Full Version: Where in the world is Mo Vaughn?

according to today's paper (the Mets are in town to play the Giants)

"star first baseman Mo Vaughn has a knee injury so severe, even [Art] Howe acknowledges Vaughn's career is in jeopardy. What's more, the Mets have lost contact with Vaughn and do not know where he is."

Surely a guy that large would be easy to spot? Any Mets fans with more info?

Mo is found

He just wasn't at his usual buffet-table post...

Reading the description of his injury, it's pretty clear his career is over.

Yet another great move by Steve Phillips.
rolleyes.gif How come everyone who ISN'T GM of the Mets knew this was going to be a disaster?

Bu. Buwa. Buwahahahahahahaha!

Oh Lord, we thank thee for having the Angels get rid of the Fat Tub of Goo Clubhouse Toxin Mo Vaughn. Verily, I say, it is one of the major reasons they are the WS champs (til October at least).

There actually IS justice in this world. Schaudenfreude, meet Jim Allen. He's a big fan.

I like Vaughn and really feel bad for him, and I loathe the Mets, but I feel bad for them too. Vaughn's career is over, and he MUST lose weight if he wants to keep walking. Just another nail in the coffin--or it should be--in Steve Phillips' career. How does the man keep his job anyway?

Schadenfreude. (I had to weigh in since you were going after the soon-to-be knee-less Big 'Mo.)

In fairness (and I had grave misgivings about the Mo signing too), the big fella had a decent SECOND half last year -- check the numbers. Looks like it was a final flourish.

More "fan" behavior gone too far, from ESPN.com:

QUOTE
A Brooklyn man was charged Tuesday with stalking New York Mets general manager Steve Phillips after a series of alleged tirades at Shea Stadium.

A judge ordered Matthew Barnes, 27, held without bail until the defendant can undergo a psychiatric exam.

Prosecutors said that since early January, Barnes repeatedly showed up outside offices at Shea, where he yelled, cursed and demanded to see Phillips. When asked to leave, he refused until removed by security, prosecutors added.

Barnes, who is unemployed, had no direct contact with Phillips \"but acted in a way that caused (the general manager) to be fearful and concerned for his safety,\" Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.

\"That's what those people do,\" said Phillips, who referred all other questions to the district attorney.

If convicted of stalking, harassment and trespassing charges, Barnes could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

It was the second time this year Barnes was arrested for outbursts at Shea. A call to his lawyer was not immediately returned.

I think Steve Phillips is a good looking guy...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Mets fans, but Mo Vaughn has announced his retirement. Finally the Mets have rid themselves of this albatross, one of the most misguided free agent signings in Mets history.

Injured New York Mets first baseman Mo Vaughn, speaking at a baseball banquet, said Friday night that his major league career is over.

\"I'm through, man,\" Vaughn said, according to a Boston Globe report. \"My career is over. I have an injury no doctor can fix, but I have no regrets.\"
No Mo' for Vaughn

Mom wasn't signed. He was traded for 8 million dollar pitcher Kevin Appier as I recall. I thought it was a reasonable gamble at the time because I'd often read that he really wanted to play in New York and hoped he might rebound to have some great seasons there. Playing in pain through those knee problems, as he did with a number of other injuries, cut his career short. He was a heck of a hitter and really cared about the game and people in general (yes, and the buffet table, too).

Kind of ironic he made this announcement at a banquet.

Vaughn's knees wouldn't have cut his career short if he weren't 100 pounds overweight. He may be a very nice guy and all, but he's a pro athlete getting paid millions of dollars and all he has to do is try and stay in shape.

Glad to see he's retired. Maybe this will help speed up the rebuiliding process in Queens.

from the Mets' website: "We understand Mo has a very serious knee injury and we continue to be in constant communication with him," team spokesman Jay Horwitz said. "We remain in touch but he has not retired."

I'm not sure, but it sounds like he's still getting paid (from insurance) the balance of his contract. If he officially "retires," he walks away from a few million dollars. Can anybody confirm this?

It's true Vaughn hasn't retired. he's only publicly admitted that he doesn't believe he can play baseball anymore. If he does retire, he won't get the insurance money. Expect him to officially retire sometime in 2005, when his contract expires and he makes all of his money.
