I just bought an ELO anthology. Love it. Mr. Blue Sky rules.

I'm totally in to the Goa Trance thing right now:

Astral Projection: Dancing Galaxy
Oforia: Delerious
Man With No Name: Earth Moving the Sun
Hallucinogen: Twisted

Sequencers blazing at a 150 BPM with psychedelic sound effects layered over that? Bliss, sheer bliss.

Oh, the Stones' Sticky Fingers and Tull's Thick as a Brick as well.

The Beginning Stages of...The Polyphonic Spree by The Polyphonic Spree. It's quite possibly the most joyous record I've heard all year. If you're a fan of The Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk Hotel, Grandaddy, or early Mercury Rev - check it out.

Linkin Park- Meteora

I just bought Simply Red's new cd "Home". I really like thier latest song "Sunrise" which samples heavily from Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)". The remix recently was #1 on the dance charts. They also remake Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street", and, of all songs, The Stylistics' "You Make Me Feel Brand New". My favorites tracks are "Sunrise", "Home", "Fake" and the cover of Dennis Brown's "Money In My Pocket". I do feel short changed because you only get 10 songs (the 11th is a reprise of Home" on the cd. Simply Red is one of the groups that I like and will purchase any of their cd's. This one, though, is not one of their best and with only 10 songs, I don't think it was worth the $13.99 that I paid.

Speaking of Simply Red & Hall & Oates. Has anyone purchased Pat Benatar's "Go"? I heard a couple of songs on the cd really kick ass and is vintage Benatar/Neil Geraldo. I abosolutely LOVE Pat Benatar. Maybe I'll buy it...unless I can find a used one somewhere.

We know Gaga4Gaby will post a review of The Bangles "Doll Revolution" when it is released...right G4G??

What about other 80's acts. Anyone buy the latest Hall & Oates cd "Do It For Love" or Styx's release earlier this year?

And how about Blondie's new cd "Curse of Blondie"? This one intrigues me. I heard that the US is not releasing this cd so you have to get it as an import. And the industry wonders why people are downloading music???

Any other 80's acts releasing new stuff?

I have CNN Radio on my computer right now, but
the three I have been listening to during the past week:
Linkin Park - METEROA
Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians - SHOOTING RUBBERBANDS AT THE STARS
Lifehouse - NO NAME FACE
Yep, no happy music here. smile.gif
Jim Allen
Happy music sucks.

Radiohead: Hail to the Thief

Phish: All the studio albums and a bunch of live things---plllleeeeaaaassssseeeee tour this winter!

Bob Marley and Peter Tosh: I find reggae boring beyond belief, for the most part, but I borrowed a coupla CD's from a friend and there's some great songs buried amongst the sound-alikes: Trenchtown Rock: "One good thing about music/When it hits/You feel no pain", Get Up, Stand Up, Legalize It etc. I'll never get dreadlocks or praise Jah but at least there's a few things I like, which is different from last week.

Lots of piano music, courtesy of Philip's Great Pianists of the Century series that I've been checking out from the library. The Martha Agerich (mostly Chopin) and John Ogden (a stunning Rachmaninov 2nd sonata) are especially fine.

Annie Lennox's album Bare is so awesome, some very sad and beautiful songs. I also just got a new release by Mary Fahl, don't remember the name but the music is beautiful, kind of a cross between Carly Simon and Alison Krauss.

Steely Dan - Aja - some things I will always love.
Lksimcoe
Queen. The 3 CD boxed set. Playing on tne PC here at work, and is cranked.

At the present time, the song Fat Bottomed Girls is playing.

Freddie Mercury was a-f**king-mazing
Aaron95
The following CD's are currently in heavy rotation in my car CD changer:

Christina Argulera - Stripped. This has been in heavy rotation for almost a year now.

Beyonce - Dangerously in Love - I know, I know, she's the current R&B/Pop Princess, but this girl can back it up. She has a great voice, she's drop dead gorgeous, and is on her way to super- stardom.

Deborah Cox - Remixes - I highly recommend this CD. Deborah Cox is one of the most UNDERRATED female vocalists in entertainment. This CD has some amazing mixes by Hector Hex, Junior Vasquez, etc.

