Neil Young-Harvest Moon
James Taylor-Dad Loves His Work
Karla Bonoff-Wild Heart of the Young
Ronstadt, Parton, Harris-Trio
Jackson Browne-Solo Acoustic Volume 1
I really like when you post here George, because I own a lot of the same albums. wink Most of the rest of the time I'm completely lost and have no idea if it's a singer,a group or something else.

Btw,late last year in my former career as an airline reservationist, Karla Bonoff actually called me.I thought about asking her about working so close with Jackson and Warren, but settled for expressing my admiration for her early work on songs like "Home" and "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me".I always thought she had an amazing voice.

Not exactly a timely reply, but I just saw this post and was struck by the intriguing covers.
Willie,Tanya Tucker(not sure she did the original)and Bruce from "Nebraska"-JC certainly was adept at choosing fairly obscure songs to cover.

Don't know if you saw it or not,but about 10 yrs or so ago there was a Johnny Cash tribute concert (PBS)and Bruce did an awesome version of
"Give My Love to Rose".I also remember the old Johhny Cash variety tv show from close to 40 yrs back.I thought that one episode was particularly memorable,it was when Neil Young was in Nashville to record "Harvest" and JC invited him on his show to sing "Needle And The Damage Done".
Not exactly your typical Grand Ole Opry fare. smile.gif

And there's nothing wrong with that at all! I have the weirdest (many would say horrible) taste in music, but I beat to my own drum anyway so if I feel the music, I listen to it.

I change my playlist on my "radio station" Duckhouseagogo so if you want a sneak peak into my mind, scroll up and take a listen. And no, I make no $$ by having people listen to my station.

Currently listening to some 60's/70's pop stuff:

Amongst the songs:

Starbuck: "Moonlight Feel Right"
Paperlace: "The Night Chicago Died"
ELO: "Last Train To London"
Chicago: "Make Me Smile", "Old Days",
Ram Jam: "Black Betty"
Jigsaw: "Sky High"
The Seekers: "Georgie Girl"
The Association: "Windy"
Pilot: "Magic"
Frankie Vali & The Four Seasons: "Who Loves You" and "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)
Linda Ronstadt: "Hurt So Bad" and "How DO I Make You"
Kiss: "Christine Sixteen" and "Detroit Rock City"

And one of the local sport stations has changed the lyrics of Detroit Rock City to Detroit "'Hawk" City!

Funny you should mention "Billy Don't Be A Hero"... got it! I heard she threw the letter away.

"Season In The Sun" Got it! We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun, but the stars we could reach were just starfishs on the beach!!!

And while I'm at it, you may as well throw in "Run Joey Run" by David Geddes, "Beautiful Sunday" by Daniel Boone and "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" by Middle of The Road. Got it, got it, got it!

Now if you excuse me, I have to go & get "Hooked On A Feeling" OOGAH chaka HOOGA HOOGA OOGAH chaka I can't stop this feeling....

Oh, Jim and JIP:

QUOTE
My daddy was a cop on the east side of Chicago
Back in the USA back in the bad old days
In the heat of a summer night
In the land of the dollar bill
When the town of Chicago died
And they talk about it still
When a man named Al Capone
Tried to make that town his own
And he called his gang to war
With the forces of the law

I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed
You got the tune stuck in your head now, right?

Maybe I'll find a mash-up of this with another 70's song and send it to you

Seeing that Rosabel has come out with a new song, I took the time to revisit Rosabel past with "That Sound (Ralphi's Vox)"

another song that has grown on me exponentially is Freemasons "Watchin"

I'm cuurently converting some old 70's songs from vinyl into mp3's. This is from K-Tel's 1975 Music Express LP.

Frankie Valli: Searin' To God
Ozark Mountain Daredevils: Jackie Blue
Austin Roberts: Rocky
Jigsaw: Sky High
Phoebe Snow: Poetry Man
Harry Chapin: Cats In The Cradle
The Ritchie Family: Brazil
10cc: I'm Not In Love
Sammy Johns: Chevy Van
Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes: Get Dancin'

As for DVD's I just got Kylie Minogue's "Showgirl" DVD. Fabulous. There's a hot scene with the male Dancers "taking a shower" on stage. She sings almost all of her hits. The show starts off with "Better The Devil You Know". It was probably the gayest tour last year.

Now, back to the 70's....

I want to convert some vinyl to mp3. There are some records (and in particular, 12-inch remixes from the 80s) that I would love to burn to CD and put on my iPod. I've read up on it a little. I would love something that makes it really, really easy.

But right now I have another project to work on: one of my brothers got my mom a tiny little mp3 player (512 MB). She has a list of 40 or so songs, all oldies, that she wants loaded onto it. Guess who inherited that job? wink The worst part is, I already own only one or two songs on her list, so I need to...acquire...the rest.

