I am a 10-year season ticket holder to the Ottawa 67s major jr. hockey. At last night's game, some guy a few rows behind me was shouting homophobic slurs. I heard "queer" several times and "You faggot!" at least twice. I think he might have been shouting at the officials, but I don't know and it doesn't matter who the target was.

Other than grind my teeth, I did nothing. Nor did I ever turn around to try to figure out who it was because I didn't want to give him the attention he probably craved. In retrospect, I wish I'd thought to contact an usher to have him removed.

What I want to know is: Should I have done or said anything? If so, what?

I'd suggest "Watch your language!" Then call security if it doesn't stop.

When confronted with this, it's best to get security immediately, rather than to confront them. They best know how to handle obnoxious behavior. The guy was probably drinking, and you just don't know how quickly an encounter can escalate to a brawl or worse.

Don't tolerate it or pass it off, take action by getting security.