There's a new REMASTERED Deluxe Edition version of Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" that'll blow your nuts off! In addition to all the classic tracks on that album ("Hott Stuff" anyone?) there is a bonus disc with all of the disco remixes of:

I Feel Love
Last Dance
Mac Arthur Park Suite
Hot Stuff
Bad Girls
Walk Away
Dim All the Lights
Nor More Tears (Enough is Enough) (Duet with Barbara Streisand)
On The Radio (Long Version)

Complete disco heaven and the sound quality is amazing! Buy it NOW! biggrin.gif

Two words, billsf - "Sunset people." wink

And for those more inclined to Blues-rock, the new Neil Young album "Greendale' is really nice. Even though the "rock opera" premise to it is really weak. I actually thought his last album "Are You Passionate?" was a much better album. But, I tend to like just about anything Neil Young has put out lately. wink

In a similar vein but with a bit of a twist...there's a remastered deluxe edition of the 1980 classic "diana" by Diana Ross (featuring "Upside Down and "I'm Coming Out")--the first disc includes the album itself, plus the ORIGINAL versions which were produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. Whether it was at the request of Motown or Miss Ross Herself, those versions were shelved and another engineer came in and made changes to the album before it was released. It's really interesting to hear the different versions of each song.

The second disc includes various uptempo tracks, including unreleased songs and mixes of other songs that weren't available on CD before.

OK based on billsf & JIP's enthusiatic review, I must purchase La Summer's remastered "Bad Girls" cd. Besides, it's been awhile since I had my nuts blown off wink I still listen to the remix version of her 2002? song "Love Is The Healer". That song should have been a huge hit. Toot Toot, heh, Beep Beep.

Who's the Boss, Who's the boss, DIANA ROSS! After I buy "Bad Girls" I'll check out Miss Ross' cd. I always loved the album cover for "Diana".

And I still need to purchase Ethel Merman's classic Disco CD!

No I haven't. I've read that "On the Beach" is probably one of the very worst things he's done, but I'm sure I'm wrong. I must be one of the few people in the world that actually likes "Trans". I just think "Trans" was sooooo way ahead of its time. It sounds like contemporary "house" music to me in some spots! And the vocorder version of "Transformer Man" is just hypnotic!

I'll see if Amazon.com has some sound bites of "On the Beach", which will probably just turn into a "Add to my shopping cart" click.

If you want the inside scoop on Miss Ross and her unholy glory, you've got to read "Motown: Music, Money, Sex, and Power" by Gerald Posner. It gives all the ups and downs of Motown in no uncertain terms, including all sorts of soundbites on production teams like you're asking. A lot is devoted to the supreme bitch Miss Ross, but there's great stuff on the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, the Four Tops, Michael Jackson, the whole glitterati that was Motown, but especially Berry Gordy himself (what a prick). sad.gif

Great book, really entertaining reading you won't be able to put down if your memory goes back that far (like mine does).

I'm one of the few that thinks On the Beach is among his best, then. I didn't realize it was so critically derided!
WChip
My latest is Seal's latest, Seal IV- love his voice, but the songs mostly aren't so hot- there's one, I think it's called Can You See My Vision, that I like (the jacket's in the car). I'd like to see him do a cover album (haven't thought of who although I've often thought that I'd love to hear a more varied and melodic voice for some of Tracy Chapman's great songs). Hopefully he'd do it without all the echo chamber crap that he seems to like.

I was thinking of another album, sorry. "On the Beach" is actually a very admired album with some of the same edge as "Tonight's the Night". Of course, after listening to samples on amazon.com I bought it, just like I knew I would. rolleyes.gif

I would certainly rank "Beach" and "Night" among Neil's best, but that is a list about 10 albums long. Also can't forget the earlier stuff like "Goldrush" and "Nowhere",as well as later classics like "Rust".I really got turned off by "Trans"-just not my thing at all,and I'm not sure I've bought anything since then.I did just acquire a bootleg of a couple of the CSN&Y shows from the weeklong set at the Filmore East that were edited to become "4 Way Street".The sound is excellent, and some of the versions of cuts that were or weren't included on the original are extraordinary.I'm pretty sure that this week of shows marked the live debut of both "Southern Man" and "Ohio"-you can tell the crowd is listening to songs they've never heard before.