Wow, I mentioned I was doing this exact same thing earlier in the thread! Nice to know someone else still has a soft spot for K-Tel albums.

As someone from Paper Lace pointed out, "There's an east side of everything. Go as far east as you can. There - you're on the east side." (Yes, he was kidding.)

You, you've blown it all sky high, by telling me a lie...

Music Express was my favorite K-Tel album, especiall "sky High". All the scratches & pop's. Love it.

JIP, I don't think there is a way to record a LP into MP3 without doing it in real time. Some of the albums/songs/12" are very difficult to find as MP3's. I actually enjoyed pulling out my old vinyl albums and 12" and 7" singles and looking at the cover art. It brought back so much memories. Most of my records are still at my mom's in Hawaii so the stuff I have up here are mainly from the 80's.

Besides the songs I listed earlier, Music Express also contained such gems as "Black Superman", "Dy-No-Mite", "Get Down Tonight", "Philadelphia Freedom", "Mandy", "Love Will Keep us Together", and "Theme from The Rockford Files".

And it also contained one of the most corniest/tragic songs from the 70's, "Run Joey Run"

"Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me. Daddy please don't, we're gonna get mar...ried" Then she dies. And Joey Runs.

Love it, love it, LOVE IT.

For those who like this sort of thing, here's a great resource for looking up old favorite K-Tel albums. I used the artwork from the site to make the covers for my CDs. Starflight was my first and favorite, but I really like Rock 80. That's right - the Ramones on K-Tel. Will wonders never cease?

This most likely isn't the easiest way, but in order to get vinyl onto CD, I do a three-step process.

1. Record the vinyl onto MiniDisc.
2. Record the MiniDisc into my comptuer using a shareware program.
3. Burn the CD using the files I made using the shareware.

Time consuming, but it gives me the opportunity to fix things like speed control (my turntable plays a bit fast) and pop elimination (easy enough to do in the shareware program). Also, K-Tel albums were pressed very thinly (in order to fit all those wonderful hits on just one record!) so it gives me the opportunity to boost the levels where necessary.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Fleetwood Mac Rumours is one of my favorite albums of all time- Perfect to cheer me up when I am feeling down.

I remember owning at least one of those K-Tel albums from the 70s, 20 Explosive Hits, which contained gems like 'Candida' (Tony Orlando), 'Spill the Wine' (Eric Burdon), 'American Woman' (Guess Who) and one-hit wonders like 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes' (Edison Lighthouse).

But right now I'm listening to something a little more obscure and exotic: Mestre Barrão's Axé Capoeira. It's got some great rhythms using drums and the 'berimbau', and all the lyrics are in Portuguese, a language I've been learning. Current track is "Saudade Que Faz Chorar" which loosely translated (I think) means "sadness makes me cry". For those who may not be familiar with it, capoeira is a fascinating and cunning form of martial arts (set to music) which was developed by slaves in Brazil.

I just downloaded the new Prince single, "Black sweat," from iTunes. And my jaw is currently grazing the floor. 'Scuse me while I pop my eyes back into their sockets.

To call this a massive and startling return to form is beyond understatement. It totally recalls his glory days but without resorting to mere imitation. It's funky and crazy, and exists in it's own atmosphere. The best part (for me, anyway) is that he's going back to experimenting with really f**ked up sounds again. Even the best of his work from the past, oh, twenty-odd years has sounded encased in lucite. Very glossy, very crystalline, very...musicianly. In a word - professional. But this is more playful and spontaneous. And just bonkers.

Can't wait for the album!

While in Vancouver, I picked up Robbie Williams Greatest Hits. I love it. That song "Supreme" is cool. You listen to it and you say "hey, it's I Will Survive...but not". And some songs you are merrily listening to and he drops an F bomb.
He has some awsome songs.

Others:

"Analogue" - A-Ha. Much better single than "Celice". IMHO.

"Shape of Things To Come" - This is the retro song from the Target commercials. Max Frost & the Troopers

"Secret" & "The Zookeeper's Boy" - Mew. Interesting act from I think, Denmark. Their cd is called "And the Glass Handed Kites". I guess they can be compared to Sigur Ros or The Mars Volta.

"No Big Deal" - Laura Fabian

"Everything I'm Not" and "4Ever" - The Veronicas!
The former sounds eerily similar to Kelly's "Since You've Been Gone" & "Behind These Hazel Eyes"

"Silent Shout" - The Knife. Cool intrumental track. Georgio Moroder-ish

"Advertising Space" - Robbie Williams. I like this better than his previous single.

"Looking 4 Love" - September. Fun Dance Song and a nice follow up to "Sattelites".

and finally,

The Pet Shop Boys remix of Madonna's "Sorry".
