I might as well be the one to start the good ship Mariners thread.
I am excited for the season to start. It's probably the last year for Edgar and I really want them to win it all for him. The M's suffered a setback as Rafael Soriano will be out for about a month with a internal oblique strain. Soriano is one of their young stud relievers.
The M's have the pitching, but they still need another bat. They have the newly freed up Kaz money so we'll see what happens.
The season opens with 6 of 9 against the dreaded Angels and 3 with Oakland.
What a way to start the season.

Okay Duck Boy isnt guilty of this, but how come every time I ask someone to go to a Sonics game with me, there always seems to be some problem like their grandma all of a sudden is in the hospital, or their boyfriend is having some kind of crisis. But with the M's it is just the opposite, when there are so many other things to do in the summer time, people are always asking me to go to these and are already trying to make plans for these games this summer.
Because the NBA sucks?

The other night, for example, the Detroit Pistons -- with their newly rebuilt team featuring Rasheed Wallace -- managed to score just 76 points against the sinking-like-a-stone Philadelphia 76ers. Detroit still won by 10 points. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Yeah I think I'm going the weekend of the 19th. My plan is to see my two of my teams the A's and the Mariners...
I guess I'm not that decisive. I can't just pick one and stick with them. But they're both so cute.

One of these days I'm going to take a trip down there to watch some spring baseball. I just haven't put much effort into coordinating a trip.

Duckboy as you should know it all depends on flight loads. It can be tricky, as alot of people from the NW go down for spring training and alot of college kids head that way for spring break. I am looking at the first or second weekend in March. After that I have to devote my attention to March Madness.

If I remember it correctly his partner works for NW based airline, so I think he does a fair amount of traveling like myself. I thought I read somewhere on another thread that duckboy is trying to get you to hit Philly with him?

I would go in a heartbeat but I will have just gotten back from 2 weeks in Cancun, and my manager will be on vacation and we both can't be off at the same time.
I am hoping the boys from Seattle will be able to head back East for one of the Fantabulous DC get togethers, or gay day with the Philly's. We can all fly out on Alaska...

Well all of those would work. My partner works for Alaska so I would fly to DC and take the train or rent a car from there. I do have buddy passes so if we ever did a Seattle outsporter's visit back East, we could all go together and use buddy passes I have.
I bank all of miles into the Alaska program as their miles do not expire. I am pretty sure all of the airlines you mentioned are partnered with Alaska. When we fly to Hawaii we fly on Northwest and bank the miles with Alaska.

Hmmm that would be cool. Last time I flew Continental because they were half the price Alaska was asking for. But it was cool like 1st Class because I had all 3 seats to myself each way, but they showed some god awfull Sean Connery movie, The League of extraordinary Gentlemen.

I just found a great site for a Mariners blog. It's by the guy who created the Mariner Magazine Grnad Salami. The blog is a place to go because it compiles al the different Mariners dites onto one page.

All of these airlines fly into Philly, although you'll probably have to change planes in one of their hubs. Remember Southwest starts flying into Philly on May 9th. If you can't make the conference in May, there is always Gay Day (oops, Night) with the Phillies on a certain undisclosed Monday night in August. wink

In back-to-back preseason games between the Mariners and Padres over the weekend, 38 runs were scored between the two teams! (San Diego 15-2, avenged by Seattle 16-5). It looks like former Mariner Jeff Cirillo, who played poorly in Seattle, scored a run for his new team.
JeffWa
Mar 16 2004, 10:18 AM
isnt that normal Cirillo form though? start of spring training well with a new team and then tank during the regular season? I think speizio is a good fit at third. Just gonna take a little time for him to get readusted to it. He's a hard working player. Can't wait for opening day.
Jim Allen
Mar 16 2004, 10:50 AM
Spezio should be a useful player for the M's. He was terrific for the Angels in 2002, but got caught up in things that were out of his control last year and wasn't really needed for this year. He should be a solid .270/15/80 guy if he stays healthy and plays regularly.
I wonder if his band Sandfrog is still together though?
JeffWa
Mar 16 2004, 02:39 PM
looks like his band is still together, thier website says they were shooting a video feb 2004. here is the website link
http://www.sandfrog.com/ good thing he plays ball better than he sings :-P The M's are still looking good in spring training. Hope fully the pitching improves and Freddy can step up and have a better season. I think the mariner defense is pretty tough this year. pretty solid all around. left side of the infield may be a little suspect with speizio getting used to third and Aurillia playing short. But i think overall thier pretty solid
Marc
Mar 20 2004, 11:01 AM
Speizio looks kinda scary in that photo! I had forgotten about Sandfrog, although it was mentioned several times during the Angels' playoff run in '02. I wonder if he will team up with Barry Zito for some musical entertainment during one of the frequent meetings between the Mariners and the A's this season
I'm going to miss Mike Cameron, who is now with the Mets. It looks like Randy Winn will move over to centre field. I don't know much about Raul Ibanaz (acquired from the Royals) but he will apparently cover left field, leaving Ichiro as the only veteran in the Mariners' outfield.
Jamie Moyer and Dan Wilson are two of my favourite Mariners; here's a nice little article that Moyer recently wrote about Wilson:

