I think it's to the point where we can safely say "that picture is sooooo retro"

And it's funny how "He Who Shall Not Be Named" is brought up just in time for the new Harry Potter movie.

For all you kids who don't get this post, do a search in the archives for HWSNBN.

Excellent article about him here (but it's a couple of years old). No mention of the gay beefcake icon factor.

I guess we can be sure he is circumcised
willyboy
I'd be more than happy to check.

He's Jewish. Of course he's circumcised. And it was probably done by the Mohels. They are practitioners of the ancient Jewish rite of circumcision. They use the Mogen clamp to remove the skin for newborns. I bet Gabe's family could make some good money selling his snippet to the highest bidder. biggrin.gif

Off-topic...but just *what* do they do with the snippet?
Shytownmofo
I don't know about 30 years ago, but nowadays, they do keep the little snippet, and culture it.

It then continues to grow. This is then used for research, and to make skin grafts for people who have injuries like severe burns.

When they get enough of them, they make them into a wallet. When you rub the wallet it turns into a couch. [old joke, but still one of my faves]

I know very few Jewish parents who are not Orthodox who use a mohel. most have the pediatrican do the circumcision. Orthodox and Chasidics of course use the mohel. Most Chasidics would have home births. Lubabvitchers and Satmars are examples of Chasidics. This bodybuilder probably was circumcised by the family doctor. Some Jewish doctors are trained mohels. I know a few who are. I have never seen the bodybuilder shown here nude. Ben Cohen the rugger from England had a Ashkenazy Jewish great grandfather, but the rest of his family are Catholic. He was not raised Jewish and would not be considered Jewish by Jewish law. He is uncut.

My experience has been quite the opposite. Yes, there are a few who simply have the obstrecian do the circumcision in the hospital, but most will get a Mohel (who is usually a rabbi, but not necessarily) to do it on the eighth day after birth. There's a certain "if we're going to do this, we might as well do it right" attittude. And it is becoming more common (though "more" is a relative term; it is still very uncommon in general) for secular Jews to not circumsise their sons at all.

The seperation of "Orthodox" and "Chasidic" is a bit of a misnomer. Orthodoxy is a very large umbrella that includes Modern Orthodox, Ultra Orthodox, Chasidic and several other branches of Jewish thought. Each of these subgroups are distinct. Chasidism is extremely fractured. I don't think there are a pair of Satmar and Lubavitch Chasidim who would be willing to concede they are members of the same group.

I've never heard of home births in any of these communities. Certainly in the Modern Orthodox community it is exceedingly rare.

The snippets are traditionally buried. I'm not aware of any shift to using them for scientific experimentation, but that would not be out of the realm of possibility.

So what would happen when a Jewish family were to adopt a child who was not born of faith. Would the child be Jewish and if it was a boy of say age 1 and up would they have to be circumsized?
Chill-Trick
I love when thread start out with posting a hot picture of a hot guy, and it somehow does into a discussion about circumcision smile.gif

Especially since so many serious discussions on topics are turned into "He's SOOOOOOOOOOO HOT!!" threads. A little poetic justice.
ColoradoSprtsnut
And we are all learning something in the process...
So this is a good thing.
So now that it is obvious that he is Jewish...Do we know of any other Jewish players/actors etc that we can for sure rule as being circumsized?

I was watching "Independence Day" the other night and wondered whatever happened to Bill Pullman. He was so adorable in that film

A minor (of course, that's a minor in the ecclesiatic sense; the age of majority regarding religious obligations is 13 for boys and 12 for girls) who is adopted by a jewish family can be immediately converted to Judaism. Once the age of majority is reached such a child would have to reaffirm their religion and could choose to invalidate the conversion. If a child is adopted after the age of ecclesiatic majority, he or she would have to go through the adult conversion process which can be much more difficult, particularly among the Orthodox.

Any male, child or adult, being converted to Judaism must be circumcised. If a person was circumcised by a doctor as a medical procedure, as many male children are in the United States, it's up to the rabbi performing the conversion. Often there is a ritual "blood letting" to reaffirm the religious nature of circumcision.

I had the biggest crush on him after I saw "While You Were Sleeping." What a cutie!

Sammy Davis Jr. was converted to reform Judaism in the sixties, but they did not require him to get circumcised. But many Reform rabbis would have a different view nowadays. JQueer is so right about the satmars and Lubabvitchers not recognising each other. The satmars are non zionists unlike the the Lubabvitchers for one thing. Yes, modern Orthodox are certainly totally different than say Chasidics. Joe Lieberman the senator from New England is an example of modern Orthodox. Whatever the faith of the model, he is a handsome fella.

And speaking of Jewish converts. Marilyn Monroe converted to reform Judaism before she married Arthur Miller. Judaism gave this tortured soul alot of comfort. I think that was a great thing.

I read that Price Charles was circumcised by a mohel even though he is not Jewish. His sons however were not circumcised. Apparently, British male royals were once customarily circumcised. Prince Charles two younger brothers are also intact like his sons.
Shytownmofo
Although, I did hear a few years back, that Prince William did go into the hospital for "Elective Surgery." The speculation at the time was that he had a limited circumcision done to aleiviate a very tight foreskin.
