are we going to start throwing names out there?

I saw this somewhere else and couldn't think of anyone. Is John Cena really and athlete?

The clue would imply it's someone from football....I'm perplexed.

Could it be the Rock ?! (even thought the tight end would suggest football...)

Oh, that's a great guess.....I've always gotten a gay vibe from him. He has cousins from the same area I grew up in....have met him at big family events and reunions.

Blind Items and gossip columns in general are fun to read, but I leave it at that. Who knows whom this refers to, and who knows if it's true? A few years ago, it was a baseball player. Everyone thought it was Mike Piazza. And then there's the thrice married Tom Cruise. They're not. And if they are, do you really want them playing for our team, if they don't have the balls to come out at the pinnacle of their careers?

I am a firm believer that if you are gay or lesbian, you should be open about it. And you should come out, when you decide it is right for you. And if it is safe. That is especially true for young people. Teenage men and women should only come out, if the environment is safe for them.

The exceptions are hypocritical politicians and other public figures, who lead double lives (straight appearing, but gay in private) and who are homophobic, should be outed!

As for athletes and other public figures who are gay but not out to the public, well, we should respect their privacy. I wish that they would come out. In a political environment today that still witnesses the demonization of LGBT individuals, I believe that they have a duty to come out. But what if you are a young actor, who's just starting out in his career with a hit movie or hit TV show? Or a rookie Tight End just gaining notice? How would it have an effect on their careers?

It's not a perfect world.

Getting back to the Blind Items, well, how come the speculation is nearly always about good looking actors or athletes? More wishful thinking than anything else. And sometimes homophobia lurks behind the speculation. Speaking from my own experience, I still remember a girl whom I knew at 20, asking me if I was gay. Oh, I knew that I was then. I was in the closet and very scared someone would find out my secret. She wasn't asking out of care or empathy. It was more out of malice. Oh, I denied it. Twenty years or more later, I wish that I had the balls then to proclaim it loudly. Still remembering that fear, when I read a Blind Item about a public figure possibly being gay, I try to resist speculating in order to give that guy or gal the respect of privacy that my so-called friend denied me all those years ago.

Yes, yes, yes...it's wishful thinking! And I usually don't comment on them either. For some reason this one really intrigued me smile.gif

Generally I agree that one should have the space to come out in their own time, I think that line begins to blur the more they trade on a "straight" image for fame and money, as that is damaging to the community as a whole. And certainly I don't think they have a right to privacy if they advocate anti-gay policies.

Blind items are fun as a guessing game- I'm not for dragging anyone out of the closet unless they are some closet case with power to discriminate.
