The 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics will take place in Berlin on nine consecutive days of events starting Saturday, August 15, until August 23, 2009.
Some 1,800 athletes from the whole world are taking part in the nine day Championships, competing in 47 competitions across 24 different disciplines.
The venue of the championships is Berlin Olympic Stadium, built originally for the 1936 Olympic Games.
Although the Stadium has gone through lots of changes throughout its colourful and not always glorious history, there are still lots of things visible there reminding of the origins of the Stadium as the forum for the German National Socialist Party to display their superiority. The original architecture and art reflect the ideology of their creators, not least the monumental statues specially designed to illustrate the military aspects of sport, such as combat, discipline, courage, self-sacrifice and heroism.