George I'm continually amazed at how similar our music tastes are.I haven't heard the whole "Wind" album yet,but what I've heard I really like. How can an album with contributions from Henley, Jackson and Bruce (among others) not be awesome? wink I'd probably be playing "The Rising" more if I didn't have 50 or 60 boots from the tour to listen to-just love listening to live recordings and being transported to the magic of that evening's show. Can't wait to get a copy of the Aug 31 show that I saw at GS.Right now the only GS show I have is the July 15 opener-and I play it constantly. smile.gif

I have started purchasing remastered albums that I loved in the 80's. I recently bought the remastered versions of Tears For Fears Songs From the Big Chair and The Seeds of Love , Spandau Ballet True , Pet Shop Boys Please , Sting The Dream of the Blue Turtles , and Billy Joel The Nylon Curtain. They either come with bonus tracks, remixes, updated liner notes, and/or videos. ...and the remastering really changes some of the ways I heard some of the songs in the beginning. The only question was what do with the non-remastered versions of these cd's that I had bought in late 80's/early 90's. Hello EBAY!
billsf
Are there any Dashboard Confessional fans out there. I picked up their new one and am really impressed!

By the way, what does it mean when a band is referred to as an "emo" band? I see this in reviews a lot lately and just don't know the lingo.
OntarioJosh
Hey Billsf I love dashboard confessional too. I actually like the older stuff better than the new cd, but it's all really good. As for the emo thing...in one magazine I read it ws explained as "what happens when punk grows up." It's probably not the best explanation, but at least it's something
WChip
Is the DVD with that worth taking a look at? I've barely listened to the CD, (need to get it in my car player) but liked it.
billsf
I honestly haven't had time to watch the DVD that came with the Dashboard Confessional CD. Probably get around to it this week sometime, and I'll let you know what I think about it.
Joe in Philly
Apparently "emo" is shorthand for "emotion"--if I understand it, the songs get really deep and emotional even if the music is really loud.
Mariner Duck Guy
Well, ever since I mentioned Pat Benatar a few posts back, I am now official stuck on 80's music. I pulled all my 80's music and I'm in the process of making some compilation cd's for my car. I'm up to 5 cd's. Note to self: Must Purchase IPOD. Pat Benatar, Go Go's, ABC, Eurythmics, Sheena Easton, The Bangles, Adam with & without the Ants, OMD, PSB, Madge, Falco, Level 42, Simple Minds, Irene Cara, Men Without Hats, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Dexy's, Dead or Alive, Toto and on and on and on...

Hmmm...

Heavy rotation:

Fallen - Evanescence (great and so oddly addictive)
The Golden Hum - Remy Zero (faboo album!!!!!)
Bare - Annie Lennox
musicforthemorningafter - Pete Yorn
The Sensual World - Kate Bush

And just bought two 80's things:

Hunting High and Low - a-ha
The Crossing - Big Country

damn Kemp Mill for slashing rpices and going out of business.... it's all their fault...

The last 16 days since the concert I have had Adam Gregory's "Workin' on It" CD in. It is awesome, especially for an 18 year old.

 I thought I was alone here about my love for Simply Red. Combining all of the cd's of theirs that I have (including full length albums, cd singles, greatest hits compilations, and remixes), I would possess 24 Simply Red cd's. I was so hungry for any new material by them that I took an instant liking to the Home album. My personal favorite is "Home Loan Blues"--a song with which most of us could identify.

I'm listening to the new OutKast album(s), Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Completely brilliant stuff, they seem most likely to replace Lucinda Williams' World Without Tears as my best of the year.

If you like Prince - and I mean the truly genius, wildly creative, sexy, funny, oddball, juvenile, pretentious, quicksilver maverick Prince that seems to have evaporated circa 1989 - you gotta get this.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head.

I love the whole CD. It's completely my kind of music.

Swimmer, does that Coldplay album have their song "Clocks" on it? I love that song, sounds alot like Matchbox 20. Thanks for the recommendation.

I finally took my Warren Zevon CD's out of the rotation (now that the offical mourning period has passed). I'm back to Luna, Jack Johnson and Dispatch.
