Interesting thesis thersis (sorry, couldn't resist), and European art certainly has a long history of beautiful nude portraits of both sexes. Whereas here Eakins was considered somewhat scandalous for his famous paintings of nudes.
Still there has always been a sexual, even homoerotic aspect to painting the male nude even in ancient Europe. Michelangelo's motivation was almost certainly tied up with his homosexuality.
The ancient (and -significantly - pre-christian) Greeks probably had a more plutonic love of the male physique due to the fact that homosexuality was not considered abnormal (though many consider it pederasty (quite different from our modern concept of homosexuality, I think homosexuality as we know it was probably also widely practiced and mostly accepted.)
Back to the French, my favorite of the players I pictured in my initial post is
Clement Poitrenaud who rings my gaydar big time. Doesn't seem to ever be pictured with a serious female interest unlike his best friend Frederic Michalak (in the same picture in that first post) who is something of a Casanova.
Also on
this apparent gay russian site there are pictures from the Dieux du Stade video with rugby players posing comfortably before the camera in ways that I don't think we will ever see NFL'ers. (scroll to the bottom and click on the photos)