great article by Jamie praising Dan wilson. I like Dan wilson and Jamie moyer both, however i am wondering if we are going to start seeing some younger faces get more playing time with the mariners. Ben Wilson is someone who may or may not get alot of time behind the plate. Have read a couple or articles saying mariner Brass are not happy with his production and work this spring. But he doesnt seem to worried about it. Outfield for the M's is going to be interesting. Ichiro is the defenite veteran in Right field, Winn is a competitor and i think will run down alot of balls in center. He is a consitent performer and i think will be fine in center despite his arm. He is no Cammy thats for certain. Left field with Ibanez should be interesting. the scouting report on him says that he doesnt read fly balls wall but he runs well in the outfield. Guess its the same old thing with the mariners. Looking for the 100 rbi he delivered last year and deal with subpar defense.

Mar 26 2004, 10:49 AM
Jeff, I think you meant Ben Davis, but you're right about his offensive performance in spring training. Although stats become more meaningful when a larger number of games have been played and when the regular season starts, the contrast between Davis and Wilson is already evident. At present Davis has just two hits in 21 at-bats (.095, one of the lowest averages on the roster), while Wilson is 9 for 25 (.360).

According to the Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times, it looks like we may see the Freddy Garcia from two years ago. His control has been much better this spring and he adds a new pitch to his aresenal. I really hope the Chief doesn't stink up the place like he did last year. The M's need him because we're going to need everything we have to hold off Anaheim & Oakland.
Garcia back to old self?

LOL your right Marc my head was getting ahead of my fingers typing again. I meant Ben Davis. I am very interested to see the mariners roster. They didnt have a real good day against the diamondbacks on sunday. As for Freddy I like the freddy of a couple years ago, the cocky swagger when he fans someone. Just the arrogance that made him fun to watch. You knew that when he went out on the mound that he was working his ass off at getting the outs. Not like last year where when he went out it was like he was bored. HAVE SOME FUN DAMNIT FREDDY. I am waiting for Joel Pinero to have another great year and win even more. Mariners have tough pitching. oh yeah and the Yankees are 0-1

My sentiments EXACTLY DuckBoy!....Good luck to your M's this year -- they're my preseason pick to win the A.L. West and with hotties like Willie Bloomquist and Gil Meche (drool!

I'm assuming Ducky ain't so giddy anymore. The M's just lost against Tim Hudson in a game that barely took two hours.
Their record is now 0-5. Have they ever had a worst start of the season?

Probably not since they got good. Maybe in their early years when they first joined the league.

Seattle's worst start was in 1991 when they lost their first six games, so if they lose again to Oakland tomorrow they will tie that record. Let's hope they turn things around soon! I believe Jamie Moyer will be getting his second start of the season on Sunday.
Only an occasional Mariners' game is televised here (none of them so far) with my current cable TV service. I had been thinking of upgrading my cable package in order to get more of their games, but now I'm not so sure...

No, I'm still giddy. Pissed, but still giddy. The M's avoid their worst start ever by getting their first win of the season. Hopefully this win kick starts them into playing better baseball.

Thanks for the info, CnSEA. Maybe I'll fly down instead of driving just to save myself that $5 parking fee!

Would love to make it for another game at Safeco this year, but I don't think it's going to work out. According to the Mariners' schedule, the Royals aren't there until late August, and I'll likely be in eastern Canada at that time. Will be taking a short road trip to Vancouver fairly soon, but it doesn't look I'll have enough time to get down to Seattle.
Glad to see the M's finally come back and win one on Sunday, with five runs in the extra inning against Oakland. I see they have to play Anaheim again already. Well at least Seattle no longer has the worst record in the majors as of today...the honour now belongs to the Phillies at 1-6 (who'd have thought that, eh?)
