Interesting. I always wondered: If there are no scoring throws or holds, does a wrestler who seems to be more aggressive score points for that alone when the other wrestler is more passive?

I guess I want to know if defense is valued much.

I don't think you can get points for being aggressive, but you can get points for being passive. Once you take your man down, you need to continue to keep and gain additional control, otherwise you might get a stalling penalty. And the man being taken control of needs to work to get out of the position, otherwise he could get called for stalling as well. I think I recall two stalling calls equal one point for the other man, and if you get alot of them (don't know what alot means) Ref can award the match to the other man.

So the short answer to my question would be "Yes." if the aggressive wrestler can get points due to the defending wrestlers passivity?

PatSanFran is correct.. you don't score points for aggression alone. Wrestlers need to maintain action throughout the match, making an honest attempt to stay near the center of the mat and wrestle aggressively whether on top, bottom or in the neutral position and regardless of the time or score of the match. Grasping or interlocking hands repeatedly around a leg can be considered stalling. The wrestler on top (advantage position) must wrestle aggressively, always working for a pin or he could be called for stalling. In collegiate wrestling, the first stalling call is just a warning. The second and third warnings are one point each. The fourth warning is two points. And being warned a fifth time for stalling is disqualification from the match.

Yep.. on matters of judgment, the ref's decisions are final, although the ref can change a call immediately if he feels he made that call in error.
