Derek Jeter is poised to join the 3,000 hit club.
I'm not a Yankee fan, but I've always liked Jeter. He stands at 2,993 hits as of today. 7 more to go...

It's too bad that, at age 37, he's even more of a liability in the field than he's been, and his offensive power seems gone. (OK, not so bad for Yankee haters.)
He is a Hall of Fame-caliber player, but overrated as such players go.
And really, 3000 hits signifies being very good and healthy for a long time, not inner-circle greatness. Johnny Damon has a decent shot at 3000 hits -- does anyone think he's one of the ten best players of his generation? Not remotely.
