You missed quite a bit, Bobby, because it was a 90 minute premiere. The teams were divided into two groups and the opening task was to design and create a Times Square billboard for Hilfiger in 2 days. Tommy H. told them he wanted the billboard to reflect a "made in New York" theme.
Group one designed a very cheesy NYC skyline, complete with a Statue of Liberty that looked like it was designed by a third-grader. The buildings in the skyline were painted with angular, multicolor lines. The signature line on it said Tom
MYNY. It was a clever play on the Tommy Hilfiger branding and it ended up reading "To My New York." Interesting. The design itself wasn't good though.
Group two designed an abstract piece of artwork that looked incredible prior to going up on the billboard. When they put it up, it was too small... they centered it on the huge billboard but all the white space made it lose some of its power. They added a "made in NY" logo and included a Hilfiger signature that was kind of cool, but way too small for a billboard. In concept it was great, but as Tommy pointed out, the object of a billboard is having people see it from far away.
So in the end, even though the first group had a bad drawing, it won because of its clever take on the Tom
MYNY name. A woman from the second group was eliminated... the team lead had to nominate the two he thought worked the least.
The people on the show are a pretty interesting group.
The competing billboards.
