TomFord:
MJ, being sheltered and all, assumes \"hip-hop\" guy means black guy. It doesn't. There's nothing hypocritical about Karamo hooking up with a Puerto Rican guy (who happens to have hip hop style).
That said, Karamo has said he prefers black guys, and that he doesn't ever expect to be with a white guy, and that's he's not a big fan of interracial relationships. He's also said that he gets that from what his dad tells him, and it's something that he's questioning.
Well, given that a sizable number of/many Puerto Ricans, no matter how light or dark, have *some* African ancestry (cf. Tito Puente, J-Lo, Lauren Velez, Felix Trinidad, Carlos Delgado, Franky G., etc.), he could finesse this one, but I attribute a lot of his nonsense just to being young. (If you don't believe me on the PR tip, just crack a history book on the island.) All these RW Philly folks are messes, but the Real World has
always sought the messes out.
Especially black male messes. Where would this show be without the steady train of crazy black men? The catalogue is long and notorious. (My friend) Kevin Powell; John; David; Cyrus; that sad disaster in Seattle (what was his name, later picked up for prostitution in LA?); etc. I think Alton was about the sanest of all of them, which ain't saying much. (Alton, Kevin, Karamo, David, and the cutie with the huge afro in NYC2 were at least great to look at.) The black women have been somewhat better, though again, they like messes--Tammy; Sharon in London; the two nutcases (Coral and the other woman) in NYC2; the confused girl in Boston; etc.
I'd add that for many black people (not all, but I am going to generalize here from experience), especially ones from the deep South, because of our experiences in this society, feelings of racial solidarity and protectiveness can tend to come out in environments that feel hostile, so I saw a weird sort of racial and paternalistic vibe going on between Karamo and Shavonda. It was as if Karamo didn't want Landon messing her over, when the truth is that she's a grown woman (childish and mixed up yes, as is Landon) who made certain choices, and it wasn't Karamo's responsibility to act like her big brother/play daddy, etc. At one point he was acting like he was her "man," and I though, uh, Karamo, don't forget, you are a homosexual, not her babydaddy....
ON TOP OF WHICH, Karamo's father is from Jamaica, and the young'un grew up in the U.S. South. What a combo! That he actually came out, ON TELEVISION, a miracle of some proportions. I think he'll grow out of a lot of his drama. He's no Farrakhan, or Will Mega. He does seem to have a brain, and he was very active this past fall in the presidential campaign, acting like he had good sense, so there's hope. But really, everyone on this cast needs some psychological help. It ain't just Karamo.
