Full Version: Bruce Froemming is a bigot

There is an article today announcing that Bruce Froemming was suspended for 10 days, for calling a baseball offical a "stupid jew bitch".

This guy has umpired for 33 years, and for the past few years has been less than a stellar official, yet still gets all the big assignments. Given now his publicized bigotry, I think it's time for him to retire. How could a guy like Shawn Green step up to the plate and feel he's getting a fair treatment with a bigoted jerk like Froemming behind home plate.

I hope he gets all the punishment that the law allows.

If I remember correctly, former MLB umpire Dave Pallone, in his book 'Behind the Mask', named Bruce Froemming as being especially nasty and homophobic, so this most recent incident confirms the man's bigotry.

I'm sure many of us are curious as to what Ump25 thinks of this matter, but I would certainly understand if he is unable to comment.

ESPN reports that he's been given a 10-day suspension and will be pulled from umpiring the Oakland-Seattle season opener in Japan.

QUOTE
Froemming told Bloomberg News on Friday that he received a 10-day suspension without pay for a remark about umpiring administrator Cathy Davis.

Froemming had been scheduled to work the season opener between the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo on March 25 but will be replaced by Steve Rippley, Ralph Nelson, baseball's vice president in charge of umpires, told Bloomberg.

\"I've apologized to Cathy Davis. I was disciplined and I'd like to move on,\" Froemming said in an interview with Bloomberg. \"This is not me. I made a stupid remark and I'm sorry.\"

Most definitely!

I think the punishment is probably warranted. If I was to say something like this at work, I would expect punishment as well.

What amazed me is what they say led to the comment: he made his own travel arrangements for the Japan trip after being told by MLB not to, as they were making all the arrangements.

Meanwhile, this was in an AP article on Yahoo:

While the Froemming matter was perhaps finished, another issue that could involve umpire discipline was beginning.

Baseball is investigating whether umpire John Hirschbeck made personal threats against a top major league official during a conversation last month.

The alleged threats were made during a discussion between Hirschbeck and Rob Manfred, management's top labor lawyer, according to a major league source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Hirschbeck was upset that an acquaintance was one of 26 baseball employees laid off on Jan. 22, the source said.

Manfred declined comment Friday. A call to Hirschbeck was not immediately returned.

f**kin' umpires. Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out.

Except Randy Wolf's brother, of course. He's cute, so he can stay.

What a pleasant bunch of people they seem, eh? rolleyes.gif

As umpires, we are public figures, and persons who must remain above reproach. Because we live our lives in a fish bowl, so to speak, we must be careful with what we do and with what we say.

Bruce made careless and stupid comments. Now he must suffer the consequences. I need say nothing more about him.

We are, but we wouldn't expect someone who sounds like he has a dislike of sports officials to understand this.

That's not my quote.

An unintentional oversight on my part, Joe. My apologies. I have edited the original post to reflect the correction.

What happened to his 10 game suspension?
That bigoted bastard was behind the plate last nite in the Angles/Rangers game?
What's up with that? I thought he had no appeal process?
I hope he serves soon...that bigoted bastard needs to pay for his insensitive remarks.

It said a 10-day suspension, not 10 games. So perhaps the time was missed during spring training and he went 10 days without pay during that time.
