Out Country singer Chely Wright got hitched this weekend to her girlfriend Lauren Blitzer in Connecticut.

Country Singer Weds!

Instead of hearing or reading about this wedding in the mainstream media, I have been barraged by reports of the wedding of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. While I wish Kardashian and Humphries a long and happy life together, their wedding strikes me as little more than a crass, vulgar, publicity and profit-seeking example of conspicuous consumption from a woman who has no claim to fame other than as someone who is famous for being famous.

Chely Wright chose to reveal her sexuality, knowing that it might have an adverse effect on her career in a genre of music, whose fan base is homophobic. And, indeed, her decision has affected her career. Nonethesless, she remains a true role model for all, straight and gay. As marriage equality spreads, why not celebrate the union of these two women?

What a study in contrasts!
