I am a devout Roman Catholic myself, but I do share the concerns of those who are unhappy with Tim Tebow putting Scriptural citations on his eyeblack. I don't think the issue is one of free speech or freedom of religious expression: not very many people would be in favor of censorship or gag orders or things like that. But it's a question of whether the time and the place are right. Most people watch football or go to games to relax and just enjoy a good time... they don't go to be reminded of serious things like religion or politics that so often cause controversy. Tebow has good intentions, certainly, but his action is really a distraction from the game.
...
I understand Tebow's desire to share his faith, but he has plenty of opportunities to do that outside of gametime. I just think that football games should be about football, and other subjects should be left aside, even if they are not as divisive as politics or religion, because they are still distractions. So I think that writing messages on eyeblack and similar practices should be banned, for the greater good of the game.
I agree with your thoughts above, especially leaving certain things out of football games, but I don't think we should go so far as to "ban" these things. The NCAA already has a rule book thicker than the bible and certainly does not need to add more to it.
When I'm enjoying a football game, I simply ignore or tune out things I don't like (taunting, crazy celebrations, overt messages, annoying announcers, etc.) and admire the things I do like about the game (the action, Jake Locker, fine young men, Longhorns white football pants).
