I agree, and I wonder if the officials or coaches asked Ian and Michael to stand next to one another so the media could drag every single remaining ounce of life out of this earth-shaking rivalry.

You know what's funny though? I've seen photos of Ian and Michael talking to each other, or standing near each other at the podium stands, and they always have a friendly, almost flirty look going between the two. I mean, they're only two years apart, so they could be a couple! I definitely believe there's a mutual respect between the two, but sometimes the way they look at each other (and sometimes hug in congratulations) makes me think something more is going on. wink

Not that i'm complaining, but what's up with the low position of these guys' suits? Is there some hydrodynamic reasoning behind revealing your (lack of) pubes? Or is it strictly aesthetic?

NBC repeats it's primtime telecast at 2:00am. The Today Show will surely show the evening's highlights including Piersol's race and the controversy surrounding it.
I always thought that Phelps' low-rider swimsuit is a carry-over from the current hip-hop/slacker look. You see it in most sports including basketball, volleyball, and everyday gym-wear. Most guys who wear their pants low do the same with athletic shorts because they feel "geeky" having the waistband up around their waist. Gotta love that Michael's not ashamed to show just a hint of his ass. Is it just me or do NBC's camera's seem to cut away to a different shot whenever he turns around and threatens to show God-fearing Americans his butt-cleavage?

Thanks for the info. It's actually sexier to me when they pull the shorts way up, so that it bunches their crotches and accentuates, umm, things.
And yes, Markus Rogran is the Popov successor. He's definitely the cutest I've seen. But Brendan Hansen's body is perfect. They'll have to duel it out.

You can compare how
hairy Markus Rogan is [despite the bright lighting--even more hairy in person], and his completely smooth/cut look during the
Olympics. I noticed that for a number of guys that were hairy or clipped in Long Beach were completely smooth in Athens.
This did not apply to the waterpolo players, who don't depend on small differences in speed through the water to be successful. So it seems either they went "natural" or just did whatever they wanted for appearance sake, not to gain a competitive advantage. Waterpolo players also tend to be larger than most swimmers, as it's really a full-contact sport disguised as swimming.

It's called "sagging" when guys wear shorts or jeans very low on the hips...I'm not sure what it's called when you wear painted-on swim suits like that.
peter
Aug 20 2004, 07:20 AM
Wearing the suits low probably has nothing to do with "sagging". These guys wear the smallest tightest suits they can to give them the most aerodynamic fit. Back when Tom Dolan was winning in the 2000 Olympics he was wearing a traditional speedo that barely covered half of his butt crack.

I don't follow water polo that closely, but when did the suits get smaller? They used to be fuller and a bit "boxier." And of course very tight with unyielding nylon. Due to the all the tugging and grabbing under the surface, I wonder why they wear skimpier suits these days. (Not complaining, mind you...the Spanish team looks uber-hot in their tri-color Speedos) Just seems to me the skimpier ones would be easier to grab onto and tear away than the fuller, tighter ones.

Funny you should mention the butt cleavage. At the watercooler today, a colleague complained she can't let her kids watch the Olympics because NBC shows too many swimmers' buttcracks.

Yep, NBC sure is a lot quicker to shift away from the butt shots, especially on underwater turns, than they are to shift over to anything that might even remotely hint of titillation - or even close same-sex congratulations, as I've noticed in some cases. "Who edits this stuff?" Prudery taken a bit too far, I'm afraid. Shame on you, GE/NBC execs!

I know that the media has hyped up Phelps as the being the greatest thing for the Americans at these Olympics, but I for one think that he is cute, even though I am 10 years older than him. And just think in 4 yrs, he will only be 23 yrs old at the Beijing Olympics(if the US goes), and with the weight training and the like, he will be even better, stronger, and even cuter. I also think that Lenny Krazleburg, Aaron Piersol, Brendan Hansen, and Lezak are the other American hotties at these Olympics! I have really been impressed with our swimmers, and the most impressive thing that Phelps did all week was allowing a teammate(who hadnt had a great Olympics, so far) to swim in the Final of the last swimming event of these Olympics and replace him on the team. He is not the average 19 year old, that is for sure!!

This was only a few hours before Michael was arrested for drunk driving, running a stop sign, and violating a restricted license. I guess underage intoxication will also be a charge.
