That's Welsh centre Tom Shanklin who from the look of him plays a similar position to the center in American football. Though I don't think they "hike" the ball, they probably take the brunt of the attack by the opposition's heaviest guys.

And he looks like a serious bruiser. Hopefully Canada's tiny James Pritchard got to the ball and made his escape before Shanklin got to him.

For the record I think Jeff's not a bad looking guy, and Shanklin is probably a big ole cuddly bald bear too, and would make a nice bedwarmer for the right guy.

The centers in Rugby are backs, actually. The big guys in the scrum are the props. I guess the Welsh players are just generally a bit larger.

How can you describe these as "gratuitous rugby photos"? To me, they're essential!

Just knocking the folks who think virtually any photo or talk of hot jocks is gratuitous. To me the photos are no more literally gratuitous than free speech is in the political process, or abstracts in art.

Just a matter of taste and opinion. So take them as you will. To me they may not be "essential" but there surely is nothing wrong with them.

And they are a lot more fun than just arguing about who should or should not have won.

Which reminds me, can't wait for the photos from the Argentina win over France. They were my lustful pics to go to the finals.

My only regret is that there is now no possibility of that commemorative nude calendar. Those macho Argentines probably wouldn't have cooperated anyhow. And the French are likely in need of a break from frivolity. (Don't they know that that calendar is essential? )

Now back to my gratuitous and frivolous tributes to the freedom to see art where I find it:
