So gang, now that we're nearing the end of the year what was your song of 2004? It can be your favorite song of the year, or from some other year that just touched you this year.
simontexas
"Take Your Mama" by Scissor Sisters.
I just saw'em live this past week and they put on a great show. I love Jake! eek!

"Letters from Home" by John Michael Montgomery

2004 has been a pretty crappy year for music...here are a few off the top of my head:

Second movement of Smile
Kevin Lyttle - Turn Me On
Eric Prydz - Call On Me (more for the videos, though)
Iron & Wine - Naked As We Came
Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monologue
Fiery Furnaces - Straight Street
ITJock
Hmmmm - Past year Single: Because of its late Nov/Dec 2003 release date I would say

'Love's Devine'
Seal

Past year Album: tie

'Live Like You Were Dying'
Tim McGraw

'Live at Blenheim Palace'
Jamie Cullum

Ballard Boy
"Take Your Mama" by Scissor Sisters is a great song. I saw them live in Seattle last Sept. and just bought tickets to see them when they return in January. Incidentally, they're on SNL tonight.
simontexas
Damn, I missed SS last night on SNL. I was at the Magnetic Fields show. Let's add their song "I Thought You Were My Boyfriend" to the list. wink

"Live from Blenheim Palace" was released only on DVD. But, as you will see, I agree on your Jamie Cullum suggestion.

My picks:
CD: Jamie Cullum, TWENTYSOMETHING (no one else deserves an honorable mention this year)
Song: Jamie Cullum "All at Sea" (honorable mention to U2 "Vertigo")
Best Concert I Attended: Travis all the way back in February (honorable mention to Mr. Cullum in Novemeber)
DVD Concert: Jamie Cullum "Live at Blenheim Palace"

Evenessence's "My Immortal."

I don't think any of you care why I say it is, but I'm going to tell anyway.

I fell in love with someone and it was playing in the background and even though we're not together, I cannot help but remember how I felt at that time. It hurts more than it should since he is still my best friend and I love him than I could ever express in words.

Strictly on a personal note...

Amazing by George Michael is my song for 2004.

And for once, I relate it to MYSELF vs. some guy. I found my saviour within for a change. wink

Wow. For the first time ever, I can't answer this question. I can't think of one new song in 2004 that will be memorable for me. Pretty sad.

Does Texas Fight count?
batboy
"Sunday Morning" by Maroon 5

and

"If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys
FeverDog
\"Devil's Broom\" by Joseph Arthur sums up my year.
Lksimcoe
"Live like you were dying".

I wish I could. GOD I wish I could. The song really kicked me in the stomach the first time I heard it.

I'm sure there are more, but I really don't pay attention to the names of them unless they really really get to me

batboy....good taste in music. i wonder if we have similar taste in men too. ;-)

"Somebody Told Me" by the Killers. I remember the first time I heard it, driving back from my mother's place on Labor Day Weekend, and it was one of those "Wow, play that again!" moments. Saw them live a couple weeks later. Wore the CD out. Great stuff... "Somebody told me/that you had a boyfriend/who looked like a girlfriend/that I had in February of last year..."
aquaman
What? No one mentioned "Milkshake" by Kelis??? biggrin.gif

Actually, I agree with NJ about "Amazing" and Batboy about Alicia Keyes' "If I Ain't Got You".

Favorite of 2004: Rilo Kiley "Portions for foxes" a great girl led band. Here it on their website:
http://www.rilokiley.com/

I like the Killer's "somebody told me." That whole album is fantastic. I like maroon 5's "This love".

Hmmm, my current infactuations are James Denton, the plumber from "Desperate Housewives" and Drew Brees for, of course, his butt. Is that close? wink
LoveJavy
Batboy -- I share your taste in men. Those two are my current faves. Denton's whole ... aaargh... mmm... and Drew's finest asset, of course.

Oh, and more to the point of this thread ... Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose," the single and the CD, are incredible. Rich and evocative and lovely.

I question some of you folks taste in music. Where do you find this stuff?
Erik G
I like Evanessence for the most part. It is serendipitous when music becomes a fitting soundtrack to your life. For this mind music is a love unto itself. I found myself relating to a Linkin Park song eek! So I cannot be to critical of others sonic ownership other than to
hope they can find something inspirational here.
If I was forced to choose and live with the decision, I would pick something from the Jarboe-Neurosis release.

"My Immortal" by Evanescence

After spending nearly 2 years chasing my friend who finally turned me down this year, knowing full well the reason why I was chasing him, I know the pain being sung about here. "I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone and though you're still with me, I've been alone all along." Pretty powerful!

That and "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand (the latest Scottish band with a very un-Scottish name). "I know I won't be leaving here / with you."
simontexas
I nearly forgot about "Michael" by Franz Ferdinand. eek! It's fantastic.
Lyrics: Michael, you're the boy with all the leather hips, sticky hair, sticky hips, stubble on my sticky lips. Michael you're the only one I'd ever want. Beautiful boys on a beautiful dancefloor, Michael you're dancing like a beautiful dance whore. Michael waiting on a silver platter now...and nothing matters now.
John King
I agree with you about Alicia Keys "If I ain't got you".

Runner-Up: "This Love" by. Maroon Five
It was one of the best summer songs. Sitting out in front of a bar drinking beer, and somebody riding by playing it on the radio. Ah, what a good summer.

‘Tuesday Morning’
Melissa Etheridge
Album/CD: Lucky
Dedicated to Mark Bingham

10:03 on a Tuesday Morning
In the fall of an American Dream
A man is doing what he knows is right
On Flight 93

He loved his mom and he loved his dad
He loved his home and he loved his man
But on that bloody Tuesday morning
He died an American

Now you cannot change this
You can’t erase this
You can’t pretend this is not a truth

Even though he could not marry
Or teach your children in our schools
Because who he wants to love
Is breaking your God’s rules
He stood up on Tuesday Morning
In the terror he was brave
And he made his choice
And without a doubt
A hundred lives he must have saved

Now you cannot change this
You can’t erase this
You can’t pretend this is not the truth

And the things you might take for granted
Your inalienable rights
Some might choose to deny him
Even though he gave his life
Can you live with yourself in the land of the free
And make him less of a hero than the other three
Well it might begin to change ya
In a field in Pennsylvania

Now you cannot change this
You can’t erase this
You can’t pretend this is not the truth

Stand up America
Hear the bell now as it tolls
Wake up America
It’s Tuesday Morning

The Trouble with Love by Kelly Clarkson

The only song that can aptly describe my 2004 is "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. It is a depressing song that fits my sometimes depressing life extremely well.

I walk a lonely road
The only one I that have ever known
Don't know were it goes
But its home and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I'll walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone

Read between the lines of what's
F-ed up and every things all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I'll walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a..

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I'll walk away!

Interesting music tastes on the board ... I feel kind of childish for my selections.

I have 2 songs for 2004 since the first half of the year has been much different than the second half of the year. For the first part of the year, Predictable by Delta Goodrem. (Technically, this was released Down Under last year, but I'm sure that it was released in another country this year.) For the second half of the year, it is 'Extraordinary' by Liz Phair.

It's not my song of the year, but for sheer exhilaration and optimism, I thought I'd throw Debby Holiday's "Dive" out there. After the first part of my Christmas adventure it just seemed fitting.

As for the song of 2004, I'm still debating between 7 songs.

"Toxic" by Britney Spears

yeah. seriously. I know.

"You're My Everything"
"How Does It Feel" both by Anita Baker
Mariner Duck Guy
I thought about this for awhile and one song kept popping into my head. The Tony Moran remix of Deborah Cox's "Easy As Life". I absolutely love this song. It'the song from Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida, but beautifully remixed by Tony. It is truly an Anthem, balls to the walls song. Full of synthms, beats, and passion. And I love the lyrics:

QUOTE
Nothing in life is ever easy, Nothing in love will ever run true. My heart will never stop believing I still believe in what love can do.
BBall6'9
Can you have one from different genres?

Country
When I Think About Cheating by Gretchen Wilson.

Pop
Car Wash from the Shark Tale Soundtrack

Rap
Headsprung by LL Cool J

R&B
On The Couch by Prince

Breesboy...so, when do I get my copy?

I like your Top 10 list...although where is Kristine W or Narcotic Thrust on the list?

I should share with you my Top 10 list.

OK I admit that I am usually behind on music, but this is a list of the albums and songs I discovered and listened to the most in 2004 in no particular order:

Albums-

Seal "IV"
Queen Latifa "Dana Owens Album"
Fischerspooner "#1"
Black Eyed Peas "Elephunk"
Sarah McLachlan "Remixed"
Sheryl Crow "The Very Best of"
Evanescence "Fallen"
Patty Griffin "Impossible Dream"
John Denver "Difinitive All-time Greatest Hits"
Indigo Girls "All That We Let In"
Melissa Ehteridge "Lucky"

Songs-

"Party for Two" Shania Twain/Mark McGrath
"Save My Soul" Kristine W
"Burned with Desire" DJ Armin Van Buuren
"You Promised Me" In-Grid

As you can see I have a very broad range of taste, and I always tend to listen to full albums rather than individual "favorite" songs.

I need to get the Dana Owens Album--but I've heard mixed reviews, so I've been hesitant...
