting foreign wars.
Regardless of what one thinks of the war in Afghanistan - or Maher's humor - it doesn't do any good to get the facts wrong even on a comedy show, especially when you've started taking on the serious role of commentator on a news network.

If the Afghan war consists of "fighting terrorists," it's doing it pretty badly.
And last I checked, Obama is fighting the Iraq war as well.

Not all Tennesseeans agree with Stacey Campfield:
Knoxville restaurant owner boots, bans state Sen. Stacey Campfield for AIDS remarksQUOTE
Martha Boggs, owner of the Bistro at the Bijou, said she ordered the controversial Republican legislator out of her restaurant Sunday in disgust over his recent remarks about the origin of AIDS.
"He's gone from being stupid to dangerous," Boggs said today. "It's just my way of standing up to a bully."
* * *
The sign in front of the Bistro today reads, "Today's Special: Fried Chicken. Crispy Chicken Livers. No Stacey."
Campfield, meanwhile, brought up the
the Civil Rights movement.
QUOTE
Campfield stood by his assertions in a blog post and mused about his treatment at the restaurant:
"In the 60's my grandfather sat at the lunch counters with the blacks in Knoxville to help break up the segregation of the races. I guess some people still support segregation. Just segregation of thought. Some people have told me my civil rights were violated under the 1964 civil rights act in that a person can not be denied service based on their religious beliefs. (I am catholic and the catholic church does not support the act of homosexuality) I had not thought about that much.

Girl Scouts promote abortion, homosexualityQUOTE
Undaunted by ridicule from the leader of his own party, an Indiana lawmaker is standing by his allegations that the Girl Scouts is a radical organization that promotes abortions and homosexuality.

Morris’ comments about the Girl Scouts came in a letter he sent to House Republicans on Saturday that said he had conducted some research on the Internet and discovered that the scouts are a "tactical arm" of Planned Parenthood.

Morris, in his letter to lawmakers, said some Christian conservatives who share his concerns have pulled their children out of Girl Scouts. He also pointed to a Colorado Girl Scout troop’s acceptance of a transgender child last month as another reason to leave the group.

Wisconsin GOP Leader Proposes Legislation To Blame Single Parents For Child Abuse And NeglectQUOTE
Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman... has introduced a bill that would require the State of Wisconsin to officially deem single parenthood to be a "contributor" to child abuse and neglect and to put the same into statutory laws of the state.

You should know that it was Senator Grothman who informed us last year that "The Left and the social welfare establishment want children born out of wedlock because they are far more likely to be dependent on the government." As the article inferred, Bachmann both totally screwed up with her poor analogy and showed that she misunderstood what Obama has said.
Holding speculators to account for deliberately hoarding oil to artificially jack up the price, then selling for a profit is not waving a sticky black tar-covered rabbit at them - or whatever image she's trying to create.
And it is obvious that she only stretched for the tar baby analogy because Obama is black. No way that ridiculously inappropriate mixed metaphor would have occured to her for a white president.
It is a continuation of rump group of tea party-types to use unsubtle racism as a means of alienating gullible voters from Obama and obfuscating the Republican party's lack of solutions to any of the country's problems.

When called on his comments, Coffman offered this apology:

"I apologize,” he said. “I have confidence in President Obama's citizenship and legitimacy as President of the United States.”

A Canadian MP (Member of Parliament) is worried that fetuses are being
bullied.
QUOTE
Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott, a long-time anti-abortion crusader in Parliament, is calling for anti-bullying initiatives to target the nation’s fetuses.
Vellacott picked up on the anti-bullying discourse on Parliament Hill (the Senate is currently studying how to curb and help those affected by cyberbullying), saying that all the talk about bullying is missing the biggest bullies in the country — abortionists.
“In light of this new awareness of bullying, consistency and credibility demands that we tackle the most cruel and most common bullying of all – the bullying, and ultimately killing, of babies in the womb,” Vellacott said.
His argument is that new research has shown that fetuses can feel pain in the womb at a young stage of development, which makes an abortion a form of bullying and “far worse than any case of school-yard and neighbourhood bullying.” Why? Because the bullying always ends with a dead victim, he argues.
“At a time when Canadians are demanding community and political action to bring an end to the bullying of our children, it is vital in these anti-bullying strategies to address the lethal bullying of the child in the womb,” Vellacott said.

We're not the only ones fascinated with the tortured circumlocutions of Sarah Palin. During the
Egyptian presidential debate, as much commercial spectacle as informative, the journalist Abdel Rahman-Hussein writes to the Guardian:
QUOTE
It was also not without its surreal moments. Beforehand, the presenters discussed debates in the US and Europe, and while talking about the debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin of 2008, footage was aired of Tina Fey impersonating Palin on the satirical television show Saturday Night Live.
To be fair, Palin never said most of the things Fey did in her portrayal.
But it appears Palin may have an audience appeal, if not a fan base, even among Sunni Muslim Egyptians. Either way she must be stunned.
Ya know, ya really can see Egypt from Israel. You betcha!
