That should have been the third perfect game this season. I guess the Umps don't want to many to occur in one season.

Umpires make honest mistakes all the time.
I am in favor of ditching "the human element," however, in favor of accurate robots.

That's a shame. Were the umpires not able to get together and discuss the obviously blown call? This could have been a historic season of perfect games. Will Galarraga be credited with a one-hit shutout with an *should have been a perfect game.

Bud won't overturn Joyce's call, I think he should. There's no harm to the record books save for a hit taken away from the Tribe. A wrong gets righted, and Joyce doesn't live the rest of his existence as "the ump that cost that pitcher a perfect game". There's no downside.
Dangerous precedent? Doubtful, overturning the "Pine Tar" incident an restoring a home run to George Brett didn't open the floodgates for similar situations, and that was twenty seven years ago.

Great points Blueraider! To do nothing further complicates the integrity of the MLB. Very true - no downside - Selig should have awarded Galarraga the perfect game

That was a rule interpretation, not a judgment call. If we're overturning judgment calls after games end (as opposed to the umpires meeting and reversing the call right away, or using a replay system), then almost any game is subject to the final score being wiped out and play resumed from the point where the call occurred. It would be utter chaos. It's a sad story but to award a perfect game in this manner would be a travesty.

The words 'integrity' and 'Selig' should NEVER be used in the same sentence! This is unique because it was the 27th out. If official scorers are allowed to change rulings the day after, then Bud as commissioner should have stepped in and righted a wrong. If this involved the Yankees or Red Sox or the Dodgers, I bet he would have reacted differently! Another black eye to baseball under the watch of Bud Selig!!
I wonder if the Tigers are going to sell the 'unsold' tickets for this game like the Phillies did for the Halladay perfect game! Oh wait, this is just a one hitter!! Way to go Bud!!

Don't forget the Brewers...If Gallaraga was pitching for them Selig would change the call.

The only redeeming part of this whole thing is how quickly and honestly came out and admitted he screwed up, he didn't try to cover it up with BS.
Selig is a complete prick for not overturning the call, and HE should be fired. (who would actually be responsible for that tho?)
Although I will give Joyce limited credit for admitting he was wrong, he should have instinctively known "ok, wait...I should take more than a milisecond to make this call" He knew what was riding on it, and I'm sorry, being on the last out....That call should have not have been made until he got the other Umps opinion.
And of course this whole thing did nothing to further the cause of Umps.

Those tickets are being sold by the Marlins. The game was in Florida. Had it been in Philadelphia there'd have been no tickets to sell.

As much as that was a complete travesty, I have to say that both Gallaraga and Joyce were complete class acts about it. Joyce admitted his mistake right away, which is a nice change from what usually happens...

Perfect games are sort of freak occurrences... they're certainly nowhere as important as World Series titles or playoff games, a number of which have been determined by bad calls (or non-calls).
Also, the PITCHER really does not throw one, since no errors by his teammates can occur. The entire defensive team "esecutes" one.

Galarraga is seen around the game as a #5 starter at best.

I really believe that will change, Bill, he is still young.
