Well, my Making of the 2006 Dieux du Stade Calendar DVD arrived over Christmas weekend, and I have to say it was a waste of money. Despite the calendar itself being perhaps the most sultry and suggestive yet, the video is shot in a way that seems to be afraid to display the rugby players' bodies. It's all jump cuts that mimic snapshot photography, long shots where you can't even recognize who's in frame, and "artfully placed" obstructing objects that not only block the players' goods but also large sections of their entire bodies. There is absolutely no sense of playful camaraderie like there was in the previous two DVDs—they might as well have used mannequins as subjects rather than living people.
As a separate issue, there are a lot fewer of the manly real athlete physiques on display and a lot more waxed, long-haired Calvin Klein model types staring past the camera with blank aloof expressions. Which I suppose may please a certain segment of the audience, but I prefer guys who look like they actually play rugby for a living rather than sell cologne and designer underwear.

But ever since this year's calendar (well, based on the caps that I saw online), I've wondered if the guys in the pictures are ruggers or just models. Is Stade any good? I'm not familiar with French rugby clubs. Or are they more of a pretty-boy rugby club? It looks like it's the latter to me (though I could be wrong)
I don't get 'cause I've posted some shots of Stade during a training session, and they don't look anything like they do on the calendar/DVD caps. They look all rugged and hot - like ruggers, not models.

I know at least one bar called Fado on 15th and Locust here in Philly shows a lot of Rugby games, as well as AFL (Aussie Rules Footy) though I've only been a couple of times.
